GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Ok need some help, decided to convert my wbfs to fat so I could install my GC games....

I used wbfs2fat and that went fine, pc can see the drive all the files and stuff, but my Wii no longer sees it, I can use wiiexplorer and that sees it, but usbloader/gx/neogamm none of them will see the drive?

Any help would be super awesome....

I'm on the latest usbloader with the update meta.xml and I updated dx2 as well.

You have to update the parameters in your config.txt. configurable is probably still trying to find a wbfs partition on your drive

http://gwht.wikidot.com/configurable-options

Look on the bottom, first option under "Storage". make sure that your config.txt has a partition = FAT1 line

It's more likely that it's saved in your settings.cfg file. Just remove any "partition=" line in both files as then it should auto-detect the partition.

Just a quick question, are the brewmeisters that be already hard at work with what could be wiiu home brew or are they just waiting for wiius launch first before they even attempt to tackle it??

And how exactly should homebrew coders work on apps? They don't get free dev kits, you know...

Well this was kind of what I was thinking, maybe they were basing their work off what they know on wii, and could make the appropriate changes for wiiu? It's just a thought.
Prolly doesn't really work that way, does it? :(

I have a softmodded Wii due to the convenience of having my discs on a USB drive. Otherwise I haven't really kept up with the scene.

Anyway, I have a lot of virtual console games (legitimately purchased, of course) that I'm afraid I'll lose when the U comes out. Would it be wise to de-mod my Wii (assuming that's possible) soon in anticipation of the transfer? If so, is that complicated? I know when I did my 3ds to 3ds xl transfer, it made me update firmware on the old one, and I heard firmware updates can brick a Wii. Or is the community anticipating a fix within a reasonable time frame of the U launch? Any insight would be appreciated, I probably have purchased around $100 - $150 of VC stuff through the years.

You should be able to simply redownload those titles with no problems, at least that's how it was for me...or just transferr those games to wiiu, then I believe I would reformat my wii after deleting all home brew...I think that'll take care of it. You should be able to do all necessary updates freely after that without the worry of bricking. Im not sure there will be a wii update for the tranferr, so id simply redownload all your titles being that they are in your account already. Someone else with more knowledge may be able to help further.

We just don't know right now what the transfer system is going to be like and exactly what is going to transfer. You can guarantee that if they do somehow do something to react to the presence of the HBC or other apps during the transfer process, then a way will be made to block that.

I wouldn't do anything right now as whatever you do might not be enough and doing something may make it even harder to get your stuff transferred eventually. There are going to be a lot of reports available when the system does launch, so just check back then.

I'm not trading in my Wii so I can certainly wait to do a transfer - especially since there's no gamepad functionality for the files (at least yet). I suppose there's no rush and no real point to try to answer the unknown. Hopefully those who are smarter than me are thinking about how to proceed. I can just sense that it's going to be a pain. Thanks for the input guys.

Hello,
Sorry for the dumb question. But I've been looking at videos to help me get started, but they're all demonstrating on Windows, I only have OSX and was wondering if I could do it with my mac?

Most everything does work just fine on Mac. Don't use tutorial videos. Use the site you can find by clicking my username's tag or clicking the Mario image in the second post of the thread.

I'm also getting started.

However I've ended up with three Wii consoles and I've decided I'll dedicate one to just being a homebrew system. One is our original launch white one that belongs to our family, my other one is my special red Mario one, and I happened to pick up a black Wii for $99 (NZD) awhile back when they were getting rid of the last of the GC compatible ones. I think I'll use the new black one for homebrew.

Anyway, just popping in to ask a few questions:

Is the OP up to date? I notice all the images are broken.
If not, what should I follow for best results?
Are there any cool advancements since the OP that I should be aware of?

I'm looking to, if possible, have a setup where I just load everything off an external drive.

This is a brand new Wii so I have no concerns about firmware updates or wrecking my shop account or anything like that.

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Does anyone here still make menu themes, i've tried my hand at it several times without success. im decent at photoshop and dont have a problem with making images but when it comes to swapping them out for new ones, even if they're the same size I fail each time. My one and only triumph is being able to change the health screen...anyone wanna help me make a MhTtri theme? I can email you the images, just pm me.

The second post of the thread actually has the most up to date information compared to the OP, especially the Mario image. Or you can click the tag under my username to go straight to the GAF's Wii Homebrew Tutorial I manage. Not much has changed lately, so I haven't needed to do many updates. The biggest new thing is Gamecube support. The tutorial will walk you through all the basics you need.

Also, given your Wiis are likely PAL and at least one is new, might I ask if I can be your Wii Ambassador? Nintendo will give us both 500 coins to spend on the Wii Shop (in the Aussie store, but you can purchase and then switch to NZ if you want) as a reward for getting your Wii online (and homebrew won't interfere with that purchase). It can only be done within 30 days of you first accessing the Wii Shop on PAL Wiis, so it being new is important. PM me if interested and I'll let you know how to set it up, which is mostly just entering the code of my Wii, answering three survey questions and then giving me your Wii's code so I can confirm on mine.

Okay, I got one of those limited edition US Blue Wiis from last year, I saved it for my Mom so she could have a Wii of her own (she was looking forward to using it for exercise via WiiFit. The thing is, she lives in New Zealand, so I figured I'd get it Homebrew enabled which means less stuff I would need to pack if I came down.

Finally brought it down with me for a visit this week and have got it nearly ready to go. Just updated the Shop. Just FYI, Clipper, the shop updater doesn't seem to work anymore, had to use DOP Mii which worked fine, but I didn't need to install the IOSes as they were already up to date. Connected to the shop just fine.

Not the most important thing, but since this will essentially be a PAL Wii, I'm wondering is there a safe way to install the PAL versions of some of the extra channels like the News and Forecast channels (the Forecast channel especially has very sparse information for this part of the world). Yes I know, not that important, but I see my Mom as the casual type who might actually check it out and use those channels so I thought I'd ask and see if there was a safe way to do it considering the options are there in things like DopMii and I know people like changing the Shop channel from PAL to US or US to Japan and I don't see any need to change that particular channel.

EDIT: I'm also trying to install the Config USB Loader forwarder channel and I'm getting an error in the WAD Manager when it tries to mount the SD card. I'm pretty sure it's because it's an SDHC card (8 GB) and I don't have a 2GB > card handy. Will the regular FAT32 USB drives I use for games work?

You can install foreign channels if you are very careful (I can't remember the specifics and everything to look out for, though). What I'd actually consider safer is changing the region of the entire Wii, the Shop, Channels and System Menu together, although I can't give you specifics on that either apart from that it's a bit easier as I recall (although dangerous if you mess up).

And yes. You can use a FAT32 drive instead of the SD card to install pretty much anything. I mention it in the Ground Rules of the tutorial.

Suddenly my Disk Channel stoped acepting games ... original or backup.

Strangely enoght, the Gecko and other homebrew loaders still works ...

Time to make game backups on an hd.... right ?

Thanks Clipper!

I'm actually thinking now if I do this I'll buy a cheap Wii on its own to mod, or maybe wait until I get my Wii U and can transfer to my launch Wii and mod that, and keep that one sealed away brand new. But if I open it, yes you can be my ambassador of course! How close are you to 20?

I need a guide of how to delete my homebrew channel from my Wii before Wii U comes so I can transfer easily

We don't know what's involved yet. It's likely that Nintendo just won't care about the HBC and will allow transfer directly. Alternatively, they could go diving through your message board play logs and looking for various tickets stored around the place.

If you are worried about the transfer, then wait until the Wii U transfer process has been tested before doing anything. If it is detecting the HBC or any of the other telltale signs of hacking your Wii, then you can almost guarantee that a tool will be released to clean up all the signs Nintendo is looking for.

I'm actually quite surprised that Nintendo is allowing transfers from the Wii to the Wii U. Wouldn't that make the possibility of hacking the Wii U much more likely?

Internet is necessary for the transfer to work so Nintendo is likely constantly crosschecking whether all transferred data is valid and legit.

The last few times I've used my Wii I've been able to browse the Wii shop channel, but I can't seem to purchase or download any games. Is there a particular update I need? Is there a simple way to update from the Homebrew channel? I believe I'm on 4.3U.
It seems there was a recent update to the shop channel. I'm on 4.3u as well and it's asking me to update. Yours must have updated automatically.

Would anyone be able to help me with a BootMii issue?

I (accidentally) started up a NAND backup in BootMii, but it's been stuck on the same block for a few hours now, so I assume it froze for some reason. Is it safe for me to power off my Wii? It looks like there's a image that warns not to power off the system, so I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So how would I completely remove all the soft modding and go back to official firmware stuff?

In case some place actually has a decent Wii trade-in offer.........lol right

If you were just backing up to the drive, you're safe. Just switch it off. If you were restoring that backup, you're going to have to try again.

It s very difficult to do so right now. Formatting the Wii will make it look like it's on official firmware, which is probably all you need. You can do a full system update via Dop-Mii to revert all your IOSes to the official ones. Don't forget to delete BootMii if you installed it in boot2.

How do i uninstall the homebrew channel and bootmii? I wanna take them off just in case for the Wii U system transfer.

Use the installer and choose the uninstall options.

This won't totally delete all trace of them and we don't know what Nintendo will look for, so it may be useless to do this, though. I strongly suggest waiting for release so people can start checking out what happens and what is needed before doing anything.

Okay, I need some homebrew help again, lol. I rarely touch homebrew, but I really want to try something before I do my Wii to Wii U transfer.

This is probably going to sound silly, but I'd really like to completely get rid of a certain game on my system. I'm very picky when it comes to my video game collection, especially my digital collection. Anyway, I downloaded My Aquarium a long time ago from the Wii Shop Channel, but I really don't want it tied to my system anymore. Similarly, there were some DSiWare applications that I didn't want transferred to my 3DS either, but with the way that transfer process worked I was able to pick and choose which titles I wanted to keep. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way for Wii to Wii U transfer.

I'm not exactly the most knowledgable when it comes to Wii homebrew, but from my understanding it may be possible to delete all traces of a particular game from my system, including re-download rights from the Wii Shop Channel, using AnyTitle Deleter. Now, whether or not this would actually carry over to the Wii U is another question that I'm sure isn't known at this point, but I figure it's worth a shot.

But I believe I can't use AnyTitle Deleter on System Menu 4.3 normally, correct? I know it's possible to get it working, but I can't seem to find any simple step-by-step guides for doing just this. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated! I haven't really done any major system changes with homebrew before, so I'm scared that I might mess up something if I try to do it without having an easy to follow guide.

EDIT: Also, I already have the Homebrew Channel and BootMii installed, so that's already taken care of. I just need to know how to go about downgrading IOSes or whatever I have to do.

Hmm, so I just picked up a Wii to mod, but now I have it home and plugged in, it's already modded!

I have three channels sitting there: Homebrew Channel, cfg, and one called Wii Backup Launcher.

Is there anyway I can get a run down of what is exactly installed on this machine? I wanted to start from scratch and have it the way I want it, but I don't think this is possible now? I don't care what gets wiped, so is there some kind of full reset I can do so I can start from scratch and only have the stuff I want on there?

Or do you guys think it's fine to continue on with Homebrew as it is? I'm just worried there may be something dodgy on there.

Edit: There's no SD card and when I clicked into the Homebrew channel there's just bubbles floating up forever. Hmmm... Looks like I'd need their SD card or something to continue using their install?

What if I go to the Wii menu and hit Format Wii System Menu? Could I start from scratch after that?

Edit 2: Oh I can press 1 to see some options, maybe there's still hope yet?

Edit 3: I could just follow the "someone else hacked my Wii" thing, right?

The Homebrew Channel normally lists all applications that you have on your SD card. Since you don't have an SD card inserted, there's nothing shown.
I'd say keep it on the Wii, look at the tutorial and start from after the Homebrew Channel is installed, you will need it anyway.
And delete that "Wii Backup Launcher" channel (should be possible from within the normal Wii Data Management menu).

Cool thank you. I will give that a go.

I put an SD card in with the Homebrew Browser but I just get a stack dump and code dump after it says parsing homebrew list...

Is that channel you said to delete a dodgy one or something?

I've had homebrew on my Wii for ages, but haven't turned the system of for a long time and know I got half way through bringing it up to date the last time I did. Is there an easy way for me to find out what I've got configured and what steps I may still need to do to bring things up to date?

I'm a little out of the loop on the homebrew stuff. Hopefully this isn't a repeat, is it possible to update to the latest Wii Shop channel? I'm pretty sure I did it once ages ago with Dop-Mii I believe and was just wondering if it was still possible to do so?

Or should I just wait a few weeks and see what happens with transferring stuff over to the Wii U and such?

It's best to update everything by assuming it wasn't there to start with. You can delete additional stuff afterwards. Just run through the tutorial I link below, although you can skip the steps prior to installing the Homebrew Channel, just updating it instead. Do the instructions for everything else as if you hadn't installed them before. Delete Wii Backup Launcher using the Wii's System Menu. There is no use for it.

I strongly recommend dropping this plan. Just delete the game through the normal methods. If you are doing weird stuff so that the tickets on your system do not match your account on the shop, it may jeopardise your ability to perform any transfer. I doubt this extra title is worth that risk.

So, safe to update with the latest update? I want to try out that wii youtube channel.
Yes, the update is safe, I believe.

Just go through the tutorial and follow the update steps. Not much has changed in the last year or so, though.

The easiest way is just to run the official update. Alternatively, use Dop-Mii to update, but the official updates are safe right now.

Here's the tutorial I mentioned earlier:

Thank you Clipper. Apparently all the trouble I was having was because the SD card was on "lock"...
It's annoying because it said "lock" at the top of the switch, so I put it down, but apparently it's the opposite way around, or something, lol.

I'm trying to update the firmware through official means right now, but I'm getting error 32007. Anyone knows what's up with that?

Ah, good, so I'm not the only one. Supposedly it's a connection error, so I guess their update server is offline? But it's been like that at least the whole day.
