Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Something I had never heard of until now: based on a recent Miyamoto interview, it seems Link was inspired by... Peter Pan.

http://www.gamekult.com/actu/miyamoto-evoque-les-origines-de-link-A105530.html

The website is French, but basically it says that they started with the elf idea, and that at the time "elf" was synonym of "Peter Pan"; since Miyamoto loves Disney, he thought green would suit their new hero quite well.
I'm sure someone with more time than me will make a better translation, sorry guys. :)

I thought that was obvious, especially with Ocarina of Time...I mean, the Kokiri in that ARE basically Peter Pan.

In fact, when I dressed up as Link (twice, the N64 one back in elementary, and the SS sword one last year) everyone thought I was Peter Pan.

The fact that he has a fairy following him around in OoT is also a good indication.

Probably obvious, yeah, didn't really ever thought about it though. ^^
The full interview is now up on the same site. At the very end of it, Miyamoto is speaking about where the name Link comes from: at first the triforce was meant to be electronic chips, with some parts of the game happening in the past and others in the future, the hero making the "link" between those two.
Now this is something I had never heard of, but once again I'm not really a Zelda fan. :)

I just found out that is not Ebisumaru's hair connected to his moustache

It's a bandana. It's always been a bandana.

Saw it posted randomly somewhere and confirmed it on the japanese wikipedia.

My life has been a lie.
Fun fact: that is not a mustache. It is part of the bandana.

I've always assumed he was inspired by Robin Hood, but that was mostly before I actually played any Zelda.

I literally just discovered this.

Press L and R on the 3DS while playing a Game Boy game and you can change the color of the screen from the GB Pocket White and Black to the OG Game Boy Green-ish and Black.

It should be Purple/yellow or Blue/Orange if it follows the color wheel

Both the controller and the disc have Blue/Yellow

edit :

The posted color wheel makes it seens that the yellow is blue complimentary color ...

It is orange, trust me

That is yellow....
Yellow-Orange at most

They just used the primary colors.

Primary colors of pigment: red, blue, yellow
Primary colors of light: red, blue, green

In Pokemon, Azurill are 25% male and 75% female. It evolves into Marill, which is 50% male and 50% female. So if you catch a female Azurill and evolve it into a Marill, there's a chance it could become male.

That's not how the percentages work.

I went to check and ... well it was just explained in a bizarre way

Bulbapedia said:
Azurill is currently the only Pokémon which does not evolve based on gender whose gender ratio does not match that of its evolved forms, being female 75% of the time while Marill and Azumarill are female only 50% of the time. Due to this, one of every three female Azurill evolve into a male Marill (whether or not this will happen is determined by the hidden personality value). It is unknown if this is an error in programming or if it was intentional to reference real-world animals that change sex under specific conditions.

Guys, a new one just dawned on me.

I'm sure I'm the last one to this party on this but, think back to Earthworm Jim . The original one, not the sequel.

In the first stage- the junkyard you have to shoot a refrigerator which knocks it onto a log that launches a cow skyward. The game even gives you a prompt "Cow launched!".

For some reason it only just today dawned on me after 18 years that the cow that crushes princess whats-her-name at the game conclusion was the same cow launched in the first stage.

Didn't know about that, neat feature.

In the 3DS music player, there's a visualizer based on a Game and Watch game. I just learned that you can play the game with the circle pad. It will keep your high score.

You can control the spaceship visualizer the same way, but I don't think there's a game for it or anything.

You can shoot with L and R in the spaceship vsualizer.

Oh, nice. Played it just now. It truly is a functional game.

And finally, in some Kirby game (I think it's Kirby's Pinball Land) there's a section of three screens where parts of the level arrange to look like a naked woman. I saw some screenshots of this once before but haven't managed to come across it recently. If I can get a hold of a screencap, I'll put it in here, it's pretty interesting.

I finally stumbled upon a screencap of this. It was in Dreamland 2. I posted it in another thread just now and I realized I first heard about it in here so figured I would close the loop on this one. Not that anyone else was still wondering about it other than me...

Never realized this but if you use a GameShark to bypass the name selection entry in Pokemon Red and Blue the game automatically assigns the names "NINTEN" to the main player and "SONY" to the rival. Thought that was pretty cool.

this happens in FF7, too, with Aeris becoming Aerith if you don't name her yourself.

... Wait, I didn't know that. What the fuck is wrong with me?
Like a lot of the things in this thread... We were exposed to some fairly obvious references, but we were children when we first saw them, so we filed them away in the back of our minds and didn't reevaluate their meanings ever again.

I don't know if this is just me going crazy, but I distinctly remember in Super Mario World Advance, after you beat the secret world and unlocked the alternate enemies and everything, the message in Yoshi's house was signed not by Yoshi, but by "Super Dragon Yoshi". And I showed it to my friend and for the life of us we could not figure out how to unlock this "Super Dragon Yoshi" thing. GameFAQs is no help.

According to this you just have to beat the game as it is a missed translation spot.

I always wondered what the enemy counter in Super Mario Land 2 was good for. Now I finally know - defeating 100 enemies gives you a star. I honestly never made the connection before.

in the back alley house at Rogueport, (TTYD), there's a crime scene with blood and a toad-shaped chalk censored in the US version. This is disturbing
