The 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year is one of the quickest American four-doors ever built. It drives like a sports car, eager and agile and instantly responsive. But it's also as smoothly effortless as a Rolls-Royce, can carry almost as much stuff as a Chevy Equinox, and is more efficient than a Toyota Prius. Oh, and it'll sashay up to the valet at a luxury hotel like a supermodel working a Paris catwalk. By any measure, the Tesla Model S is a truly remarkable automobile, perhaps the most accomplished all-new luxury car since the original Lexus LS 400. That's why it's our 2013 Car of the Year.

Congrats to Tesla. Well deserved win!

Not a good year for conservatives!

There has been some recent news about curved LCD panels. I laughed at it as a stupid idea -- I mean who needs curved LCDs? But now I get it. DAT SLAB!

Also, the only drivers who were fucked after Sandy were Leaf drivers. At least the Volt drivers could still get gas if they needed.

Well it was pretty hard to get gas after Sandy, but yeah people with electric cars were fucked.

It was hard but possible and dependent on where you were. I'm at exit 8 and gas supply south of here was fine (but totally fucked just north of here); we were like the dividing line in the gas supply map. We never had gas rationing, but Middlesex county just to the north did.

It made me realize how dangerous it is to have an electric only vehicle; you are basically fucked in an emergency. No matter how rare that occurrence may be, after Sandy, I'd definitely factor it into the purchase of a vehicle.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I want this car so badly. My Ford Fusion is paid for and is in like new condition (work from home barely ever drive) I could likely get 12k for it. That leaves me about 28k short. Damn.

How much? I'll take two.

40K. Can I have the 2nd one?

b-bu-b-but...Solyndra!!!!

First American car company in years and the S proves that they can build something more than just a proof of concept and Republicans still shit on them. Sad.

Also, Toyota put the model S drivetrain in a Rav 4 and autoblog went nuts for it which shows you how badass that drivetrain is.

Wow, I had expected some huge figure but 40K is a pretty down to earth price. Still out of my league though, so I'm sorry I couldn't deliver on the second one. :p

It starts at $49900 after the $7500 tax credit, according to the website. Some states also offer additional tax credits.

If they're giving awards to innovative cars that are not yet relevant to the lives of almost everyone, this should have been Google's self driving Prius.

It will when they start selling it.

Google car hooked up with Google Now, you don't even have to think about where you're going. You just walk to the Garage open the door and get in because Google knows. They know..

I love driving the Tesla car in GT5. The thing sounds like a rocket when speeding up. Good to see a RL version win an award!

I sure hope Tesla doesn't give it to those douches at BBC's Top Gear to do another test drive.

nope, they give awards to the best looking, best driving, best valued car on the market. an electric car won it.

40 grand isn't too bad for a car

Too bad this car isn't 40 grand. It's 49,900 AFTER the 7500 dollar credit just for the BASE model that has an estimated 160 mile range (at 55 mph average). All for specs that you can get in ICE cars costing far, far less even after you factor in the gas savings.

Some people put value into supporting a new American car company that produces quality electric cars.

Find me an equivalently luxurious and well performing car that's as highly recommended in this price range.

The car is actually great value; not just for an EV, but just as a vehicle. It's just not priced for the poors.
