Interesting that there are so many young people with these beliefs. People are always claiming racism will take a hit once the "old people die off"...yeah...no.

Me just thinking (or rather typing) out loud here: is this actual racism, or just "XBL racism"? Growing up in Alabama during segregation, my mom was forced to deal true, genuine racism. When I get called names on XBL, I don't think of it as racism, but simply an as ass being an ass (i.e. the Unreal Tournament fuckwad theory =p)

Now don't get me wrong...."XBL racism" is by no means acceptable, but I don't think that the so-called hatred that they spew is as deeply-seeded or as genuine as it would be if this were the 1960s. But then again, I guess with Twitter and other social media sites, you're not really anonymous so the things they say are probably how they actually feel (instead of just saying something out of anger or frustration).

But even then, I have to ask: do these kids actually HATE other races? Maybe I'm just naive because I've never had to combat racism head-on. But I guess that if one is to be so foul, blatant and unapologetic about it (as this tumblr demonstrates), these people do probably possess at least a small amount of actual hatred/contempt.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but you have it backwards. Try to think of it in less emotionally personal terms. Instead of "Well what if they were just JOKING about taking the vote away from niggers" (which sounds ridiculous) ask instead: Are 'shoot first and ask questions later' tactics ever acceptable if the goal is to combat injustice? How can they be, if they may in fact create more injustice (however small that possibility might seem)?

I think it is important to ask these questions in situations like this. Doing so is not trying to defend the racists. It is trying to defend us from ourselves, to ensure that we do not stoop to the base impulses that drive what we are supposed to be fighting in the first place.



Do you think addressing a problem that is rooted in hatred with more hatred helps solve the problem? I don't.

Does responding to dissenting views with unbridled anger help combat ignorance? Even when those views are from those who share your goals but not your methods?

I was going to respond to this, but I just can't. You can think that you are the "bigger person" here but you are merely an enabler. Ignoring racism doesn't make it magically go away. These people having to face consequences for their racist, vile statements is not "shooting first." That's fucking ridiculous.
