So the vita had a very strong few months...was that it?

Would you consider these a strong few months?

Relatively speaking? Yeah, definitely. With the exception of CoD (which I haven't played) these were all strong titles that made me glad to own a vita.

The use of "very" in my thread title might be unnecessary, but I didn't think about it too much.

Luigis mansion 2, monster hunter 3 ultimate, castlevania lords of shadow mirror of fate, fire emblem awakening, rune factory iv, smt: soul hackers, animal crossing New leaf, etc 3ds has quite a bit coming next year.

monster hunter 3 ultimate and smt: soul hackers are ports, aren't they?

If you're feeling offended or persecuted by the existence of this thread and you want to make some snarky comment about people calling the Vita doomed, I suggest you reconsider. Those sorts of posts are noncontributory and completely pointless. Either join the discussion or don't.

MH3U is more of an enhanced port.

Also Castlevania and Rune Factory being on that list is... questionable, to say the least. HarmoKnight should take the place of both.

But even then I don't feel it's a massive gap between the two. It seems like there is still a lot of room for many more games to be announced for both systems.

There's still some games coming down the pipe that I want. And there are some games I have yet to get.

DOA5+ and Soul Sacrifice are some I'm keen on.

I think they both have some great games coming out, and I welcome ports because if we didn't have multiplatform games these consoles sure would be boring. I much prefer the Vita lineup myself, but they're different enough that I could see peoples' opinions different on that.

I want games that I can't play elsewhere, and I can't tell what direction Sony's going with it. If it's about the 'console experience on the go' or if it's trying to be it's own thing.

I don't commute or anything, so I look to the Vita solely for having games I want to play that I can't play elsewhere. I can play Sly elsewhere, I can play EDF elsewhere. I have no interest in Soul Sacrifice on a personal level, so I just don't see a lot. And I'm not much of a fan of the real small budget, indie platformer mixbag type stuff, so that's got no appeal to me.

The question is asking me, so I know I'm biased, but they need to announce something unique to make me care about it.
The biggest game this holiday for the 3DS was a DS game, pretty abysmall overall year for 3DS. Whereas Vita had quality games of almost every genre, from ports to original games.

The biggest game this holiday for the Vita had to be given away with Vita systems

Soul Sacrifice?

I went and watched the trailer for that game and was instantly turned off by the ugly visuals and "been there done that" vibe of yet another Japanese Monster Hunter styled 3rd person action game.

It also doesn't seem like it is suited for portable gaming. What makes it better suited for portable systems?

Tearaway is the biggest 2013 Vita game I am interested in, but they seem to be pushing the backtouch feature (which I hate) a bit too much for my comfort. :(

This "I wouldn't consider that a few strong months" stuff is bullshit. The bottom line is the system had a great fucking year. It may have been a bit loaded into the start and the finish, but it was still a fucking great year.

Mortal Kombat
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Wipeout 2048
Persona 4 Golden
Ragnarok Odyssey
Assassin's Creed Lib
Need for Speed
LittleBigPlanet
PlayStation All Stars
Gravity Rush
Uncharted
Jet Set Radio
Street Fighter X Tekken
Disgea 3
Sine Mora
Sound Shapes
Mod Nation Racers
Mutant Blobs Attack
Virtue's Last Reward
Silent Hill Book of Memories
Lumines
BlazBlue
Call of Duty (fuck you, its fun and gets undue shit)
Rayman Origins
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
MLB 12 The Show

All of those are games that either reviewed well or in the case of COD, have a dedicated fan base. Not to mention that a few of the best ones are fucking FREE to PS Plus users.

All the backward compatibility with PSP games.
Remote play of Ico/Shadow of the Collosus (if you haven't played those yet, this is sweet)

I think its pretty hard to shit on the Vita after 10 months like that. Not too bad at all. If you want to insist there's nothing on the system that interests you, then take a walk out of this thread and go buy a fucking DS Lite.

The Vita only has games that are either:

1. Straight or enhanced port of console games.

2. Side games that feel lesser to the console version

Where're the games that feel it was made for the system? Gravity Rush, Sound Shapes, Lumines… that's all I could think of.

It is if you bought the system for what you expected it to be: the PSP2. New IPs on Sony's handhelds? Please, you're foolin' yourself.

ugh I feel that the vita had as many if not more new Ips than the 3ds. It definitely had more first party new IPs for sure. Unless this is sarcasm of course?

edit: just saw the comments above. I'm wasting my time in this thread

Have you watched any of the demo videos?

From what I've seen the game has bite sized chapters where you, and your friends, join up against monsters and bosses.

It seems very "pick up and play" which is certainly suited for portable play.

The game also is quite different from Monster Hunter, so I don't see how anyone could really call it "been there, done that", especially with the whole sacrifice system in place.

what game is that? Pokemon?

the 3DS had Resident Evil, Kid Icarus, Theatrhythm, Kingdom Hearts 3D, NSMB2, Professor Layton, and Paper Mario. even if you want to say this is a worse year than the Vita had (which is highly debatable), it's far from "abysmal"

Wasn't the discussion about the last few months, though?

It cost the exact same price to buy a Wifi Vita and a Wifi Vita with COD or AC. How is that not being given away?

Holiday bundles are a norm in the holidays. Microsoft is "giving away" Skyrim and Forza 4, Nintendo with Mario Kart and Mario 3dland, Sony AC3/Uncharted/Infamous, etc. . .

And how is that NOT like Monster Hunter or PSO?

Excellent thread, thanks.

Persona 4 Golden, Assassin's Creed Liberation, CoD Declassified (yeah, yeah), LBP Vita, a strong NFS: Most Wanted port...it's actually been a great time to be a vita owner these past few months leading up to Christmas.

But what's next? Besides Soul Sacrifice and MLB 13 I can't think of anything coming out next year, and that doesn't bode well at all. Are we seeing the beginning of the end?

I really hope not. I think it's a great system, and I probably played it more than any other this year.

No need to fear for your vita's life, plenty of title announcements you seem to have missed, check the post I quoted - my other mains ones are Killzone Mercenaries, Sly Cooper 4, Guacamelee and Tearaway for now, but I'm expecting some new announcements and surprises as well.

Also do consider Stranger's Wrath Vita, PSASBR and S&S Racing Transformed if you haven't already, easy recommendations. I'd be surprised if you didn't have decent backlog though.

Skyrim and Forza 4 came out last year. Mario Kart came out much earlier this year, and 3D Land came out last year. Same for all those PS3 games. These games and their bundles came out at the same day, so they're convinced they can't even get the day 1 sales on them.

What would you consider a strong lineup?

I get that Vita doesn't have a mainstream lineup, but the content that has been released (niche as it may be) is excellent for the core gamer.

I don't have some fantasy lineup I can provide you with, unfortunately. I can say that the actual Vita lineup this holiday was anything but "strong".

I'm hoping for a cross-controller port of Rayman Legends, as well as whatever is coming next from Sony's PSV studios: Bend, Siren, and Tarsier (Uncharted, Gravity Daze, and LBP)

I bought an ac3 vita was going to sell it.

Opened it.

Loving it. Great little system. Playstation plus deals and free games is the cherry on top.

AC3 came out November.

Point of the thread really isn't to discuss the merits of the Vita to this point, but to ask if the future is indeed bleak.

Games put out even now were taking advantage of the relative newness of the system, but next year is all about staying power.

3DS had a black friday bundle in 2011 with Mario 3D Land. It had just come out. PS3 in 2011 had a bundle with R&C: All 4 One. It had come out within a month of the bundle.

It's got software coming from 3rd parties, Sony still plans on selling it and supporting it, etc. . . not really much to argue if we're talking strictly next year.

Next year we have Soul Sacrifice, Atelier Meruru, DOA5, NGS2, Tearaway, God Eater 2, EDF3 to name a few.

So yes, next year vita looks better than this year. I can't wait.

I don't see how anyone can view the future as anything but bleak. Japanese support for the system is dying as the system has been unable to reach a viable level of sales.

Sony has attempted to prop up the system by porting PSN and PS3 games to the Vita, but this was the last wave of PS3 games before the transition to the next system. Not really sure why any studio would invest money into making games for a platform that simply isn't selling....

Do you see those games selling to anything other than a small niche of gamers though?

The Vita had an AMAZING year in terms of software (obviously not sales) considering it was launch-year.

The ground trembles... I can hear DCharlie stamping here now...

You know what GAF was REALLY missing but i'm glad the drought was broken?!

A VITA DOOMED thread!!!!

Man... it takes me right back to 20 minutes ago! ;)

I think we are at the point where people who have Vita's realise the situation - that the machine is -not- appealing to the masses, that the games aren't hitting DAT DEMOGRAFIQUE etc and that the machine may well be in danger but these threads are starting to fill up with the same people on the LOL DOOM! side repeating the same points, the same concern trolls, the same "#fingerwag AND SONY AND THIS AND THAT AND THEY DID THIS WRONG AND..."

I think Vita owners get it by now and another thread like this does nowt other than to regurgitate the same shite.

I do, however, find it hilarious that i'm now , apparently, the poster boy for Sony given my absolute undoubted history on GAF since 2000 has been a dyed in the wool Sony Hater!

I think it's safe to say that delicate lambs will , at some point, consider me a troll no matter which particular twat flag they've decided to stapple their insecurity to.

They do need to open the wallet and get a few big names for the next few years.

Seems like some interesting indy stuff will be on it but they need the big brands to get attention and keep the train rolling.

GTA seems like something they should try and get. It moved a few PSP's. maybe try get a COD again but try harder to get activision to make it.

I would say Final Fantasy type zero for vita would be a good investment but I guess SCEA dont give a shit. If it was going to happen it would have by now. A shame really.

And yeah Monster Hunter....
