What I don't get is why there is scorn in the first place?

Part of it is self-hating geek backlash (see also: sci-fi vs. fantasy nerds, Star Wars vs Star Trek, etc.). For whatever reason, a lot of geeks love to eat their own and are fiercely tribal.

I think another part of it is that that brony-hate is as much a meme as bronies themselves (see also: furries and "Amir0x is a fag" comments on YouTube videos).

I agree, at least some of the hate has to come from the normal internet hate machine that allows people to be hyperbolic in their hate toward something they have no actual knowledge of. It's a meme as much as 'It's a Trap' is a meme.

I always thought people who were into to this type of stuff were mentally mind fucked and I wouldn't trust them around children. They are at least 10000000x worse than the sonic fan base IMHO. This dude tried to say the show was genius and that it wasn't aimed towards children. Never spoke to that guy again.

Thanks for providing me and example of exactly what I was talking about 9thwonder.

Nothing is as bad as Sonic fans. Nothing. Bronies come close, but Sonic fans make then seem like well-adjusted members of society by comparison.

As I wrote a few pages back, at least a part of it is also how some bronies take over threads in forums with their MLP nemesis even if it's not relevant. Then another closet brony appears and then another and the next thing you know the whole thread's infested with them. There are also some who try to convert you to them even if you say you're not interested, saying you should just give it a chance or some such shit even if you've already said no. For a fandom whose motto is love and tolerance, they're awfully pushy if you say you don't want to watch their show just because you think it's for girls.

This is all anecdotal though and I am not saying it's definitely why they're hated so much. It's just why I'm annoyed by this fandom.

Is there something inherently frightening about grown men going to an MLP aisle? And "lurking"? They're standing about in a well-lit store, shopping.

Not frightening, just odd when grown men go into a young girl's toy isle shopping for themselves.

Oh yeah that definitely happens. Someone with authority needs to explain to them why they shouldn't do that. Beat'em with rationality.

As much as a greasy, unkempt and overweight man walking into a Toys 'R' Us hung over and dropping 350 Benjamins on Skylanders. :P

so you guys want a badly animated cartoon with a central theme of adolescent friendship viewed through a mature lens with humour and character interactions which are genuinely appropriate for your level of development?

Holy fuck that's a good show.

Seriously.

Do you have video or some other evidence of creepiness, or just more sweeping generalizations of gamers??

Hey, Jeff is a professional video game journalist.

I don't think he considers himself a games journalist, but I could be wrong.

Can't tell if serious.

Gaf is a collective of people with ranges of intellect, like the entire planet basically.

...I see.

And quote that image, god.

good shit.

What do you expect? Everyone should tolerate everything about everyone else all the time?.

Basically, yeah. If you're a dick to someone about something that doesn't hurt someone else, you're an asshole. You're making the world a worse place, if only by a minuscule amount. And yes, that applies to the more "out there" individuals.

I think we should ask...

MLP GAF, do you consider yourself a brony?

I do. The word only at first meant older male fans who liked the show. It only got its current form when fans decided they needed a label to ostracize the people in the fandom they don't like. I find that kind of high school identity politics distasteful, so I continue to use the word in its original definition.

Lol, nice deflection. I'm done with this thread and the creepy ass grown men buying little girls toys, defense force.

Every new person I meet is either with indifference or with an amicable disposition, but never outright dislike or hate. No sense hating someone you don't know.

No, really, I can't. If you couldn't tell, I was being facetious. Do you even understand the reference?

There's a large group of adult gamers who've spent a lot of money getting Skylanders figurines, this is undeniable.

You're original question seems to be asking 'are they as annoying as the guys in this specific video' to that I'll have to say, I don't know.

I'll never understand the obsession with this show. I've given it a fair try and I never saw anything in it that would make me want to watch it regularly. Both AT and RS blow it away.

I find the perpetual derision and ridicule, to the point of immediately declaring them sexual deviants and mentally ill, of the MLP fanbase, ubiquitous on the internet, much more unsettling than the weird fringe behavior of the fanbase itself. Apparently buying merchandise related to a show that doesn't correspond to you in gender and age demographics, is not acceptable social behavior and warrants untrust from your fellow peers.

To me, that simply seems bizarre and irrational.

It's when their more vocal group go into a discussion and start injecting pony memes and some such shit even though they don't belong there that annoys me. And before people go "But other fandoms do the same!", no they don't.
Well let's check this very pony thread.

Numbers wise? Sure, but break down by precentage of the fanbases and I think pound for pound creepy MLP fans beat creepy Supernatural fans.

Plus MLP would never have the balls to call the fans out and get in on the joke like Supernatural has.

I know a hardcore Supernatural fangirl, and yup, they can be creepy. But comparing Supernatural to My Little Pony is like comparing Batman to Family Circus. Plus, I don't think Supernatural fans tend to outwardly define themselves through their fandom, they tend to keep it within the community.
