The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Mod Discussion and News [Creation Kit released]

I downloaded & installed Skyrim 2K and Climates of Tamriel tonight, but couldn't get acceptable performance with Superb ENB-RL (< 20 FPS in certain areas). Out of curiosity, I disabled ENB-RL to see the difference in performance, and the results were staggering. I'm getting 50-60 FPS across the board now, resulting in a far better experience across the board. Very pleased with this!

I'm done with ENB. The performance hit is simply not worth it.

Just choose profiles that don't use SSAO. That's the resource sink. I run the Wilds profile and I still get a solid 60 FPS.

Yep. As much as like how some ENB profiles can make the game look, the performance drop is pretty ridiculous. Plus as I have mentioned before AMD cards are not optimized to the lvls that Nvidia cards are for ENB and Skyrim.

Even turning off DOF, SSIL and AO in the ENB ini still results in a big drop in performance. I've found reducing your resolution makes the biggest difference in ENB performance. Simply dropping down from 1920x1080 to 1360x768 or 1280x720 will net you(in my case anyways) 12-15fps gain. I'd go from 30-35fps @ 1080p to 42-50fps @ 1360x768.

But I have a hard time playing at anything other than 60fps once I've experienced it.

I'm sure I'll fool around with it once I change from this 6950 2GB to a 670 or 680

I have a GTX 680, an i5 3570K, and zero modding experience. I would like to run Lime's build of Skyrim Jasmin but I have no idea how. I tried last night and found that files were overwriting each other and I ended up with a buggy mess.

I PMed Lime, but I don't know if he/she is available. Would someone be willing to help me? I have Steam and Ventrilo access.

Yea he/she has a lot of texture packs and mods that change textures and will overwrite others. Reading the description on each mod page you'll see texture mod makers will generally give a bit of advice as to when to install their mods too. As a general rule its best to treat mods like a painting. Take care of the big background stuff first and then work your way down to the smallest details letting those overwrite the bigger ones. It's not always the case though. There's a way to combine the big texture packs so they don't overwrite but eventually when the smaller ones go in they will want to overwrite things anyway. So the best thing to do is to wait for Lime to give you a bit of advice.

In the mean time you should download BOSS if you haven't already and give it a run and see if things improve for you. It's the type of program that really cant do any harm and can get your game up and running if it's the load order causing probs. It wont help with overwritten textures though. :P

Does anyone have this problem with ENB mods where it makes these kinda lines on the skin when your close to light sources like fire?

I can help you with modding and enb stuff. you can add me on Steam if you like under "fuuraisen"

Since you wanna use enb and like the jasmin enb, why don't you check out this enb too. You might like it more.
Here is a pic from it

I've never had any of that and I've used most of the popular ENB's. Check out this page and see if any of the obvious things there are your problem.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with random framerate drops?

Randomly, after fast travelling or entering/exiting a building, my framerate just drops to like single digits. Then, if I exit the game and reload everything will be fine again. It doesn't happen every time, and it happens in large exteriors and small interiors, lots of shadow casting lights or pitch black... Sometimes if I let it just sit for a second the frame rate comes back, but sometimes I need to reload, and sometimes reloading doesn't make a difference... So I don't know. It's very much like the FPS issues I was having when the game first came out.

I've got a GTX 560ti, intel i7 and 8 gb of ram

I am running most of the mods lime listed in bold a couple posts back.

Is RCRN compatible with Project Reality? I see they both change interior (dungeon in particular) lighting. I want to use a RCRN preset for Lanterns of Skyrim so I don't have random red lighting when everything else is normal-colored light.

I use the default preset and it changes the lights to yellow. They are still not quite as bright as normal lights but that's the design. You could choose 2x brightness setting maybe. It turns out with Lanterns of Skyrim you must use a preset -any preset- to avoid the red lights. You wont need to install RCRN and as far as I know even just using the RCRN preset means it's optimised for that mod but you could still use it if you don't have RCRN.

Cool, thanks. I'd check it but I'm only halfway through my Nexus browsing, it'll probably be another hour or two before I even log in :p Decided to wipe the slate and start over with my mods since I'm starting a new character.

Wanted to give Frostfall a whirl but it won't be compatible with Climates of Tamriel until the version currently in beta is released :(

It happens to me quite a bit. Afaik it's just game instability or whatever, the longer you play the longer it happens, also it can get worse if you enter/exit cells many times. It's probably a mod that does it or a certain combination of them, for example enhanced blood textures caused my game micro stutter and freezes, and even CTDs in the open. Beware of using many mods and high res textures (Bethesda or 2k) as they eat up a lot, I have a i5 2500k, GTX 570 and 4GB of RAM and using mods, HD textures and performance SSAO I need to use high settings instead of ultra and I try to avoid the Rift because I get stutter/freezes/CTDs around the area.

Is there some way to make project reality not make nights and dungeons so dark you cant see a damn thing? Torch and light spells barely dent the darkness at all and it makes doing anything at night impossible. I really like project reality but this is one aspect of it that I hate.

How did you install it? On the nexus mod page it says it has 3 brightness settings each for Nights, Interiors and Dungeons.

If you used Nexus mod manager then you can choose the options at install. You'd need to remove it via NMM and reinstall to see the options again. If you installed manually then you just have to find each setting in the sub folders and use those .esps to overwrite the default. If you used the Steam thing then I have no idea.

I have the same problem with COT.

Here are the level of darkness that you can choose. Level 3 is still too dark for me

If you look sat the official thread for CoT it's rife with people complaining about the nights being too dark. The last few pages have some links and discussion if you want to try those out to see if they work.

I use Realistic Lighting with Customisation instead and through turning off Extreme Weather and rolling with Brighter Nights and Brighter Dungeons as well I finally got it close to what I was looking for in the first place.

YMMV with both those options. You could go into brightness and .ini tweaks but I don't like those methods. If the mod is too dark I remove it. Someone else might have some input.

I've been experiencing a little annoyance lately. I'm using a decent sized list of mods, so I guess it could be caused by any one of them or maybe it's an issue with the game itself or maybe the latest driver I'm using. When I'm traveling through the wilds on horseback, I occasionally I'll get flickers and flashes of what appear to be textures or polygons, right in front of the camera. Only in the wilds, never indoors or in cities. I'm convinced its not some kind of hardware overheating issue or anything like that. I haven't experienced any artifacts in other games and Skyrim doesn't really raise the temperature of my card as much as some other more demanding perfectly functioning games. Anyone else have similar experiences? Troubleshooting each and every one of my installed mods would take an eternity.

Edit: Here is my list of currently installed mods:

3O0xL.png

The W.A.T.E.R. mod is installed but it doesn't show the check mark unless I install every module, apparently.

Since it's in the "wilds" I could imagine it might be your Distant terrain mod. In general, I'd recommend disabling all your environment mods and then enable one of them each at a time to test which of them is causing the issue.

Are you using any ENB? If yes, try disabling it and see if the issue still pops up.

So I just reinstalled Skyrim and added a whole lotta mods (some of 'em I never tried before).

Anybody know what could be causing this? Happens when I dive into water and disappears once my head is above water level.

These are my mods/plugins:

I installed Jasmin ENB manually so that's why it's not checked on the screenshot.

Some ENBs do that but not all. That's one of the reasons I don't really use them.

So my save is gone for my 150hr thief archer (steamcloud fail?). Anyways I was thinking of making a destruction mage, is magic really underpowered in this game? From when I tried it I felt as though the mana cost was extremely high compared to the damage output.

Also since this is a mod discussion is there any mods that are mandatory from a game play standpoint? My first play through was vanilla and I loved it. I am just wondering if there are any key improvements. I am not to worried about graphics being improved.

What are the best mods out atm? Im looking for stuff similar to things like MMM, OOO, Morroblivion, TOTO, and others. Things that dramatically add or change the game. I noticed that the steam workshop doesn't have any big mods.(or at least ones that I can find)

Well Skyrim is now the most beautiful game I've ever played, (And I'm still running at 60FPS!) so time for gameplay enhancements. What're the best mods for combat and magic enhancement guys? Also wouldn't mind something that enhances the gathering of materials for smithing/crafting. Sounds mods are welcome too.

Check out SkyRe or ACE. I use ACE because it's compatible with a lot more stuff. If you want to just grab one mod and go, use SkyRe. There's one called Requiem that has a thread that was made recently, but I have no experience with it. I use Duel for combat enhancement, Path of Shadows for Stealth, Dance of Death for finishing moves.

Those mods look like exactly what I'm looking for, thanks. Still need a magic mod though.

The biggest problem with a lot of the overhauls like SkyRE is that they don't play well new spells added to the game. That being said Apocalypse Spell Package adds a ton of unique and useful spells to the game that might be worth taking a look. There's also Phenderix Magic Evolved which adds something like 250 spells to the game, but a lot of them are pallet swaps of each other and I personally feel are poorly animated. That could have changed since the last time I used it.

Btw just a little heads up. Mods like Realistic Lighting, Realistic Colors and Real Nights and Climates of Tamriel don't usually mesh well with ENB configurations, there are some like "The Wilds ENB" that has a compatible version with COT and you can use RCRN for example setting it's .dll as a proxy in the enbseries.ini but it's pretty much guaranteed to mess up things/look really dark.

The most egregious effect of an ENB is the Ambient Occlusion - if set too high, the fog in Skyrim won't be able to sufficiently hide far-away landscape. By the way, the "final" version of Jasmin has a modded Realistic Lighting.esp that takes Climates of Tamriel into account (from my experience), as long as you alter the AO values.

Will The Wilds ENB (or any ENB really) melt my machine? I'm running CoT and don't want to give that up.

You should definitely disable DOF and SSAO in the enbseries.ini file. Took me from 20-30 FPS to 50-60 FPS.
The Wilds has DOF enabled by default I think.

What kind of FPS are you okay with? With that set up you will probably sit around 30 with everything cranked up and HD textures.

When you say HD textures, is that the Skyrim HD - 2K Textures off the Nexus? I've got HD textures here and there, but not a complete overhaul like that mod. The DLC provided by Bethesda? How much HD are we talking about, I guess is my question. Also, would following the post quoted below help with the FPS or would it be minor with all the HD textures?

Did this and it runs smooth as butter.

So I'm building a new PC, and I can finally take in the full skyrim modded experience.

I'm going from

Q9450 2.6 GHz (Overclocked to 3.2 GHz)
4GB of RAM
AMD 6950

to

i7 3770K (I'm going to be overclocking it into the 4.0+ GHz range)
Gigabyte GTX 670
16 GB of RAM

Oh yeah!

So I remember there being posts on here from Reddit with recommended mods, but I can't find them anymore and it's kind of hard to find stuff like that on Reddit after it gets old. Anyone know where they are?

I'm new to this ENB and Injection stuff and it was kind of the reason why I tried an Nvidia card this time.

That's a pretty hefty list of mods.

The Bethesda HD texture pack is pretty good, 2K textures has better quality but I like to stick to Bethesda's vision of the art style of the game. I think you can actually use both and they complement each other though.

I recommend you use the ENB Customizer and try different settings in-game. You can actually set the SSAO value to low and uncheck indirect lighting so it will steal only a couple of FPS' and still get the effect.

EDIT- I'm not sure if the customizer works well with the latest incarnations of the ENB series, so use it at your discretion, I still use it with 117 and works well enough.

ENB isn't really a mod its kind of like filters. I'm not sure what kind of mods you're looking for, but if its gameplay enhancements http://skyrimgems.com/ has collected the vast majority of the best ones.

Edit: Beaten by like 10mins I didn't bother to check this page.

For some reason newer ENBs don't work for me, the ones where you have some external window open when playing Skyrim. Maybe it doesn't really jive with Skyrim Mod Organizer, which I can recommend to you all. Makes modding much less of a hassle as the mods do not install in the Skyrim's data folder.

I have the DLC packs already, would the 2K textures kill my performance? I posted my specs last page towards the bottom.
