Saw this on Facebook a few days ago. Do people feel superior because they can apply basic mathematical rules learned in third grade?

I do feel superior to any adult who can't do basic math at a 3rd grade level. Are you saying I shouldn't?

nothing wrong with brushing up on basic mathmatics, it can be quite easy to forget the basics, why i occasionally go back and look at sums like this.

20 is the correct answer.

The rules, listed in the Swedish language. Dont know the correct names for all in English. :)

Prioriteringsreglerna

1. Parenteser
2. Multiplikation och division
3. Addition och subtraktion

Order of operations

1. Parentheses
2. Multiplication and division
3. Addition and subtraction

;)

4 × 4 + 4 × 4 + 4 - 4 × 4
(4×4) + (4×4) + 4 - (4×4)
16 + 16 + 4 - 16
(16 + 16 + 4) - 16
36 - 16
20

Are there really (western educated) adult people can't do this?

20

I'm dumb, I kept reading it wrong and got 4, then 20. If I had paper in front of me I'd have gotten it on the first try. /excuses

4 × 4 + 4 × 4 + 4 - 4 × 4
(4×4) + (4×4) + 4 - (4×4)
16 + 16 + 4 - 16
(16 + 16 + 4) - 16
36 - 16
20

Some could have merely forgotten to use order of operations. That's something I often did in the past despite knowing the concepts themselves. Many people just start doing it in the order of the problem.

Shit, maybe not using calculators in schools actually did turn out to be useful.

Nah fuck that shit it was a waste of time.

Excuse me while I simultaneously chastise people for not remembering arbitrary rules and slyly insult the standards of education in the eastern hemisphere.

Going off normal rules, its 20. Is it just a silly question to see if people know the order of operations, or is there some other trick to it?

Also, they should have put in some division, that catches people off guard a lot.

4 × 4 + 4 × 4 + 4 - 4 × 4
(4×4) + (4×4) + 4 - (4×4)
16 + 16 + 4 - 16
(16 + 16 + 4) - 16
36 - 16
20

pffft, yeah, it's not like those easterners are going to learn something as advanced as multiplication.

I was wondering the same thing, what does 'Western' have to do with it? They have different calculation rules in Asia?

??

I'm so hungry right now.

20 w/o reading the thread. I even subtracted the one 4x4 first so I only had to go 4x4+4. AND I am hung over. Process that!

Anyone else automatically go to wolfram alpha without bothering to do it in their head?

Sad I did this but ain't nobody got time for math anymore

Yeah, I did that as well (German efficiency, etc etc..), but I'm just tired rather than being hungover.

Gaf would be awesome if solving calculations like this was a requirement for registering (sort of like a captcha, but with a time limit or something)
