Hideki Kamiya shits all over Kotaku

I understand it's hard for people who have to churn out 834343 arcticles a day for a such 'hard hitting' websites....

I'm not going to single out anyone personally... (though feel free to do it yourself) but I'll echo a lot of the sentiment around here...

Games Journalism isn't SO funny, there actually is a place for fair, balanced and informative opinion and review. But when you become nothing more than a shock-jock on the internet, you've got to wonder if it's worth it for what's paying the bills...

As someone who spent the last 9 of 10 years living in Japan, I could write a book on foreigner "racism". You can call me Debito (extra points if you get that). I was responding to the inferrence that the word gaijin is banned on Japanese tv. It's not lol, it is not at all a taboo word. The use and context is important, but it does not automatically have a derogatory connotation.

I get your reference. The Hot Spring controversy right? But yeah been in Japan 9 years myself and the word Gaijin is frequently used on TV. There is even a subgroup of GaijinTalento. I am called gaijin every day. But have only been offended by it a few times. It's entirely context.

Dude was being racist but not any more that the Kotaku post that expanded a few tweets from one guy as proof that Japanese are ignorant about PC gaming.

jesus christ, gaming journalism is pathetic.
kotaku is easily the worst offender, but gametrailers, polygon, ign, gamespot, eurogamer are awful too (and i'm probably missing other sites i can't remember). we fucking deserve better.

Man Jaffe must be laughing his ass off at the tweet too.

holy shit, jaffe bringing it. man, i'm really glad i only follow neogaf for the new and discussions and giantbomb for video content. these people are a joke.

I'm not saying nobody in here hasn't been a fan of him previously. This is about folks jumping on any and every chance they can to say something bad about Kotaku and praise anyone who says anything bad about them.

I was sarcastic... I agree with you.

Jaffe is 100% is correct. Those journalists are just joke. You can't just write stuff from your ass and create your own definition.

Thank god for Giantbomb.

Based Giantbomb is based. And that journalist who writes for FORBES.
2 of the only true-video gaming journalism sites I'll go to.

I don't think Jaffe was talking about Kotaku.

Kamiya's personality and perspective is amusing for reasons that go beyond making good games. His detached, blunt responses could be considered charming.

If people go to those sites then we don't deserve better. We deserve exactly what we are getting.

Well, even english people must be Gaijin in London nowadays.

Actually, now that you mentioned, I am a Gaijin in London.

FOREVER GAJIN

Why was the article posted with that title in the first place? Stephen Totillo didn't recognize how sensationalist the title was until Kamiya told Luke Plunkett to eat shit?

The article had over 38,000 hits with the old title. What incentive is there not to post sensationalistic shit?

I dig language discussions... how about we go back to using Oriental for east-Asian people and culture? It's not offensive, it literally means 'eastern.' If they take offense, it's just because they don't understand English language enough.

Sometimes, I really do wonder what the exact difference between Kotaku and your typical gaming blog is (I'll give XBLAFans as an example, I guess, although I don't read many tbh). It is because one is backed by a media conglomerate? It is because one claims to employ self-proclaimed journalists?

I know it's a bit unrelated but I just listened to Jaffe's recording that someone posted a few pages back.

Infinite respect for that man now. Infinite fucking respect.

But he is cool because he made some video games that I like...

YEAH!!

He can be as obnoxious as he wants and not be called from it. He is above criticism.

yup cause oversimplifying points with sarcasm to come off cute helps...something....right? or you could just come out with your point like a normal person.

hmm looking like you are ignoring my post. surprising.

Don't understand why anyone would take offense to him saying "stupid foreigners". You have someone from another country, condescendingly generalizing his entire country based on something he said out of context.

Luke Plunkett is a foreigner to his country, and is stupid. Yep, seems pretty accurate to me.

Your mom. RT @TR3VRAWR: if you had to pick someone to give the eulogy at the PS2s funeral who would it be?

this guy. this fucking guy.

but seriously, both sides are kind of morons.

kusoge is more about something shitty that's a guilty pleasure or enjoyable just for being super shitty

Since when? :P

Kusoge is just a shit game. Some people like shit games but the average usage is just when you wanna say a game is shit.
It's like the people that rage while playing COD or other games saying the game is bullshit, yet they play it.. but in general people call games shit and that's it :P

I think on the list of controversial things, say.... Bayonetta has, "creator's perceived image on twitter" is pretty low on that list.

Kamiya really needs to dial it in. Justified anger or not, this is the sort of thing that scares off business partners and hurts relations between Japanese companies and Anglosphere ones, even beyond just Platinum and anyone else.

I'm already afraid this will see years of work on my own part, in trying to get Steam and various Japanese entities to work together, torched, if it gets out further in the Japanese-language info-sphere. It's already hit 2channel, IIRC.

Of course, I'm also mad as hell at Kotaku for running an article with such a goddamned stupid headline.

Read the piece again, its still tabloid crap.

Bonus comment:

Yeah, I just assumed japanese devs mostly played Pachiko games and Starcraft all day.

He's just like us!

Reading that gave me a strong flashback to my senior year of high school when a stripper asked my Japanese exchange student friend questions about Japan, like whether or not they used money and lived in houses. That's a real thing that happened.

People keep glossing over that for some weird reason.

I don't know if any of you know anything about Japanese culture, I'm an expert, but...

I'm not on Idiotaku's side with this one, but open racism towards foreigners in Japan has honestly never been a big deal to any Japanese. I think all the negative reactions to the Japanese game industry in the past 10 years or so is largely in part a pay back for their rejection of all things west. Hell, I know tons of Japanese people that would not even look at a fucking Xbox because it came from America, especially the one article where Japanese developers were afraid of being caught talking to US publishers or whatever because they feared Sony/Nintendo's wrath.

Both sides have always been critical of each other's taste in gaming, it's just that the west finally has the upper hand to start showing ours a bit more.

how about stupid fucking black people? its pretty offensive in that its lumping a group of people together.

edit: reread the tweet. he just parroted back what was tweeted to him? meh, no biggie

Except you lump an actual group together in your example, Gaijin can be anyone not from Japan, even other asians. It is a false equivalency.

People freaking out about "foreigners" is just the ultimate irony. Japanese gaming, and all of Japanese culture has been smeared on these blogs basically every day for the last several years. Even just yesterday in the thread showing off Platinum's 2013 lineup I remember one commenter saying "Just when you thought it was safe to ignore Japanese games ...." and no one called him out for it. Kotaku runs shit culture articles every day to try and make Japan seem as fucked up as possible, only picking the weirdest shit.

Kamiya lashes back once after their article basically uses him to call all of Japan "clueless," and you guys act like you give a damn about xenophobia now? Give me a break. It's getting to the point of reverse racism because if anyone's been the victim of constant bashing and race-based generalizations in gaming this gen, it's the Japanese.

Just look at the comments on that initial Kotaku article on Kamiya's comments, merely saying he's not interested in PC gaming. "Just when I thought Japan couldn't be any more behind than they already are ..." and on and on.

Cry me a river. Oh no, he said "foreigners."

Great post - totally agree.

Hm... even with the article title change it's still... sensationalist.

Yeah this one is also a good point.

I think the issue here (specifically with this event) - is that Luke took something he said out of context, and blew it up as being an example of how an entire country views something.

Imagine if someone did that to you. Took one little thing you said (and got it wrong) and was like - well this is a perfect example of how your country/culture is, and how they view things. Maybe it's just me, but I think that's really annoying and disrespectful.
