Wii U eBay resale / sellout / availability discussion

Wow pretty bad in my area. Pretty much all the stores have Wii Us in stock. The only thing that seems to be out of stock is the 199 PS3 bundle.

I thought for sure all the Wii Us would be gone after the BF flood.

lack of demand or over-stock

all launches should be like this

imo

waiting in line to spend your hard-earned cash is complete fucking bullshit and insulting to the consumer

i know this is kinda OT but I thought "the new ipad"(ipad 3) WAS the ipad with retina display

Apple was criticised plenty for their new iPad naming scheme. It is definitively confusing to the casual consumer, and the same applies to the Nintendo Wii U.

In hindsight, they probably didn't name the "new" iPad the iPad 3 because they knew it would be obsoleted half a year later and avoided a bit of consumer outrage this way as most casual purchasers probably didn't notice the iPad 4 release along the iPad Mini.

is it really that surprising? people are looking for deals this week, a fully priced wii u isn't all that appealing with that mindset

It's gonna the same with Orbis/Durango. Consoles just aren't as exciting anymore to the mainstream thanks to tablets, smartphones and what not.

Got back from an Auburn Hills, MI Meijer today where I picked up Zombie U. Asked about the hardware, and they sold out of their launch shipment of 8 consoles (4 basic and 4 deluxe). Then they got another shipment of just 4 basics, and those sold out quickly.

Very interested in seeing the hard numbers, hopefully soon.

Actually it is. The whole scheme behind BF is to have "doorbusters" to get people in the doors in the hopes that they also buy regular priced goods. The Wii U is supposed to be the new shiny electronic gadget that everyone wants this xmas, but the fact that its so readily available means it most likely will not be the big xmas gift this year.

Not if you can buy the same thing on your PS3/360. Call of Duty isn't a console seller, and the Wii U is proof positive of that.

There is so much wrong with this statement. COD didn't come out on the same day as they other systems. Wii U/Nintendo released next to nothing about their online gaming service before the system launched and next to nobody associates online shooters with Nintendo.

Right. I really doubt the next CoD is going to be a PS4/720 exclusive. 3rd parties will milk PS360 for a while longer.

This was in an article linked in another thread I just read.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/25/t...-takes-aim-at-a-changed-video-game-world.html

Initial demand appears high. GameStop, the video game retailer, opened 3,000 stores at midnight on Thursday for Black Friday sales, and before long almost all its Wii Us were sold out, according to Tony Bartel, GameStop’s president. “I think people are starving for innovation, and Wii U is giving them that innovation," Mr. Bartel says.

8GB unit just went for retail on ebay

Deluxe just went for $400

Guessing it won't be long until deluxes are going for close to retail.
I wonder how long people will keep reselling the WiiU. A deluxe model selling for $400 means that the seller is barely breaking even, or maybe even losing money depending on sales tax. If it sells for $400, it is about $35 in Ebay fees and about $12 in Paypal fees. Then they got a $3 profit, or $15 if they find a free way to recieve the money without having to pay any fees.

Ofcourse the next one won't, it will be out next year and be a cross gen game just like BF4 is rumoured to be. Where the 2014 version ends up will be more telling.

My only point is that next year (presumably when Microsoft launches), I don't think CoD is going to be any sort of system seller.

What else can Nintendo do? Door to door sales?

In case someone doesnt remember, this is from the first Wii commercials, where they (Nintendo) traveled to peoples' houses and showed them the Wii =)

Didn't stop them from dropping Game Boy...

Well if you go back to how the originally the Nintendo DS was marketed it was setup as the 3rd pillar (3rd system they called it) to the Game Boy Advance and the Gamecube back in 2004.

Some thing I notice about the Wii U over thanksgiving when family was over they didn't notice at all that its a new console. In fact when I was setting the console up for the first time they thought I bought one of the newer blacked colored Wii's when my Wii from launch was sitting right next to it. The only other time this happen was with 3DS they thought it was just another redesign (I wouldn't be shocked if it with the Vita if I own one too). Its the same thing with iphone and ipad they can't tell the difference between the two by just looking at it. It might been better if they paired the new console unit it self(that has a different case) with the game pad. The gamepad took a little while to sink in but they finally got what the this "New Wii" is.

Well depending on how things go Nintendo should announce something by midweek. Waited 9 days to report first 8 days of sales of Wii which was 600,000 in NA in 2006.

"You won't be able to just waltz into the store and buy one, day one"

is the new

"You'll be able to just waltz into the story and buy one, day one."

Good news. I've been noticing that the reports of seeing unsold Wii u's on store shelves have come from stores that aren't gamestop like best buy and target. Seems interesting to me. But in my experience, The Wii U has been gone from almost every toys r us Ive come across in NYC which isn't surprising since the Wii U Is often featured in their holiday "Why shop anywhere else for toys? Why?" Commercials

2 Gamestops in my area had them today. TRU and Best Buy did not.

The shipments have been really weird from what I have gathered going around. Some places were sent a ton of units while others barely got enough to cover preorders and in some cases some didn't even get enough for that.

My gamestop for launch had enough systems for preorder but did not get a single NSMBU,ZombiU or BLOPSII in with their shipments. They were freaking the fuck out having to send people all over town to get copies of the games from stores that got like 100+ of each in while they got nothing.

Idk, don't you remember how long the bros stayed on the OG Xbox playing Halo 2? Plus bros are poor.

Haha the bros definitely are poorer these days.

Being that this is the first major console launch I have skipped and actually feel good about the pressure is definitely on the PS4 or 720 to excite me with day 1 content. There are just too many forms of great entertainment to be had all over the place for me to pick something up on principle anymore.

Couldn't this availability be due to Nintendo flooding the supply lines with stock? I know in the UK the initial supply is being sent out for launch day but a second batch is being sent out 5th December. That's pretty Damn fast compared to the Wii stock issues.

There's still money to be made
I can buy at 275 and sell at 315 whereas with state sales tax it'd be 320 here. $40 profit per flipped Wii U
And I dont have to worry about online sales tax dodgers getting it at $299 on the dot, as it's usually only offered in store only most places.

But that's not my point. The reason why Call of Duty is not a console seller is because people buy Call of Duty to play with their friends. Everyone that guy plays with has a 360 right now. 2-3 of them might get a 720.

Now.. Once the console has had time to saturate the market and "fix" the whole 'my friends don't have/can't get one' problem, then yeah people will buy a console to play Call of Duty. At launch though? Nah. CoD won't push sales.

What a pain in the ass for $40 bucks.

You might be ble to make that argument against vita/3ds but a console that plugs into your big HDTV and surround setup? Apples and oranges

Yes, it's possible. They've been vocal about how they'd have much more stock than the Wii debacle.

Probable? Who knows. We'll see at NPD. I think it's clear they sold through the initial shipment. Doesn't look like the second one did.

I don't know. Personally, given how closely Nintendo is launching this system in the different worldwide markets, my suspicion is that they weren't able to "flood" the market. I don't doubt that they manufactured more this go around than they did with the Wii, so the supply might be "better than normal" compared to a typical console launch. Still, I highly doubt that they manufactured enough of these things so that there'd be enough sitting on store shelves even now to accommodate even high demand.

And even if it were the biggest console launch ever, that's still taken in a vacuum (since the biggest still isn't very big). The 360 is going to be the best selling console this holiday season. We all know the Wii U worldwide numbers through March 2013. They don't have the inventory to sell 2 million in December like 360 is going to.

Which means there may be decent supply, but it's not endless. Which means why is there such soft demand on ebay? It can only be because there's soft demand everywhere. Whether it's because it's a machine without an audience, horrible product awareness on the part of Nintendo, a combo, whatever. It's kind of besides the point.

If Nintendo doesn't release a PR statement within the next week crowing about something, I think it's best for people to brace for disappointing NPD numbers when they're released in January.

Dreadful news.
Absolutly dreadful.

We know in the states they got a second shipment before Black Friday.
Wii didn't even sell that much the Supply/Demand issues were humongous.

So I picked up a standard edition on day two at TRU. It is a Christmas gift for my girls (and me). Bought NSMBU and Nintendoland.

Fast forward to last night and my local TRU had a couple deluxes in stock. I grabbed one and am now faced with a dilemma. I don't know which one to keep.

I actually paid less for the standard and the two games due to the TRU buy on get one 40% off sale. I'm not sure we'd ever use the extra storage and I actually like the looks of the white one.

Is the only other difference the vertical stand and stand for the gamepad?

I think what may have happened is that a lot of people were not all that happy with the Wii overall and are not going to repeat that with buying a Wii U. It is important to finish strong from one generation to the next, and Nintendo completely dropped the ball. There was no momentum going into the Wii U launch as any casual fans Nintendo gained a few years ago have forgotten about them now and Nintendo let that happen by not supporting Wii the last 2 years just about.

This also needs to be a clear message to Sony and MS-- people are not that excited about tablet controllers for consoles-- keep it simple with traditional controllers and you will be just fine.

I hesitate to declare "soft demand everywhere" yet, as it was clear Nintendo was ready with an immediate second shipment, something that didn't happen with the Wii.

I can't find the link, but I vaguely recall Nintendo saying they had a much higher amount of these ready for launch when compared to the Wii. Could be remembering incorrectly, though.

I expect the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Increased supply and reduced demand.

Not a knock-out record breaking launch, nor a 'Nintendo is doomed' failure.

I'm sure we'll know in a few weeks.
