Wii U back in stock at GameStop

Wii U will be on sale for Black Friday? Where is this? People only buy stuff heavily discounted on BF, you know. They aren't going to plunk down for MSRP. They'll do that any other day.

No they do in fact buy stuff not on sale during Black Friday, what with it being basically the biggest shopping day of the year in the states.

People only line up for sales, that is true but it is the official start of holiday shopping and if your item is desirable for said holidays you will clean up tomorrow regardless of sale price.

Not quite sure if this is true. Many areas in my town that don't do sales (such as the downtown area) completely fill with people. It just gets people together, spending money, preparing for holidays, etc.

It will make everything better come NPD time.

I've no idea how it will do come NPD; but Wii U having stock is not a bad indication.

A lot of those sales make loses. They do that to get you in the store. Black Friday is basically the major retail day - everyone is buying for random deals but also picking up their Christmas purchases.

It would be disastrous (and stupid) for Nintendo not to have stock available for Black Friday.

Pretty much its going to get the most people to pass the Wii U in a store for a year (till next Black Friday); it'll give Nintendo marketing and also on the day sales.

If Black Friday were just for the sales it would be a 2 hour fire sale. Instead people use the day to go shopping; deals and Wii U's included.
Not to say its going to be the best seller; but its a big day for everyone, including the WiiU.

EDIT: Likely the 360 deals/price will push it above WiiU for the day; but not for the month.

I took this picture on Tuesday. This same stack was there on Wednesday. The system is easy to find unlike the original Wii.

this might even come in 2nd in NPD sales, did not expect so many to be out there

I'm sure once we find out it didn't out sell the 360.

Maybe, maybe not (most likely not). Really don't know what kind of Wii U stock we're looking at overall for this month. 360 sales are kind of a wild card too since I'm expecting it to be down from last year, the only question is by how much.

360 had 1.7 million in November last year. Big big number for both 360/WiiU to get near.

Wii Launch:

December
HW Sales (month and LTD)
Nintendo DS 1.6 mm 9.2 mm
PS2 1.4 mm 37.1 mm
GBA 850.7 K 35.1 mm
Xbox 360 1.1 mm 4.5 mm
Wii 604.2 K 1.1 mm
PSP 953.2 K 6.7 mm
PS3 490.7 K 687.3 K

So 1.1-0.6 = 0.5m Wii Units Sold in November

Hardly setting the world on fire is it? Massive massive supply constraint worldwide.
Thats why no one could buy the things.

Really? Fanboys who circle jerk about sales are so lame.

Meh. Their not jerking at someone elses expense. Just the success of a platform; which is a pretty big deal in this industry.

That's not how Black Friday works. The sales are loss leaders that get people into the stores, where many will end up buying non-sale items to go with or in place of sale items. It would be disastrous if people only bought sale items on Black Friday. Most people won't drive to the store just for a non-sale Wii U, but there are going to be a lot of people there for other things that might buy one. Even without a sale, you want to have stock tonight.

That's fine. I've made no claim either way on that matter.

My lols are directed at those who insist Wii U is a failure.
Yeah, regardless of how the sales numbers looks, i think that there will be much dicussion around it on both/all sides. It will take months before we see more of a longer term WiiU sales anyway.

Better for who, that is the question :) The Xbox 360 has a fair chance of outselling the WiiU, at least if November 2011 is anything to go by (1.7 million Xbox 360s sold).

Jumping back in time even further from 2011 and 2006:
http://uk.gamespot.com/news/npd-november-game-sales-down-18-percent-6141237

Speaking of the Xbox 360, the new NPD numbers showed that Microsoft sold only 326,000 units of the next-gen console during its first five days on the market. By contrast, the original Xbox sold more than 550,000 units in its first week of release in 2001. Sony's PSP, which launched in the US and Canada on March 24 of this year, sold around 602,000 units during its first seven days in stores. A consensus of analysts blamed the low figure on "limited quantities of Xbox 360 hardware," as Thomas Weisel Partners' Colin Sebastian politely put it.

Seriously all these numbers are a bit disappointing. Especially the Wii one what with people obsessing over it; I thought it was massive demand and Nintendo had supply for 'good' demand; instead it was for 'meh demand' lol.

The fact that WiiU is not out of stock 24/7 is only a good thing looking at a lot of this.

Should outsell the 360 launch, and should outsell the Wii launch. I'd think just off the pre-order stuff we have and the replenishment rates being much much better than the Wii.

[Nintendo basically had no units left; it wasn't that demand was all the way to insanity squared - even though it kind of was; slightly more than expected demand would have skewered them]

Am I the only one kind of excited by the Wii U potentially not selling well as Nintendo hoped?

Obviously I don't want it to sell horribly, but desperate Nintendo is the best Nintendo. I think the 3DS already has a better first party lineup than the DS.

I'm sure most if not all of the first party games we got were already planned prior to release. I'm confident that Nintendo is going to announce quite a few quality games this year.

I'm amazed that there are still consoles available.

Now that the system is out there and being played, word will spread about it. If its still readily in stock the week before Christmas, then sirens will be blaring at Nintendo. That said, all it will take is one anecdote of a store being in stock and someone will take that as more doom and gloom.

It will never be the Wii again(old people will not give a shit about it), but it's not going to fail. My young daughter and all her friends used it for hours this afternoon. Not playing games. Just drawing pictures and posting them to Miiverse.
I disagree, I know plenty of "oldsters" who really like the video chat function and think the wiiu would be fun to tinker with. I guess things could go either way and only time will tell :)

I mean launch months aren't really HUGE months for any platform. Especially against Christmas sales.

This is very true. When launched over Black Friday:
Wii = 0.5m
360 = 326k

360 is down 30% yoy; so in direct terms thats 1.1m
But its growth last year was partly at the expense of other platforms. It does have Halo/BLOPS2 however, and a Halo bundle.

I do think the Wii U will outsell the PS3 though. 360 likely will be on top; but we'll see.

I honestly never expected the WiiU to be sold out, not because I think no one wanted it, but because Nintendo would be foolish to repeat the Wii. Being sold out nationwide from a PR point-of-view sounds great and Nintendo could beat their chest over being the hot item, but it was devastating for marketing. Nintendo lost money because people could not find Wiis and they could not keep up with the demand. It also showed Nintendo that they actually priced the Wii too low. For marketing, you want to reach that sweet spot between charging enough to make people buy, but not charging too little to the point that you are given the system away. I expected that Nintendo would not repeat that mistake again and would have a sudden supple of WiiU from the start. For us, it is not as dynamic or exciting as seeing stores sold out, but this is far better for Nintendo.

Also, launch is never really an indicator of future success. The Gamecude had a very strong launch and first six month before it fall and the Xbox 360 had a very modest launch and first eight months.

I think the reason why Nintendo was not as aggressive with their marketing as the Wii was because unlike the Wii people know what it is. The Wii is not an unproven name, people know what it is and what they are most likely to expect. The WiiU does not have the novelty of being shockingly new. The tablet controls are new, but it is something people have seen and experience before unlike motion controls. Nintendo also does not have to as aggressive. They have an entire year to themselves to make mistakes and establish itself. It is not going against a new Playstation or the year head start of the Xbox. They have the field pretty much to themselves since the PS3 and the 360 is not the WiiU's true competition much like how the PS2 was not the 360's true competition when it launch.

Either way, we will have to wait until NPD or if Nintendo themselves tell us the final number. Trying to base anything on assumptions will just lead to a circular argument.

Tried to find a Deluxe tonight at Target all they had was Basic. After seeing the amount of people at this out of the way Target I came home no use in looking anymore tonight. I'll have to wait for my # on the GS waitlist.

a poorly advertised system with no clear vision at launch, or major support for the next year has trouble selling stock shortly after launch? i've had this dream before.

The WiiU is in a completely different situation than the Vita. The Wii, despite the revision of history here on Neogaf, was the console winner and does have advantages not granted by the PSP who came in at a distance third to the DS. The Wii has Capcom and Enix supporting it very early. Even if they are ports, both are big games in Japan and Nintendo does have multi-plateform support unlike the Wii who did not even get down ports but throw away PS2 titles.

Nintendo also purposely never told us about games coming next year, so it is dismissive to say that they have no major support for next year since we do not know either way. Nintendo is not Sony who have a habit of putting up labels of games that are not even in development. We most likely have to wait until after Christmas to see what is the support of the WiiU have from third parties. Also, I should remind everyone that the Wii sold out for months without any real strong third-party support. Even the 360 had a hard time getting third-party games that were not PC and PS2 ports.

major support would be things like having, say, tomb raider, or bioshock, or grand theft auto. big games that people would like to purchase. they might bring them to the system in the future, but lack of same-day is a terrible thing.

I always thought that newly launched consoles sold well on black friday at full price.

The fact that this is a problem with current gen ports is pretty damning for the future. It really isn't looking like the Wii U is going ride the success of the Wii very far. I think it'll probably end up being a better console though. Seeing Nintendo do HD first party games is going to be something else.

Who knows though, it's still super early.

I think Nintendo screwed up with SKUs, they probably should've released just the Deluxe version this year and then launch the Basic next Christmas for $249. The system would be better prepared for the mass market by then, right now it has value mostly for Nintendo fans who buy it for $349 without hesitation.

As far as we know, these games could be in development, but we simply do not know. I will agree that some western third-party are in no hurry to support the WiiU, but at the same time we cannot say that there is no support down the line. The WiiU already have an advantage over the Wii since it can take ports, but the real test of support will come when we see game specifically made for the WiiU. Just getting ports of multi-plateforms will only take you so far.

On another note, I really do not think developers can afford to ignore the WiiU. With the cost of development going up and the declines of current system sells, third-parites would be crazy not to give the WiiU some form of support. For many, they cannot afford to make the same mistake as last time.

Mrbob, I know about AniHawk, but several posters do feel this way and I just wanted to put this out there. There is a lot of revisionist history happening on Neogaf and I just want to set history straight.

Aside from being a Nintendo console not one thing you brought out from the Wii launch has any remote similaritie to what is going on with the Wii U

Vita must have really coloured your perceptions of brand power and major support:

it'll probably do very well for itself, if the psp is any indication.

yeah, yeah, the ps2 -> ps3 transition and ds -> 3ds transitions weren't all that smooth, but i don't think the absence of monster hunter is as big a problem as people are making it out to be.

People need to stop pretending the in-stock WiiU says anything.
We know its being sold out and replenished. We have no idea to what degree.

Nintendo is supplying to be in stock from Black Friday to Christmas.
Some of the reactions in here are just weird.

All we can say is that being in stock doesn't say anything about sales; but if sales come in strong then Nintendo has a great supply set up now.

Meanwhile the numbers to look for are:
- Wii 2006November Launch = 500k
- 360 2005 November Launch = 326k

Am thinking the same but they should sell very well tommorrow; and they should sell very well in the run up to Christmas.
Part of the Supply will be connected to production so hopefully that can be shifted (basic's should be easily upgradable and Deluxe should easily be downgradable as well)

They are selling though.

How so? We do not even have the full picture of the WiiU so how can we say with certainty that nothing is the same and why should everything be the same. Despite the names, the Wii and the WiiU are different systems with a different set of challenges and advantages. We cannot exactly copy and paste the Wii situation with the WiiU.
