LTTP: Dark Souls (PS3)

sens fortress feels like a MASSIVE troll area though. cheap traps everywhere, armored suits that LOOK like silver knights all over the place without there e actually being any, that damn mimic...the list is endless

Sen's Fortress shows off everything I love about Dark Souls: merciless, but when you master it, god what a great feeling.

I also have a soft spot for Blighttown (not the frame rate issues, but the difficulty).

I may have...issues. Is there an equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome for Lordran?

lol i totally thought this was the LTTP demons souls thread

can tell the difference, one starts with about how amazing it was to complete it

the other is about how awful it is adjusting to the beginning of 1-1 and 1-2

No, Blighttown is a fantastically designed, incredibly nerve-wracking area that's really fun to play when the framerate isn't terrible. Doing just that on the PC version only reinforced this conclusion.

Sens fortress is the best Indianna Jones game never made. I got a massive laugh when I started running from those boulders.

whelp... just made it to Blighttown.

Didn't get far.

Sniped the first enemy I saw (fat guy with a big club) with my longbow and about 10 arrows. Moved a little further, saw two more, drew one out, and just got owned. I made the critical mistake of engaging him on a bridge/pathway. Nowhere to go. One crack of his club completely destroyed my stamina & half of my health, even when blocking, and the next quick strike did me in.
Fock.

Oh, on top of that I got cursed in the Depths by one of those fucking big-eyed lizards, so half of my health bar is already gone.
I guess this doesn't just wear off? :/
I'm hoping that prism item is easy to come by, because I don't see myself going to Anor Londo (which in-game it mentioned there was a healer there) any time soon.

Blighttown you can evade the fat guys if you like they are easy to run away from.

CURSE: Try this

new Londo, not anor Londo. and yeah, you have no shot of getting to that guy. the guy that sells the curse removal item is the same one that appears after you ring the bell after the gargoyle fight. just get it taken care of.

It's amazing listening to people talk about how they get stuck at certain areas or rage quit at guys like O&S, knowing someday soon those challenges will seem so simple to them. I know those feelings because to varying degrees I was the same at several points during the game, but can now wreck everything on forcibly limited builds with little difficulty.

This game truly forces you to get better, and that's awesome. Guys complaining about certain areas; you'll get it eventually. Trust me. I died like nine billion times to Bell Gargoyle on my very first run and now I remember that and laugh.

Dark Souls is the only game I've played this generation that I'll never get tired of. I'm SL 122 with 117 hours put in and I already can't wait to do a new game+. I just pray From doesn't fuck it up with Dark Souls 2.

Is PS3 the preferable platform for this? (excluding PC)

I've got both, though only got the Xbox version recently. PS3 is the better option - higher populations & better frame rate in places like Blighttown. That doesn't mean the Xbox version is bad, I'm having a blast with this new playthrough.

This game gets even better once you know the ropes. You can get to Anor Londo in less than 2 hours if you know what you're doing. I got my Balder Side Sword and Pharis Bow to +10 before Anor Londo too. I felt invincible. Knowledge is fucking power in this game. Ornstein and Smough are still hard as FUCK though. I always dread that fight.

This game is the opposite of fun

If Dark Souls isn't fun, what is fun?

Ok got the drake sword, proceeded to shove it up a metal boars ass took his helm, calling it a night. -_-
Ok got the Knight's sheild, it seems heavy and slow.
What is a better beginner shield and where do I get it?
Also that damn boar's tusk helm seems to slow me down :P

had a great run through a lot of Blighttown. Had some epic 'comeback' moments against those lanky-armed shitheads in there.

Found a bonfire. Lit it, but didn't rest, as I had almost full health, 9 estus flasks and didn't want to respawn all of those jerks.

Fought one of those little red fire-breathing dogs. Got sloppy, didn't defend to the best of my skills, and assumed a strong attack was the finishing blow. Let my guard down and the bastard killed me.

Found out the hard way that just lighting a bonfire isn't enough. By not resting at it I didn't respawn at it.
All the way back at Firelink Shrine, less about 7k souls.

FUCK!

Soul-crushing Dark Souls moment. I couldn't even get mad. I just let out a deep sigh.
It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to go through the Depths. Hate that place.

You don't HAVE to go through the Depths, ya know? Do you have the Master Key?

Well, aside from that, the shortcut in the depths that takes you from outside the Giant Rat room to the guy selling stuff makes going through it tons easier as it is. If he goes the route you're likely inferring, he'll miss going from the first bonfire to the 2nd bonfire in Blighttown which I just recently did for the first time. That was a fun journey I'm glad I didn't avoid. That said though, I didn't find Blighttown as intimidating as people made it out to be and enjoyed finding all the items and stuff scattered around the place.

Dat frame rate tho.

If you have no interest in exploring Blightown - the back way from Valley of Drakes is much, much easier and faster.. Take that route, jump on the water wheel and head straight to Queelag.
But if you take this route, you're missing out on some decent loot (including a fantastic sword).
I really only recommend taking this route if you're on NG+ or if you just want to move past the area quickly.

For the early stages of the game, just about any medium shield that deflects 100% damage is fine. Heavier ones are going to be a problem unless you're a strength build. You can buy a Heater shield from the the merchant in the Undead Burg and upgrade it with the Blacksmith near the chapel for a very small outlay of souls. You'll find better shields to replace it soon enough.

If the boar's helm is slowing you down, I recommend switching back to something lighter. Being able to roll is much more valuable than the small upgrade in defensive capabilities in most situations (unless you end up going with a full-on "fatty" build).

I skipped on the Drake Sword cuz I heard it made you overpowered. I did not get the Master Key as a starting gift cuz I heard it allowed you to bypass a difficult area. I kinda want to do this without crutches. Just rang the first churchbell and from what I've heard, things are going to get very 'Dark Souls' when I go down below to ring the other. Looking forward to it. :)

Yea, I've figured that out recently. Its a big difference going from 50% equip load to 51%. Had the Heater Shield myself but I just bumped up my Endurance enough to where I can hold a Balder Shield, which has higher stability and defense, and keep my 50% equip load. Looks cooler, too.

Ok, that's what I figured you were implying. I say he should stick it out and make his way to the first bonfire again. since I found it so fun Blighttown reminds me of a the Valley of Defilement with a twist of Latria which is probably why I enjoyed it so much.

Also, what sword are you talking about,
falchion?
? I was fortunate to get the
Black Knight Sword
early on and have been using that and mostly don't look at other weapons I've been finding since they're considerably weaker. But, I really, really can't wait to level up
whip
and use that, that thing looks so cool.

Without the Master Key, you can look forward to both the Depths and Blighttown. The Depths is kind of a cool area if you're not claustrophobic. I usually hang out there for a bit to co-op the boss (very easy, and just a short way from the bonfire) and farm humanity. I won't spoil the area for you since you're trying to succeed without crutches, but do take care not to aggro too many enemies at one time. There are some particularly nasty ones in the depths.

I was referring to
the iaito
. Love the move-set of this katana.

More like violated

Damn those black knights!, I wish I could turtle behind my damn shield like they do.

Oooohhh, yeah, I found that one as well. Hadn't equipped it though. I'll throw it on later to see what it looks like.

Got that, too. Too heavy as of now.
Since I'm a melee-heavy knight build, should I start working towards using/boosting that weapon?

I can't really comment on how it would be long term since I'm pretty early in the game as well. Though, I adjusted my stats to use it and it has been a great sword, but it's so overpowering early on. It just blows every other weapon out the water early on except Drake.

Try to make it to the Depths and free Laurentius so you can buy some basic pyromancy. That will help you take out Black Knights.

Magic is for cowards I want to parry and riposte like a god
I am sure I will have to take your advice as I am but a mere cowardly undead :P

I like pyromancy.
I don't like the time it takes my knight to wind up and throw it like he's tossing a fucking knuckleball. :/
Then again, if he was just Hadoukening the thing it would probably take away a lot of the strategy, eh?

Did they ever fix the terrible frame rate problems?

Stop playing the game at that point and never went back.
Why they shipped such a broken game I'll never know.

The only way to play the game with a good framerate is Prepare to Durante Edition. PS3 version is still the definitive PvP experience.

Playing through this on the PC, and went with Pyromancer from the get go this time.
Then promptly bumped up my Faith to 25 to become a Sunbro...

...Why did no one tell me that the Lightning Spear you get as a sign-up gift is absolutely beastly at the beginning?

Well this thread convinced me. Just got the game on 360. Used to have it on PS3 but never really played it. Here we go.

made another run at getting back to the bonfire in Blighttown on my lunch break.

Doing great. Upgraded my primary weapon. Just kicking ass...

Started rushing because my lunch break was coming to an end and got myself killed right before getting to the bonfire. Killed three of those troll-hobo dudes at once, then I got hit with a toxic dart out of nowhere. While I was switching my items to the moss thing to break the toxic effect that godforsaken red dog (again, out of nowhere) flame-puked on me. YOU ARE DEAD.
