Fun fact: Slash fiction, as in non-homosexual characters being re-imagined in gay couples, originated with Kirk and Spock.

However, you're probably wrong in that the gay community was still nonexistent in pop culture back then, so Trekkies were just considered nerds, not gay.

Yup, that's why I brought up that example :p

Oh, I don't know how it was in the US, but we Trekkies (and nerds in general) used to be considered not only borderline sociopaths, but also you know, girly. Reading and science were not macho enough activities back in the day. To see the same crap pattern repeated again with the bronies is truthly something. Imbecility and disdain for out of the norm people is common to every generation, I guess.

Heh don't you think ive not seen that! I guess there are crazies on both side of the fence. personally I never got the green eyes thing, I always thought there were much more obvious things to pick at with the franchise.

i like the Sonic Adventure design.

Sonic Generations was also fucking amazing.

Sonic Colors was also great as well.

come on sega... can we get 3 good games in a row... please sega please.

Do people like the little dragon? is he persona non grata in brony circles, didn't know he even existed until the other night.

Spikes cool, hes the sidekick character i guess.

he doesnt get a lot of attention but hes a great character.

When the brony thing started, I thought maybe the show was like a Dexter's Lab / Powerpuff Girls type of thing. Holy fuck was I wrong.

lets look at something cool a fan made instead of a terrible thing.

Always found the visceral hatred for this fanbase somewhat hypocritical. Were it a children's cartoon aimed at young males, no one would have a problem, as proven by the lack of hatred of fans of A:tLA, Young Justice, Teen Titans, and various other children's cartoons that get love on these boards.

However, because it's a girl's cartoon (created with the express purpose of being a cartoon aimed at girls, like most boy's cartoons are aimed at boys, instead of a cartoon only for girls) there's something wrong with the people who enjoy it?

I'm not a fan, and I find the swarm mentality some of these groups a occasionally demonstrate odd, but some of you folks could really do with getting over yourselves.

I don't think that's the point at all. It's not a case of boy liking to play with barbie doll's or liking pink and purple colors and the gender role stereotyping or reversal.

It's that they get offended, like seriously offended that it's a show for little kids and that they are in some sort of mass delusion that it's made specifically for the brony.

I can understand a cartoon being entertaining for both kids and adults. Animaniacs and Batman both did that even Pixar movies do that. It's the obsession is what's weird and calling themselves the true intended audience.

I thought it was a joke too at first.

I'm in the camp of WTF, if the show was something like adventure time i would understand why people of all ages would like it, but MLP couldn't be more for little girls under 10. I really shouldn't criticise but i cant help myself these guys are douchbags.

So is Ryu's from street fighter

Anyway Hate all fan bases, From Star Wars, Pokémon, digimon to the New England Patriots

And of course the Animu all of it

Just going way overboard, marks buying too much into the product

Now that's no fun, we should all get a little dirty.

The fans of this shit are either in it for the "ironic" hipster bullshit or just weird.

Man, look at all these grown men in the games section. Don't they realize Mario's for small kids? They shouldn't be wasting their time on video games anyway. Don't they have anything useful to do?

I've never seen a single episode of this pony stuff btw. Though, I remember that it was already being hyped before the first season started, since it was made by the people who made Powerpuff Girls or whatever. Not really surprising that people like something that appears to be a quality show.

Some of the reactions here are similar to those from people in my hometown whenever homosexuality is mentioned. Just like they won't catch "teh gay" you won't catch teh brony.

.
I guess i need to go to burgerking and order 100 kids meals I need those mario toys.

When you have a show that's heavily aimed towards (indirectly) promoting toys then yeah, some people are going to buy them like crazy. The show is also surprisingly well-written and funny for what it is (a girl's cartoon), so even people outside of the intended demographic has found it enjoyable. I'm a fan of the show and I guess by definition that makes me a brony, but I'm very hesitant to call myself one because of the negative image that comes with it. Not all bronies are crazy, in the same way as all anime fans aren't weeaboos and not all Christians are fundamentalist nutters. But it is of course very possible that the percentage of crazies is higher among the bronies than the other groups I mentioned.

The worst I find is that they have to flaunt that they are a brony every chance they get. They have "poni-fied" everything you like. If it exists, there is a chance it will have a pony version of it.

Just tone it down a little bit.

I just don't get the obsession. It's like a bunch of bored nerds got together and needed SOMETHING weird to latch onto, so they chose My Little Pony. I mean, there's a ton of other cartoons for kids that are much better. Adventure Time. Regular Show. Phineas and Ferb. Those shows have their older fanbases, but they are not as crazy as the bronies. I don't get what it is about MLP that made so many people lose their minds over it.

i like all those shows too.

but MLP is just really adorable.

or as the otakus would say, 'moe' and 'kawaii.'

a bunch of girls with giant eyes and magic powers, might as well be an anime.

That's just it though, it's not well written and funny. Not for adults anyway. There are a hundred shows you could be watching that are a hundred times better. Shows that are written for adults. Instead, you chose to watch a cartoon for very young children. Why? That's what makes this phenomenon so interesting. Why would adults watch this instead of the many excellent TV show out there that are made for adults?

It kind of reminds me of Japan's obsession with Touhou.

Only in this case, instead of anime girls it's ponies.

I can... not necessarily understand, but at least comprehend anime/otaku/Science Fiction/DnD/Harry Potter/etc fans.

But this My Little Pony shit is simply fucking gross. It's not for grown men, the creators of the show have come out and said it was only ever intended for young girls. The whole subculture where gaggles of creepy 20+ year old male nerds gather to do fuck knows what is out of control.

Just listen to some of the interviews that Howard Stern had at some MLP convention, it's all this weird sexual shit:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUcjKln4zhc

The whole situation is honestly nauseating. I just know society will look back on this in 10 years and wonder why these sexually perverse people weren't put on a sexual-attack warning list or something.

Abandon all hope..

Hence "for what it is", a cartoon for girls. I watch it because I think it's funny and charming, and I like the characters. And I've found some of the episodes really well-written, and other eipsodes not so much. Out of curiosity, how much of it have you seen? The first two episodes are really different from the rest, and are in my opinion pretty meh. I can't really answer for why people choose mlp over cartoons that are written for adults, but I think the light-hearted, innocent nature of it has something to do with it.

I really just can't understand it. My 4 year old daughter likes MLP so I have a hard time equating her tastes with that of 20 something guys.

Some of your fellow fans have chosen the route to butcher that notion.

My 6 year old boy loves MLP too and inevitably I've ended up watching the show with him at times.

The thing is, MLP is just like any other cartoon aimed at young children. It's meant to be funny for both the kids and the adults. If a cartoon wants to be successful, then it has to have a level of humor and enjoyment that the adults who end up watching with their kids can understand and enjoy, or they wont watch it. If the adults don't watch it then the kids are less apt to watch it and if nobody is watching then nobody is buying.

So, MLP has a level of humor above that of it's targeted age group of pre-teen kids. It's actually well-written for a cartoon and the visual gags are always top notch. Is it on the level of Phineas and Ferb or Gravity Falls? No, but it's not offensive and has identifiable and relatable characters. I honestly think the backlash to adult men liking the show is far more unnerving to the grown men liking the show.

People need to grow up and realize that sometimes people are going to like things that you don't understand.

What is up with the name Brony? Is that an attempt to push away females from getting involved? Or am I reading too much into that?

The weirdness of the phenomenon for me has way more to do with the show being for children then it being a show for girls.

Then again... I'm making a cartoon aimed at adults right now and I'd love it if 5-year-olds across the country became obsessed with it ha.

Lots of kids shows have large adult audiences though, why does MLP freak you out?

Wow, the power of the media is in full effect here. Am I the only one that sees a bunch of regressed, feminized dudes who really should know better?

Feminized?

You can probably make a point for regressed as they are sort of acting childish...but feminized?

Better explain that.
