Nintendo sells 1.2 million hardware units (400K Wii U, 300K Wii, 275K DS, 250K 3DS)

300,000 Wii's.

I do wonder if it wasnt possible to avoid all confusion with wii u and wii and turn many of those 300,000 wii buys into wii u purchases?

The Wii got several attractive bundles in the last few weeks. When picking up my Wii U at GS the two customers before me both left with new Wii bundles for Christmas presents.

Looks like the Wii has descended into the lower-class threshold - where the PS2 used to sit - for parents that want to get their kids a game system but can't afford more than 100-200 out the door. The huge supply of cheap secondhand games isn't hurting either.

Pretty sure they shipped a lot more than 400K.

The same source that is giving us the sell-out numbers, give us also this comment:
"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock," Fils-Aime said. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately"

So, I doubt that they shippet a lot more than 400k.

BTW, it's a debut that give us few elements to judge the market interest in the console, especially because of the shipments.
We will have to wait until the next few months to properly judge if the market likes the product or not.

You can thank absolutely awful marketing for those sales.

It's not necessarily marketing. It's the goddamn name.

Nintendo should realize that adding a 2 at the end of the name would all but completely avoid confusion. Wii 2 and DS 2 should have been the names for Wii U and 3DS.

Nintendo need to kill off the DS. I know it still sells but those DS sales could easily have been 3DS sales if the DS was fazed out.

people did not mistake the wii for the wii u. that's mostly the result of the new wii bundles.

I did expect a bit more from 3DS, but hardware sales are hurting across the board

Doomed right? It's completely normal, Wii U is more expensive han Wii at launch, plus, the econmy has seen better days.

Now, portables sold quite well, right?

WOW you haters.. The Wii U sold out.. That's good regardless of how you want to spin it.. The Wii U launch was a huge success in America. Europe is next so we will see how it fairs in Sony Land..

Initial estimates were they would sell out and that's great. Especially since the Wii at sub 100.00 did 300,000.. a 300-350 console sold very well.

Just stop trying to bash the Wii U at every turn we get it some of you don't like it fine.. Who really cares.. Your choices in consoles don't need to be defended...

Lets see if the Wii-U can maintain a good sales pace in the next few weeks however..

Bu-but...they told Gamespot stock avaliable...Vita amazon sales...hard locks.
Could somebody please, find Ja Rule so I can make sense of all this?

Those are decent for a console launch and suggest Nintendo really has just made a shitload of Wii U's.

Those 3DS numbers are the real story here. That is not good.

Whoa there, cowboy. Simmer down.

I see so nintendo for now wants to keep the wii alive.

"Hmmm, there's a white one... and a black one... oh! But this one with the sharper edges is only $99 and comes with Mario Kart!"

Lol at Wii and DS cannibalizing their succesors.

DS has been doing it for way too long now. I don't get why don't they just kill it.

wii sold 600k and you had to cut some throat to get one before xmas.

wii u sold 400k and people are already tripping over them in the street.

Don't see how the Wii U is sold out when you can walk into virtually any store near me and buy one. I bought one on Saturday without even looking, just impulse purchased it.

Honestly, I don't understand these comments.
It's not that those costumers were looking for a Wii U and picked up the wrong console.
They were costumers looking for big deals for the Wii tiwh interesting budnles for the masses, at a cheap price (especially Skylanders Giants and Just Dance 4 bundles).

Costuemrs looking for a cheap Wii in its 6th year on the market ar not the target the Wii U is looking for at launch (early adopters).

how are you holding up dorfdad? is everything okay?

Not sure if those saying this is bad are serious... It was practically impossible to do much better at launch period. There simply weren't even enough machines to top Wii since production isn't exactly as easy this time around. Not that anything less than Wii is bad anyway (I think that in a hypothetical situation where both Wii and Wii U weren't supply constrained Wii's launch would have won by a larger margin). They haven't even really marketed the thing full force yet since there's little point in wasting that kind of money to hype people who won't even be able to purchase it due to lack of stock.

Oh they did.
Not everyone obviously.

I saw Wii's being sold with copies of NSMB U.

since these things are sold as soon as they are in stock, i'm waiting for Reggie to offer me $1200 to find a WiiU in stock, because there are loads around me

DS has been doing it for way too long now. I don't get why don't they just kill it.

People always say this, but Nintendo make a shit ton of profit off from the Wii and regular DS. Why kill something when you're making profit off from them, and at the same time losing money on 3DS and Wii U sales?

Nintendo just needs to do a better job of differentiating the products.

because it makes money, which is going to absorb their eventual losses if they decide to price cut their latest consoles

They would have sold A LOT more 3DS units if they actually had a legit holiday bundle. That $170 3DS with Mario 3D Land pre-installed was just garbage.
