Nintendo sells 1.2 million hardware units (400K Wii U, 300K Wii, 275K DS, 250K 3DS)

Just browsing Wiis on Amazon for the heck of it.

When did this blue model happen?

IIRC that color was a Wal-Mart exclusive awhile back (2010??)

3DS is down almost 50% compared to last year. Total hardware sales are down as well (1.5 million in 2011)
Yeah, I thought so. Those are bad numbers for the 3DS.
What is the minimum amount of 3DS's that needed to be sold for "good" sales.
I kinda expected 700k for a Nintendo handheld during the holidays. I've been out of touch with sales a bit so I figured their production wouldn't keep up. Turns out the demand has just flattened.

Wii U launched strong, really good numbers there and I imagine they will stay strong throughout the holiday. But Nintendo really needs to kill the DS in NA. It's stealing 3DS sales left and right.

Comparisons to the Wii's first week are absolutely appropriate, but don't forget an important point - those Wii's were all sold at 249.99 with a game bundled in. The Wii U is selling at 299.99 with no game bundled in, and at 349.99 with a game bundled in.

Hard to do a proper comparison, but if you figure 400k WiiU's at ASP of 325 vs. 600k Wii's at ASP of 250, you're talking $130,00,000 revenue for WiiU vs. $150,000,000 for the Wii. Obviously Nintendo doesn't get all of that.

Of course that's very back of the envelope, and doesn't even consider profit margin (which would require knowing how much the Wii U is losing, how much the Wii made, and a lot of info about software (digital and retail) besides).

What's crazy is that Sony managed to sell 200k PS3s at 599 US DOLLARS.

The numbers look good, except for 3DS. I'm surprised DS and Wii are still selling at all, given that Nintendo stopped supporting those systems in 2010 or so.

Wii U launch numbers are better than all but the Wii and the PS2, so that is definitely a good thing for Nintendo.

It sold less than the wii, how can you say they are just being faster? It sold less..

I didn't say that. Read it again.

I get that the Wii is cheaper. But no one is making wii games now. You could have gotten a 360 for $150 on black friday

Good thing the Wii has a massive library of titles that have already released.

Legacy consoles sell. Ps2 sold for years after the PS3 released. ditto Super Nintendo and Genesis.

Wii and DS are cannibalizing sales. The price is impacting Wii U and 3DS as well.

It was a decent launch; I don't think the madness has set in yet.

None of the NDS and 3DS numbers really matter if you don't take promotion into account. Units without context of price are meaningless figures.

The shocker there is Wii at 300k. That's a huge improvement over recent performance, any particular reason for this other than a seasonal bump?

Are all those numbers one week btw?
Cause then the 3DS is actually alright and the DS is just the sales.

Sales probably. Be interesting if the Wii Mini rumour is true.

Ouch for 3DS. Price cut now makes a lot of sense.

Heaven and earth needs to be moved to ensure that next holiday's lineup is better for 3DS. Expecting Paper Mario and the fifth annual Layton game to carry the platform through Christmas was pure insanity. They should talk to Game Freak and ensure that the next generation Pokemon games are out next Christmas, BW2-style.

The Wii has always done really, really well with seasonal bumps. It had a huge bump last year, too.

400k seems fine to me, based on the mangled launch and few reasons to actually own the damn system. But I don't really put much stock on day one sales. There's always demand, if just from the most dedicated audiences. Post-holiday sales and momentum do a better job of indicating how popular hardware is.

I actually watched the Wii/Wii U displays on Black Friday (after the rush) and noticed that some older consumers actually knew the Wii U was "that new Nintendo Console". One was grey haired and at least over 55. I was pretty shocked. That said, there were still ~4 Wii U deluxe versions on the shelf, though it appeared the large cabinet had been full.

While Wii U hasn't hit Wii numbers a couple of things to remember. The economy is much worse then when Wii launched. Gamecube wasn't going to garner any sales. Compare that to parents still interested in purchasing a Wii at less than $100.

3DS lacked bundles and games (kinda), but price cut will boost sales.

I wonder how many people saw the Wii U commercial then went out and bought a Wii, saying "I bought that new Wii I saw on TV the other day, it was only $90!"

Where does that 50% drop for 3DS come from?

Last year Nintendo didn't provide figures for 3DS.

I have a feeling that was made up. Last year it was 795k for the month.
Least are just the last week right?

yeah they are for one week

Thanks. Well yeah 3DS lacked bundles but DS likely had big cuts on software and hardware and you know...

So yeah 3DS looks fine to me. Long as the month is fine too.

Wii having a great Black Friday. I wonder if 360 will take a greater hit then? It became so big because Wii ducked out the market. With that and WiiU it could be down a bit.
Halo bundle should help.

WiiU...meh not great; not bomba; we'll see how next month goes.

Given the economy is weaker than it was back in 2005, I would suggest to Microsoft and Sony not to create something that costs too much when you can buy cheap tablets that are good enough.

Jan-Feb-March will be telling. Isn't that when PS3 started to tank after launch?

I just worked out the low numbers and higher wii numbers.

Gonna be a lot of pissed off kids on Christmas day, all excited. WiiU, WiiU, WiiU, WiiU, ohhhh Wii. You got me that last year wahhhhhhhhhhh wahhhhhhhhhh :(

It was 89 bucks at Walmart. There were people lined through the store to get one on Black Friday.

Those DS numbers, super impressive that it is still chugging along like that. Wii U launch numbers seem uninspiring, but not enough so to call it a flop? It'll be interesting to see how the system fares up until Christmas, is there any chance better stock replenishments could help the WiiU sell strong over the Holidays? Or is it likely to dull any sort of frenzy around the system, sending the message that it's just not that desirable a product?

While I agree with your general assessment (that long-term, post-holiday sales matter most), systems can bomba out the gate. Vita says 'hello'.

From the other thread, all previous hardware launches (credit to lunchwithyuzo).

Previous NPD November launches for comparison:

Xbox (2001) 720,000
Gamecube (2001) 660,000
Nintendo DS (2004) 370,000
Xbox 360 (2005) 326,000
PlayStation 3 (2006) 197,000
Wii (2006) 476,000

Sure, but it launched in October. Here's the non-November launches:

PlayStation 2 (Oct 2000) 390,000
Game Boy Advance (Jun 2001) 880,000
PSP (Mar 2005) 620,000
Nintendo 3DS (Mar 2011) 390,000
PS Vita (Feb 2012) 220,000

Edit: important to note that

There's usually a difference between NPD numbers and shipped numbers though.

Nintendo just fucking kill off the DS already. this is getting embarrassing. The 3Ds and DS sales have been way to close in the past few NPDs

Not bad considering Wii U has had the worst marketing I've seen in a while plus mixed responses from the press. Not sure wtf NOA was thinking.

Ruh roh on both fronts. The 3DS price cut is definitely a result of this.

Wii U needs to sell faster, it's not sold out from what I saw.

Honestly a lot of the worse sales are due to NoA's incompetence. There was the terrible and confusing Wii U marketing and then there is the lack of a holiday 3DS line up. Originally it was going to be Luigi's Mansion and Paper Mario. That is already a "meh" sort if line up as it is, but then Luigi's Mansion gets delayed beyond holidays and Paper Mario turned out to be the worst in the series (from what I've heard). Having Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem would at the very least create a more rounded line up.

What is the minimum amount of 3DS's that needed to be sold for "good" sales.
Preferably a number greater than the DS.
