In your opinion, the franchises that went down hill this gen?

The shorter list would be the ones that didn't go down hill

Even franchises like MGS, Zelda and GTA which delivered good games could be considered to have slipped from last gen efforts

Gaming is hardly limited to franchises that existed before this gen. I enjoy playing games too, but I can still point franchises that, in my opinion, had very disappointing entries this console cycle. Metroid has been the most disappointing, personally.
Yep. Still all sorts of amazing games coming out, but many of them are just new IPs or indie titles.

That's the one good thing, there are just A LOT of games to pick and choose from right now. If the latest mainstream AAA sequel doesn't tickle your fancy, there is certainly something else out there for you to play.

The most obvious ones to me are Splinter Cell and Hitman and Mass Effect, but I'm sure there are many others I could pick one.

Yep, Elder Scrolls.

Oblivion, while dated now, I thought was pretty amazing when it came out.

Skyrim? I thought it was the bees knees. Nothing to really complain about aside from some repetitive quests. I thought the gameplay did a good enough job as a whole.

Morrowind is still my favorite game of all time. The atmosphere is unmatched. But it's one of those right place, right time kind of things. It's unfair to ask them to recapture something like that.

Video games are more streamlined now. That's just the reality. The old games are still there for us to play.

In truth I was thinking more about Skyrim than Oblivion. Forgot Oblivion kind of came out at the start of the gen. Honestly, if they took the world, quests, NPCs, dialog of Morrowind and put it in the engine of Skyrim (I know there are lots of fan projects) it would be ultimately better for the both of them.

What's with all the Gran Turismo mentions?

GT5 is absolutely the best in the series, better visuals and by better I mean fucking fantastic, better physics (best on console sims imo), more cars and more tracks. Then you have the new additions such as kart racing, nascar, special events which are great, a course generator, day night cycle, weather, and a really good online mode. The series just gets better with each game, the only thing I didn't like was the constant loading and the load times, but patchs helped eradicate some of that. And the GT5 home page is much better than the home screen in GT4.
They couldn't even get damage working properly. From once the genre leader, they have fallen well behind the pack

You're giving me a raging hard on. Please stop.

Has anyone mentioned Final Fantasy yet?

In my opinion, MGS, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil all got worse. These were my core franchises last gen. Some of my favorite games ever and some of the best ever made.

When I first bought my PS3 in 2008 I thought I'd be buying it to enjoy certain classics like MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, GTAIV, etc. Late 2012 and the gems I've played are Arkham Asylum/City, Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim. I guess it worked out in the end because I've broadened my horizons. And I still haven't played any of the Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed games, so I'm sure I'll enjoy some of those. It's just weird that this gen franchises that were "sure things" for the longest time failed to impress me. Especially Final Fantasy. IV-XII (not including XI because I didn't play it) is just a great run of consistently strong games across multiple generations. Now I look at Lightning Returns and shake my head.

I still have hope for MGS5 and GTA5 though.

Nothing compares to Wave Race. It went from a real game - one that I put a ton of time into over the prior 2 generations - to a crappy Wii Sports minigame.

Same thing with F-Zero, if you count the Nintendo Land minigame as 'this gen'.

You guys are crazy, RE5 and RE6 are two amazing games. People love to hate on them but they're fun.

Anyhosers, my answer would probably be Splinter Cell. The old gen games were good, but man Conviction was a stinker and now Blacklist looks to be equally dudebro.

Resident Evil
Splinter Cell
Hitman
Assassin's Creed
Mass Effect
Dragon Age

And a bunch more I'm sure

A bunch of those franchises are new IPs! Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and Dragon Age didnt come out tell this gen.

Only one franchise really needs to be named here.

FINAL FANTASY

SE has a whole has gone to shit.

I think moreso than Final Fantasy, it's just Square Enix as a company. At least for games they develop. I guess it's good they got Eidos so they can still have some decent franchises tied to them.

Square Enix and Eidos seemed like such a weird pairing that ended up working out really well for both parties.

Sadly I can't post screens, but level 5 has done a fine job with hd towns in rpgs this gen, as have many other devs both from the west and east.

I don't remember who made that quote but id be surprised if anyone did not think that line was bullshit then, and its been proven wrong many times. Square might not be able to do them, but they can't seem to make good games anymore either.

It was Kitase and he said that as an excuse for FFVII Remake not being developed.

Everyone laughed.

Splinter Cell. I don't know. My mind can't grasp the stupidity that is required to turn one of the greatest franchises last gen into the clusterfuck that is today. How is that possible, I just don't get it. The same goes for Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six probably, basically all Tom Clancy games.

Another one is Star Wars. What we had last gen:

- KotOR I
- KotOR II
- Jedi Knight II
- Rogue Squadron III
- Battlefront I and II

The amount of depth, great gameplay and fun those games delievered.

What do we have this gen?

- shitty Force Unleashed
- Star Wars LEGO
- Star Wars Kinect

smh.

Or perhaps they have a different opinion than yours. Especially since that person's favorite Pokemon game is Platinum.

Nah, I'm not so short-sighted as to deny someone's personal preference, but Gens IV & V (including HG/SS) are all part of the same gaming "Gen", am I right? Preferring Platinum over the next mainline installment is hardly an indication that Pokemon is suffering some sort of decline. Platinum was my favorite Pokemon game, too.

My post was mainly directed at people who think R/B/Y are somehow superior to their sequels by virtue of being the "first". All of this is subjective, sure, but it's hard for me to comprehend how anyone could feel Pokemon was experiencing anything other than a golden age of quality.

Battlefield
Call of Duty (as far as I'm concerned, 3 was the apex, then the series took a nosedive with Modern Warfare)
Medal of Honor

Battlefield Modern Combat to BFBC2 and BF3

MC was much more of a Battlefield game than BC2 and BF3 (and BC1, for that matter).

Halo for sure, each one that has been released has made me less and less interested in the franchise.

Splinter Cell, I loved Double Agent's multiplayer because it was much faster and not as cluttered with gadgets, but they removed Co-op and the Single player was pretty lame. I didn't play Conviction because it didn't even look like a Splinter Cell game.

Grand Theft Auto, the best thing about GTAIV was the Fusion Jazz station and the Multiplayer.

Thank god for Souls games and downloadable games, so many franchises tanked this gen.

Reminds me of Pilotwings. I haven't played the 3DS one, but I don't think it's what people clamored for.

Pretty much.

I remember you, you used to post in the Battlfield UK forum, right? Shame that they've closed it. My nick there was (which is my gamertag).

Final Fantasy.

In playing 4 now on my phone and its insane how much better it is in everything then 13.

Hope SE gets their mojo back.

Sengoku Basara was better than ever on PS3 imo.

and Devil May Cry was doing ok until this latest one

(in response to the guy asking if franchises got better)

I don't really have alot of attachment to franchises as a whole though.

Final Fantasy and Resident Evil mostly. Capcom and Square-Enix have completely lost focus when it comes to those franchises and it doesn't look like it'll change in the future.

Of the big Nintendo franchises Metroid has had to suffer most thanks to Other M. Zelda feels a bit stagnant and in sone ways misguided but nothing that couldn't be fixed easily. Skyward Sword was a few changes away from being a god-tier Zelda.

Resident Evil - easily the biggest offender along with Diablo. the dropoffs in quality are legendary.
Diablo
Rainbow Six - really went downhill starting with Lockdown
Halo - 3 was aight, Reach and 4 left a lot to be desired
Madden - just by simple fact that they release the same game every year for $60, have online codes, and squeeze money with stat boosts yet can't make AI worth a fuck.

Fun...or literally game changing a la RE4. Capcom fucked up.

SSX was a pretty massive ball-drop. That could have been something really special.

I loved RE5 but RE6 was a huge disappointment. Nobody is "loving to hate" on these games. There are legit problems with them, especially RE6.

At least we did get a good RE game this year with Revelations. :P

Ah, so another 'This Gen Sucks' thread...Yeah, I guess it was time for another.

Splinter Cell is the only franchise I can think of. Double Agent was OK at best, and I didn't care to pick up Conviction. I really enjoyed SC games last gen.

Halo, GTA, Madden/NCAA Football, NBA 2k, GoW, Zelda, and Mario all had amazing games this gen. I even enjoyed RE5 a ton, as well.

Ghost Recon - sure, AW was a fun sidestep, but I expected they'd return to the style of the much more satisfying classic ones. Nope. Now its just a bland TPS.

Splinter Cell - it would be pretty much impossible to top CT, but after playing DA and seeing Conviction/Blacklist..... ugh.

Rainbow Six - started going downhill at the end of last gen. Never recovered and now seems to have disappeared. For the best IMO.

Battlefield - bf3 was such a disappointment after bf2. Glad I didn't get it after the alpha.

Final Fantasy for me. I loved every game up to FFX, but they have fallen so far since then. I saw XIII-2 on sale for $20 the other day and decided to pass on it since XIII was so bad.

Those that went down:
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Devil May Cry
Final Fantasy
Dragon Quest
2D-Mario
Metroid
Ghost Recon
Splinter Cell
SSX
Grand Theft Auto
Diablo
Tony Hawk

Those that went up:
Ratchet and Clank
3D-Mario
Elder Scrolls
Killzone
Call of Duty

Those that stayed constant:
Metal Gear
Halo
Zelda

Resident Evil
Final Fantasy
Silent Hill
Devil May Cry

Probably four of the biggest on the Japanese side of things. The sad part is that many of these franchises/IP used to DEFINE hardware like the PS2. Now they are more like husks of their former selves. I'll admit that "husk" comment applies a lot more to RE and SH than it does to DMC or Final Fantasy.

SSX
Red Faction
Tony Hawk
Call of Duty

Only a couple of SSX games and neither of them were really great. Blur had great visuals, a nice art style ingame and absolutely beautiful music, but it was really constrained by the Wii's hardware. SSX 2012 ditched head to head multiplayer and had worse music, but beautiful graphics and great post release support. The death pits murdered the game's chances at really hitting it big with the EA sports audience imo. Call of Duty has just been milked to death. My God... I can't keep up with that shit.

Other M is the biggest offender for me. Before it came out I'd have considered it impossibly bad. An incredible miscalculation on every level. What were they thinking. I still find it hard to process.

I need a drink. Damn.
