Halo 4: Review Thread

So you're probably not one that plays on Normal anyways, so why would that one guy's duration matter?
And doesn't Spartan Ops appeal to you? It is a second full length campaign.

Typically start on normal and go up from there if i want more of a challenge.

I'm definitely gonna get the game, but i am a cheapskate on a much smaller budget than last month... so i'll wait til after christmas.

So the Games Radar video is set to private now. Maybe they realized how fucking bad it was and pulled it? Or they realized that the embargo isn't actually up...

Doubt it, I'm sure they just didn't want to get in trouble for getting out ahead of the embargo date. Besides, I doubt they could re-cut a review video and get it out in time, and I'm sure that's their top priority right now.

If you have XBL Gold I would imagine you would more than get your money's worth out of Spartan Ops, even assuming you are playing completely by yourself.

I know it's early but where do you think it stands campaign wise against the other Halos?
Halo is typically a combination of a lot of things coming together to make a whole.

Story Coherency
Story Scope
Characters
Music
Enemy Variety
Enemy Encounter Design
Gameplay Scenario Variety
Graphics
Environment and Level Design

I'll say this, in a majority of those categories, Halo 4 is the best Halo. It also does a great job at establishing a new tone and direction for this new trilogy. We can only expect more improvements in many things that have been established in this game.

Legendary is the only way to play Halo.
It's pretty cheap in every game after CE. Sadly. Bungie wanted to make it harder but they went overboard with things like Jackal Snipers.

Biggest thing I want from 4 is a return to form for the Multi though. Halo 2 has been the unchallenged Halo MP king for too long. Not super excited about some things I've heard, but it has potential. Just keep shitty forge maps out of matchmaking.

Halo games must be played on heroic, really, normal is not too challenge.

Just looked at my last 2 campaigns first runs

Did halo 3 in 6 hours on legendary

Reach in 7 hours-ish on heroic

They didn't seem too short

Your first runthrough on Halo 3 was on Legendary and you did it in 6 hours? Jesus Christ. I mainly get stuck on Cortana on Legendary, but 6 hours for the whole thing on your first go on Legendary is nuts. Reach seems about right, mine shows 4 1/2 hours on Heroic but that was about 75% done in co-op.

The best comparison would be to Halo Reach. I'm not saying it's going to take YOU 9 hours on heroic. But the length most closely resembles Halo Reach. So expect it to take however long Reach took you.

And all this co-op talk...if you're really playing a Halo game for the first time in co-op then I don't think you care that much about campaign. If anything, Halo 4's campaign is probably better suited for co-op than most Halos. (Halo 3 has the best co-op structure)

Halo 3 and ODST both have great Legendary modes. I would probably give the edge to ODST, because it has no Cortana. Reach was great too, with the exception of that Pillar of Autumn section near the end of the game. Not the overstated turret section, which is a drag but more of a memorization thing than a difficulty spike, but the part where you are like facing a wall of Covenant with a ton of Elites. It's one of the most difficult firefights in the series.

H2's Legendary was bad.

CE is probably the easiest, but I don't think that makes the others unfair. CE's campaign is blessed with overpowered pistols on both sides... that plasma pistol will take you places, man.

It was 2 player co-op

(It's how I did halo 1 and 2)

Reach was solo (but my stats are a mess, 7 hours is guesswork)

Okay, that seems much more reasonable lol. Getting to my Reach stats were a pain, since at least on bnet (waypoint just about never loads for me) for Reach campaign history you have to scroll through individual pages, and I had a shitload for Campaign from Challenges and whanot. For Halo 3 they let you go straight to the first/last page.

The Games Radar review really should be thrown out the window. Not because of the great score, but because of how fucking idiotic it is.

Omission of Iron Sights makes the gameplay feel dated? DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.
Cheesy one liners with little to no substance throughout, just awful review. The "journalist" couldn't even follow simple embargo protocols.

It's 2012 and Halo (HALO) just got Its-not-Call-Of-Duty`ed.

If anyone is interested in having an intelligent discussion about the IGN review of Halo 4 -- provided it doesn't devolve into baseless/knee-jerk IGN bashing -- I'll be around this thread tonight while I man the IGN comments section. I won't defend my score (that's the review's job!) but I'm happy to answer any questions about the game that may not have been covered in the review.

Hope you guys enjoy reading all the coverage from around the web tonight!

im predicting high 9's and 10's, but hope the cut features (campaign/spartan ops theater, custom game options) arent completely ignored

I thought it was because they jumped the gun. Isn't the embargo lifted in an hour?

Halo 2's legendary was the hardest. I couldn't get past the first level with the covenant boarding parties for years. Other than a few spots halo3, ODST, and reach weren't that bad.

You didn't even get to the hard part

Jackal snipers

Damn them to hell

I thought the legendary difficulty was great in Halo Reach. I only died a number of times on two levels. Then again, I was pretty much a DMR/pistol whore the whole campaign. I just took my time and hid around corners/bushes.

Halo 2.....That was something else.

Honestly, if you're really worried about the length of the campaign, you probably should not be spending $60 on a Halo game.

What I mean by this is that the campaigns are great fun obviously, but the majority of "content" in the game comes from multiplayer, co-op modes, and replaying the campaign.

If you see "6 hour campaign" and immediately think of that as "this game is only 6 hours long", then Halo may not be the franchise for you.

"6 hour campaign" + spartan ops.

What cut custom game options are you talking about...

Not sure if this what he was referring to, but a lot of people are upset you can't go back to a "classic" CTF set up, where you can drop the flag, it's not on auto pickup, etc. My understanding is those are options you can't change.

IIRC, 1-flag is also gone. Two flag only.

343 redefined the game types for Halo 4, and the custom options don't let players revert to what they used to be. I'm okay with that, myself. It's a different game.

Even "6 hours campaign" do not mean 6 hours and it is over. Halo campaigns are always very replayables.

Are the skulls in Halo 4?

One flag is interesting, however I agree with you here. In Halo 4 not dropping the flag isn't setting, its a feature that they want to carry through into custom games and such. I'm pretty excited to see how it plays out.

OP needs to start adding all these reviews to the 1st post.

What are "all these reviews" you speak of? The Games Radar review that no longer exists or the one from a site no one has ever heard of, is scant on details, and has no score.
