Wii U eBay resale / sellout / availability discussion

It's called a business strategy. It's bad if demand outweighs supply, or vice versa.

You don't think it creates MORE hype when your system sells out the first day? I mean I am not saying they should handle it like Sony did last time around, but come on, selling out is not a bad thing.

People expecting to making a killing have probably been shocked how little they can make, $100 tops and that really doesn't make it worth it

I wasn't aware of the fire and protest. That certainly will impact sales due to even more limited quantities. But I think you are missing the point.

Lack of hype deliberately is what in part is due to the easier ability to find a console right this minute.

Least that is what some analysts, like Patcher, are claiming.

Either it's that or Nintendo just botched this launch horribly. (Possible, but not very probable, knowing the Big N's history and that gaming is their only bread and butter.)

It is very well possible that Nintendo is waiting with their big marketing push for a later date - when the demand by Nintendo fans and the gadget-lusty has been satisfied as to not create supply shortages.

But even with reduced numbers on store shelves compared to initial plans, I don't think scalpers are going to make off big in the coming months. I'm excited for the console myself (European launch), but I don't see much indication of huge demand that would render the device hard to find.

Hopefully next week supplies will be running low and demand high.

I'm 50/50 on whether im going to scalp my UK WiiU

Yes it will. But again, Nintendo is trying to manage that hype for the long term since there are limited amounts of Wii u's till the first of the year. Plus Nintendo is bound to sell out with Black Friday and Christmas coming. According to Neilson it's the second most wanted item with kids anyway. Santa will deliver.

It's not like the movies. Selling out day one isn't the only way to keep the sales train going.

Prices have come down to $390-$420 range. Not much profit for a seller who needs to pay

~$20 taxes from buying it
~$20 to ship it
~$20 in ebay paypal fees
Shipping is probably something that the buyer will pay, unless the seller offers free shipping that is. But if it is sold on Ebay for around $450, then Ebay will take about $40 in fees. There is definitelly not much profit to be had on the private WiiU sales right now.

Nintendo is trying to reduce hype to ensure the units are readily available....You guys have officially lost it.
Wasnt it the opposite that was said? Shipping fewer units, so it sells out quickly in an attempt to create more hype. I havnt read all posts here though, so i might have missed something.

GAF is always notorious for jumping the gun. Wait until after this weekend and try to find a deluxe system..

That is probably true given the black friday weekend. But, every single and Target and Walmart listed them as in stock this morning and yesterday in my MD area.

The top shopping day of the year is the Saturday before Christmas.

I only got 1 and my hope was making about $100 bucks in December. Out of the gate it was not going to be a sellers market. Can still make money right now. I just watched 1 Deluxe go $475 total cost. Average is around $425.

Worst case is I am happy to keep mine if it is in stock and the market dries up.

Interest can only stick with you for so long. After a while it'll go away. Many buyers like what's 'New' so you have to take advantage of that.

I have a natural predisposition to hate on those who flip electronics on eBay (and much more for the suckers who buy them) so I'm pretty content with how the matter with the "disappointing" launch of the WiiU has turned out in this regard.

I'll never understand people who need something so bad that they're willing to pay more than the MSRP. I mean, they'll be in store again eventually anyways, so why exactly would you pay more simply to have it now when you know the person on the other side is laughing their asses off because you're so dumb?

Thank you!

I live in D.C. and have had zero luck locating a Wii U. Several stores have them listed as "in stock" but none actually do. All the MD and VA stores included.

edit***
a couple have had the Basic packages in stock but I should mention I am specifically looking for a Deluxe.

Are they REALLY in stock though? As in, just walk in and buy one off the shelf? For example, I checked my Target on Sunday since it was next to the Gamestop I preordered at. The store tool says in stock but it was sold out on Sunday. I *think* if these stores are showing stock, their system may be wrong OR if they've gotten more in, they've probably been instructed to hold them for Black Friday. Good luck to those hunting. Except for flippers. Ya'll can wait haha.

I wonder how they keep that inventory. I put down 5 bucks on a pre-order coupon, but have no intention of buying it since it's not worth flipping. The reserve coupon says it's guaranteed to be held for 7 days. It's possible the computer accounts for those (until Sunday). Wonder if the computers will be more reliable come next week.

I think what also may be happening is that some stores that took pre-orders still have unclaimed units therefore still showing up in the system as "in stock". One of the Target's I contacted said they only had units from pre-orders in stock; it was one of the Target's listed as having them available.

Just saw this. Yes, exactly.

Are stores expected to get more before black friday? I'd naturally assume so but if there was indeed a manufacturing problem AND EU and JP launches still to go, I wonder if they will and how many if so?

They did because they actually got new units. I saw that they were in stock and headed over to target this morning. The family in line in front of me bought all the deluxe units. They had a single white one left by the time I got to the front of the line.

I just posted the same thing. I'm someone who's done this. If anyone knows somebody who wants a Wii U, they're only guaranteed for 7 days. So I would assume that means they'll be released Sunday morning. Wouldn't be a bad time to stand in line.

Agreed, but two months for a console is hardly "old." Even to the general public.

Waiting for my WiiU at Walmar launch night, I had a guy ask what we were waiting for. When we told him the WiiU he was shocked. He said he just bought the Wii last year. He had no idea there was a new system, since the Wii was still new to him.

Plenty of casuals will be the same. Nintendo just has to deliver that cross over titile ala Wii Sports.

I wish someone was selling at 500 dollars on mercado livre (kind of the brazilian Ebay). There was just a couple of guys selling the 8gb version for 2100 reais (almost 1050 dollars). And there's people buying!

Impossible to get a Wii u in here till the end of the year. :(

Lol people are impatient. You don't list it right away. Wait until a little over a week before Christmas. I'm hoping to get enough on my 2nd Wii U to pay for the one I'm keeping :)

I suggest you guys take a class of Econ 101.

It's obvious that a company wants to sell everything it makes at a high profit. However that's a pipe dream of a business strategy.

They have to have proper return on their investment. Nintendo doesn't have other areas to steal capital from like Microsoft and Sony do to help subsidize their gaming busineses. And outside of their last year in reports due to the 3DS, they have a champion of a track record.

Especially compared to Sony and Microsoft.

Outside of digital cameras and sensors, Sony has few areas to subsidize their gaming at the moment. Hopefully, that will turn around quickly.

Saw one sitting at my ghetto Wal Mart...still unsure about the system (Only want 2 games for it and nothing on the horizon) so I just left it there. Otherwise, I've still been able to find them lying around. We'll see after Friday!

1)Impatience
2)Hype from being sold out

I know but it's still illogical in my eyes. Order it online and in the worst case wait for a few weeks if you can't get one in store. I still remember a few years back when everybody was crying that they can't find a Wii but on amazon it was available within 2 weeks.

its crazy that back when the wii came out, people were willing to spend 300-400 dollars for the thing, fast forward to today and you can go to any gamestop and get a used one for 40 dollars, even less if you wait for pre-owned deals.

people paid like 1500 dollars for ps3s and now you can get one for 200 bucks

People were getting a lot more than 300-400 for a Wii in its heyday.

People paid that much for a PS3? I worked at GameStop for that launch and we sold-out of launch units and then sat the second shipment of PS3 systems for months. The systems we got in December we still had going into March.
