The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

Yeah, see this wasn't what I was saying. It's true that I don't play flight sims. But I never said they were boring. Heck I think some of the games they Quick Looked were awesome. And I have a huge respect to everyone who plays those games, because they require a level of discipline and patience, that is not common.

Now re: Aerofly FS, I still believe it's boring. It doesn't have the level of details other flight sims have, and it looked like there was nothing worth doing in the game. Now you can disagree with me, but I will not apologize or back off for having an opinion about a flight sim game.
Honestly, I think it's childish to disrespect people who don't share your opinion about a genre. I think YOU should have some respect and tolerance for gamers with different tastes than yours.

See, I almost wanted to apologize until I read your last part. You can make some trash comment and then hide behind childish, rubbish comments as "Oh you're disrespecting my opinion" Yes, brilliant move. And again, the fact that you haven't played it shows in your comments - Aerofly is one of the best looking flight simulators available, using baked textures but it still looks better than a big slap of mud and 3 pixel buildings.

Look how undetailed this looks;

Maybe you should stop judging games without having ANY interest in them, any experience or any knowledge and base your odd claims from watching an our long session of someone else playing a game.

I respect when people find a game boring, bad or whatever - When they actually play the genre, when they have some experience with it. I wouldn't look at Xenoblade or some other highly acclaimed game and say "God that looks boring!" because the genre isn't for me, I'd just respect its merits and make up my opinion by actually playing it, not looking at videos.

I think with todays engines there could be some awesome Flight Sims.

Flight Simulator 2013 with Frostbite and moving traffic and pedestrians.

Except, almost every kind of 'normal' engine is rubbish for flight simulators due to draw distances, hardware load when drawing vast spaces etc. you always need a tailored engine.

This isn't going anywhere, Sethos. We disagree on a fundamental issue here, which means further discussing this matter is futile.
As for posting pics to show the fidelity of the game, yeah, I can play that game too:
*queue pic of plane landing on water surface*
*pic of static, lifeless co pilot model*
*pic of plane going through trees like they don't exist*
*pic of useless panel control buttons*

Again, I'll never apologize for saying an opinion for a flight sim. Just like I won't judge you if you say whatever you feel about a JRPG or any genre that you only know from watching people play them. I wouldn't call you a child if you say Xenoblade looks boring to you after watching a QL of it. Because I know and appreciate the fact that different people like different things.

Oh, then please show me one flight simulator that has an amazing visual fidelity everywhere. No one is claiming every aspect is flawless, because no flight game will have that due to their scope. Every. single. flight simulator available today will look like shit somewhere, usually on the ground or when scrutinizing it but most won't look as good as Aerofly when you are ... actually flying. See, this is something you'd know by actually playing the games. Aerofly is touted within the flight community as one of the best looking flight games available.

By that measure we also have to respect when someone calls another person fat because hey, that's their opinion. No, it's called thinking and commenting, I would never in a million years look at a video of a game from a genre I don't even play and go "OMG BORING ASS GAME!" because it is simply childish and makes it even worse when you you don't care, don't play and don't know a single thing about the genre. Just because you type something down doesn't mean you can just hide behind "respect my opinion!", that only works when you have actually have something tangible to present.

When someone plays the game or actually has some knowledge on the genre / games, then it's a totally different ballpark and they are actually able to back up what they say. THEN you can talk about respecting opinions.

They nailed the sounds perfectly.

Flights sims boring ?! Not enough explosions and skill-trees in my flight sim?

I'm drink.

Helicopter moment in Ravaged is an instant classic.

Also, we're at the point where an indie MP game like Ravaged looks better than any console game I've seen.

Hey man, Ace Combat is pretty good. There's definitely place for both.

I think Aerofly does some pretty interesting things as far as accessibility is concerned. Unrealistic? Yes. But it's definitely friendlier than most other games in the genre. That it doesn't pass some of the "common" checks is a bit of a bummer (water behaviour, trees, ground textures when viewed up close).

Holy crap, that ravaged quick look was hilarious. Vinny was killing me the whole time, but when Brad and Vinny witnessed greatness, I couldn't breathe.

I added Lucius to my wishlist. Looks like a fun little game, even if it's really linear.

Painkiller looks much more like painkiller than I would have guessed. That was a fun game. I need to replay it some time.

I'd personally recommend NSMB and Spelunky.

Also the gameshow QLs with Brad Muir guesting.

At least the first couple levels (haven't played further) are virtually a remake of the original, only the cutscenes are different.

Kirby's Epic Yarn gets forgotten, probably cause of the Alex hate, but that was a fantastic Quick Look. Ryan and Alex's reactions to the adorableness is brilliant and pretty hilarious.

Also Wipeout with Vinny and Brad.

There's honestly a lot of good entertainment to be had. I'm thinking of so many hilarious scenes right now. Good job, Giantbomb.

Quick Look: Aerofly FS (Drew/Dave/Vinny) (1:02:58)

"They wouldn't let me in the plane...they knew better."

Vinny on fucking fire this week.

I'd personally recommend NSMB and Spelunky.

Also the gameshow QLs with Brad Muir guesting.

Jeff: "You know, you could get that for FREE if you just kill that shopkeeper."

Broken Brad: "NOOOOOOO" *gets trap comboed in 30 seconds anyways*

The best was 27m 40s into this one.

Probably beating on a dead horse here, but why do people hate Alex? He's bar none my absolute favorite reviewer on the site =\

The Crash Time quick look is amazing. It's only 13 minutes long and every single part of it is hilarious. Never a dull moment.

What are the best quicklooks to watch? Any that tops Sleepy dogs DLC?

Celebrity Poker, hands down.

Can't speak to everyone's reasons but personally I get tired of his condescending schtick when posting news on the site, and his on-air persona is kind of obnoxious and forced with a sense of humour that doesn't really mesh well with the rest of the group's (hence a lot of awkward silences during Bombcast guest spots). His reviews aren't bad, though.

I've played it, it's a decent game with good flying mechanics and a very accurate flight model - You know, what people who care about flying games tend to look for. Does it lack content? Very much so but it's not "boring" by any means if you are actually into the genre.

I'm sorry, but as someone who was a big Microsoft Flight Simulator fan, this game (I was in flight groups flying packages with a real co-op pilot transporting goods) is bare-bones and quite "boring". It's just so plain, has none of what a flight simmer is looking for, the graphics might be nice, but it doesn't make up for the unintuitive cockpit design (meaning you can't use any of the instruments within' the cockpit). The location is limited to Switzerland, and you can land on water... Based on the video, some of the moves done by the Cessna were not possible and would definitely lead to mechanical failure (which the games doesn't seem to have) or your airplane is falling apart. Don't even get me started on the "challenges".

I'm a person who was into these type of games, and I still love watching videos about it, but the fact is this game is anything but good or even decent.

He was my favorite reviewer from the Gamespot days. I still trust him and his reviews even though I might not be interested in the games he reviews nowadays. His Big Rigs and Robocop videos are highlights.

I think a lot of the angst is that sometimes he likes to jump into the conversation and be somewhat loud when he does.

It's something I noticed at least. I like him though and I'm happy he's part of the team.

Some of the moves done in every flight simulator are impossible, Microsoft Flight Simulator is no different.

Aerofly Review;

This is, to me, what makes or breaks a flight simulator. I’m happy to say that the Aerofly FS flight model performs well. The only one of the 8 planes included that I have flown in real life is the Cessna 172. I can’t really compare the rest. I have never flown a Hornet and I certainly never would fly an aircraft without an engine! The virtual Cessna performs much like I remember it did back in flight school.

You can stall, loop, roll, spin, sideslip, etc. The flight modeling feels real. Of course, no flight simulator for the home PC market models flight with 100% accuracy. Not even full size motion simulators, used for real life pilot training, models flight accurately. It’s just good enough within certain parameters.

Even the engine is quite advanced in its physics - Simmer from another forum

Besides the beautiful graphics engine, aerofly FS is special in its physics engine.
it not only calculates aero forces on components seperately (today most flight sims already do that), but also, some components have individual mass, velocity, etc..
the gliders have the most obvious interactions between main wings and fuselage when AOA is too high and the aircraft oscillates.

in a way, this is the most advanced physics simulation among flight sims.
i don't know if the aerodynamic data are close to reality, but the foundation of the physics engine is at a higher level than most other sims(PC games). given the correct raw data, the system can simulate flight performance well in most situation.

I will agree with you that the scope is limited, unfortunately but saying this isn't what flight simmers are looking for isn't right. It's a solid little game that I know several of my simmer friends bought and enjoyed and I did as well. However the game isn't perfect, the cockpits can be quite iffy, ground textures aren't impressive, some dodgy stuff going on etc. but having played any flight simulator some of that is pretty much a de facto standard.

So you finding this game bad is very subjective as a lot of people won't agree with you, like myself but that's of course your opinion. However I respect your opinion infinitely more having actual experience.

I wish I could just make the physics bigger

Kirby's Epic Yarn gets forgotten, probably cause of the Alex hate, but that was a fantastic Quick Look. Ryan and Alex's reactions to the adorableness is brilliant and pretty hilarious.

I only started watching QLs about a year ago so I missed this. I was just thinking about watching it! I shall do so, after flight club.

He doesn't really mesh well with the GB guys in discussions. They're all great friends, but his jokes are hardly ever funny and he laughs at his own jokes a lot. Also he tends to talk over and interrupt, and the fact that his voice is a bit jarring doesn't help. As I said, the guys are very good friends so he's obviously not an unlikable guy, but in a video/podcast format he doesn't work. Maybe he tries too hard or something, I don't know to be honest.

I really like him too. I think a lot of people have grown to love the core 4 and don't like anything that messes with it. It's the same reason people are down on Patrick but he has the advantage of being in the same office and producing the same content so people can get used to him more quickly.
