In the podcast it was mentioned that Vinny found the story and characterization pretty good, and that was the main reason of why Scoops wanted to try it.

As for me, I own it, but I can't get over how it feels. All the enemies are just way too bullet-spongy.

The "gameplay" is better than slightly above average.
Didn't Brad already tell you that Skyrim was different because they didn't get the PS3 version until after release?
But speaking of games with performance problems (though not game-breaking, compared to FC3) ...
Dismantling the robots is what made the shooting above average, Binary Domain really is a pretty cool game!
He'd rather make up bullshit to trash his fellow game reviewers than just accept being in the minority, so it's not surprising he would go that route to discredit regular people who pointed out all the real issues and problems with ME3 that he didn't mention in his review.
Hope may be the sharp edge of a knife, but that guy is just a liar.

It is more than blowing up robot limbs for coolness. Blowing up limbs is tactically relevant to the game.
I had little use for the voice orders. Seems like a tacked on thing the game didn't use to its full effect. (Thinking it over, there isn't a lot of room for allies to apply special tactics that are not built neatly into the game already, e.g. reviving)

The shooting/limb stuff in Binary Domain is great (and I love the "low cover", it's a nice touch that breaks up the chest high walls) but the weightless movement and useless voice mechanics really didn't do it for me. Still a really fun game, totally worth playing. Probably one of my favorites this year.
yea, he tweeted he was going for unemployment after the whole thing went down. kinda sucks that he wasn't taken into GB or got a job back at Gamespot. he wrote pretty good guides for GS way back.

Binary Domain was definitely one of the better TPS games to come out in the last few years. I actually liked the characters, the ways you could influence their opinion on you outside of dialogue was interesting at times, and the combat is just fun. It gave me a greater appreciation of robots as a type of enemy, you can do so much with them that you just don't see in a lot of games. I particularly enjoyed the limb damage because you can just straight up shoot off the arm they're holding their weapon with, or have them come crawling at you once you take out a leg. Dan's gun is also pretty ridiculous once it's fully upgraded, you just chew through things.

I'm close to saying this seriously. Though I don't think that is a problem with movement necessarily. The game does have a dodge which you can upgrade and it is not like it is hard to make space between you and your enemies with a handy sprint.
I was very mobile in the game, since headshots allowed me to ignore cover most of the time. Melee is also quite strong. (Also this game has the best riot shield.)

There's a mission where you're heading for the dam or flood control gates or something, there's this giant robot stingray thing and you're constantly being harassed by these smaller flying robots, and occasionally the stingray will launch guided missiles at you. I spent most of that battle stuck on catwalk ledges or being hit by missiles because I kept getting stuck on catwalk ledges.

Big Bo for character i want to party with
binary domain has a lot of wasted mechanics like the tactical stuff and the weapon leveling up and the partners never being worth that much and the boss battles have the problem of being knocked over constantly and not being well designed, yet it gets the fundamentals of the shooting, enemy design and level design so right it's great. plus it adds some really entertaining characters like big boi and cain, a nice setting and a stupid plot you can enjoy ironically. it's probably my favourite shooter of the year.

Ok, yeah, if you think Spec Ops has good shooting Binary Domain will feel like a simulator.
It also has a better story :3

That boss in a pain, but a lot of the trouble is alleviated by using the turret I think. I don't know if you were trying to roll in the direction of the ledges or what, but I think the best way to avoid missiles is to just sprint or shoot them down.
My problem with some boss battles (particularly the Tsar Runner) is that they last too long.

Nope. It has better characterization and chemistry between characters, but the story did get stupid at points.

Possible best bombcast ever. This has been a pretty goddamn productive week for almost all of them.
Maybe Vinny will come out of nowhere and talk about something completely unexpected like Xenoblade or an eastern Europeon sim.
the only boss that fucked me over was the gorilla robot. everyone else was doable.
Oh yeah Tsar Runner goes for way too long for a god damned turret sequence

Sounds like next week is when they'll be doing all their GOTY stuff. Obviously none of it will go up for a few more weeks, though.

That (if we are talking about the final battle, the previous one was fine) and Tsar Runner are the two moments where Binary Domain has a quite a problem with boss length. In general though, they range from fine to having a pinch too much health. For frame of reference my recent playthrough was the No Mercy setting, though I remember those two bosses still being a problem on my original "hard" run.
EDIT: Speaking of which, it is kind of hard to tell the difference between "hard" and No Mercy once you get a bunch of upgrades. I wonder if it feels that way with lower difficulties.
I don't hate Arthur the way many people do, but it's clear he can't argue or discuss things without immediately running in circles. Judging by the last Rebel.FM he seems to have developed a massive persecution complex regarding that game as well. He says some pretty dumb stuff there that I'm surprised self-awareness hasn't slapped back into his face like a rubber band as soon as they fell out of his mouth. First he pulls "vocal minority", shortly after he said he's seen hundreds of comments on the issue or some such. Then he flat out says that he can't discuss it any more because he can't help himself but reflexively respond that people who've had problems with it are wrong. Painful to listen to.
He needs to stop reading comments sections ASAP. It's doing a number on him.
I'm pretty sure Brad mentioned him having to play a bunch of games before the 12th - seems like Tuesday is when they begin recording the GOTY deliberations.

Well it at least seems like there will be a decent and varied representation of games this year, I can't think of too many glaring omissions from their collective "games played" list.
Regarding Binary Domain, I found the combat was incredibly boring up until about 3/4 of the way through where I either upgraded my guy so much or I just worked out how to play the game. I forget if BD had an upgrade system. I think it did. But by the end I was just destroying robots. Just fucking blowing them away, and it was great.
There's certainly a lot to dislike about Binary Domain. But in the end I thought that the combat wasn't one of those things. Or the characters / voice acting.

But I enjoyed the weird pseudo-anime vibe of that game's story, despite loathing anime stories and tropes. It was a fun, stupid, awesome game and I'm glad I played it.

Syndicate has fantastic pure shooting although everything else about that game is pretty uninteresting. Sleepy Dogs is an adventure and a half, although goes on for a bit too long and the fighting, especially gun battles, become really quite tedious by the end. Hotline Miami is goddamn fantastic. Binary Domain is, well, super dumb, but in the best ways possible.
So, I'd probably go Hotline Miami to Binary Domain to Sleepy Dogs.

you had to get 100% friendship or whatever with every character to get the 'perfect' ending. I didn't know that going in, and why on earth would I let that British lady be in my party when I can have way better characters with bigger guns and THAT WAS SWEEEEET. So because of that my robot friend didn't dues ex machina at the end but everything still worked out in the end. I think Big Bo died. That's fine, I don't mind characters dying because it kind of makes them more interesting to think about in retrospect.

they should contact him to freelance any new Dark Souls stuff. can't rely on anyone else to do it.
