These questions are always dumb and if you ever get asked them you should tell the person to write their shit down better. A lot of maths professors couldn't answer them because it becomes irrelevant.

If a math(s) teacher cannot correctly solve the OP's question, s/he should be fired.

I'm a university level no one gives a shit if you can add numbers up or not. If they are writing shit down like in the OP's question they should be fired.

That's nice, but I do care that math teachers understand something as essential as order of operations, even if the problem is poorly written. That was my main point.

I..have no idea what this even means.. No one cares if math teachers can add numbers? Or follow order of operations? And they should be fired if they..write problems down?

University level teacher? So you're a math professor? I'm pretty sure there'll be vastly differentiating opinions on the importance of PEMDAS, but it's so basic that anyone into math should've dealt with the problem numerous times, and as such, it shouldn't be a hindrance.

Many professors might say "it's not what will matter on an exam", as anyone can make silly mistakes with them, but it's not to say that you can completely ignore the order of operations once you're done with "basic shit"

The surface elementary operations are clues to a free all-terrain vehicle that the OP might have hidden East of Zelenokumsk, (44.4° N 44.4 ° E). The lumber was a ruse!

You can write maths so there is very little ambiguity. Thinking about it maybe I just do it subconsciously now, but I never have to think about what order to do stuff in because no one writes anything to catch people out. I definitely never have to think of BODMASS or whatever it is/was when I was taught it.
These stupid questions from facebook or whatever annoy me (more the other one someone linked where everyone thought it was 2 to start) because they are traps that make people think they are good/bad at maths when really it isn't what it's about.

And I still stand by the fact a lot of maths lecturers can't do basic calculations on the board for shit, but that doesn't mean they are awful.

The 48/2(9-3) is definitely something that I wouldn't fault anyone for getting wrong as long as they are capable of seeing why it is wrong. The one in the OP however is so straight forward that there is no excuse for getting it wrong. Yes it's true that once you are at a university level you don't really need to think about order of operations with some PEMDAS rule or whatever, but that's not really because everyone writes everything with a bunch of unnecessary parentheses for clarity(because that is certainly not always the case) but because the order of operations is obvious by then and you don't need to think about it.

This is why I will never ever be good at math. There's all the rules, yeah, but they were never ever explained to me. Apparently for stuff to stick in my head I have to know the WHY of it. So order of operations has apparently been deleted.

Jeez, the content on GAF is becoming more facebook every day. So with this new found tradition i shall post like the teenagers these math posts typically target:

LOL itz 80 newbz

remember in friday when smokey owed big perm 200 dollars and he counted five twenties twice by flipping them around that shit was gangster math.

This thread makes me feel really thick. Maths was always my worst subject at school. I struggle to add the values up on my Cardfight Vanguard cards and I'm in my late 20s XD
