This idea got to me just about some seconds ago...

What if Pokemon X/Y in 3DS gets a Digital Release at the eShop, as well as the retail one.

Which version will you go with?

Digital or Retail?

Digital. I have over 300 hours in Pokemon Black, that game basically lived in my 3DS for an entire year. I expect this to be no different, so why not just have it on my system at all times?

Only thing that worries me is Nintendo's digital policy...we'll see if anything changes by October though.

Id be fine with no old Pokemon until after you beat the Elite Four, but If I have to play through an old game to catch an Abra just to transfer it over to X/Y so I can finally see my favorite Pokemon in 3D im going to be a bit peeved.

Unless theres some reason they cant fit every Pokemon in the game in some form I dont understand the reasoning on leaving them out.

I think Nintendo needs to cut the support of old Pokemon generations eventually. I'm not saying that now is the time to do it, but with more than 650 monsters the series is becoming really bloated. That's a nice thing for fans who are keeping track since the beginning of the franchise, but in the long run it might harm its appeal to kids.

Looking back to 1998-ish, Pokémon was like a religion to us. Every 8-12 year olds were able to name every single one of them in their sleep without any effort. Can you imagine today's generation do that? When they buy a game or just get in touch with Pokemon they are confronted with hundreds upon hundreds of new monsters. That's not as cool as it is alienating. Of course, there are only a few monsters in the spotlight of the anime series and the latest games tried to withhold old Pokemon until the end-game, but I don't think that's a solution. Children are very curious, if they are interested in something they'll want to know everything. You can't hide the old "baggage" from them.

Nintendo probably lacks the courage to do such a thing, so I don't think that fans have to fear it happening. However, it might really be in the series best favor to "reboot" it essentially.

Man, I'm leaning on Froakie but also Fennekin... it really depends on their typing in the end for me.

I'm really hoping that if there's trainer customization that it's deep, maybe not like sim-level of deep, but at least deep enough to let you change the colors of your clothes, different hats, different shoes, gloves, other accessories, etc.

Also, battles are going be so hyep!

I wonder how they're going to choose to do their reveals this time around? Will they still use the Sunday Pokemon show to reveal something every once in awhile? Or will they actually do proper announcements/reveals worldwide?...

Well, here's to hoping the games contain some awesome Pokemon. The starter designs give me hope (none of them look atrocious for once!)

EDIT: Without trading, you'd only have one of Tornadus/Thundurus, as they don't appear in the sequels. Tornadus is in Black, and Thundurus is in White. Not sure if that helps.

If you have a 3DS, there's always Dream Radar. It's not very... good, but it gives you all three of the Kami trio and you could eventually transfer those over.

X and Y do have me interested at least. My pokemon experience: Red, Yellow, Leaf Green. Basically I've been waiting 15 years for progression. But yeah, I have a hunch I'll have to wait for the next Nintendo handheld for any big changes. Sorry, potential changes.

Also the new pokemon designs like this:

Sigh. "Oh I see, it's a Y!" I really hate this "cool" style pokemon. It began in Gen 2 and it just does not fit with my idea of pokemon. At least they had some good designs like Ho-oh but wait that was designed during Gen 1 no wonder.

I take it you're an expert?

What if Pokemon X/Y in 3DS gets a Digital Release at the eShop, as well as the retail one.

Which version will you go with?

Digital or Retail?

Probably retail, since it will likely be cheaper here (UK). I preordered White 2 for £20, when its recommended retail price is £35 - I expect to be able to buy X/Y for about £30, saving £10 off the expected eShop price.

I'd love the convenience of digital, but I don't know if I can trust my SD card to keep my save safe - I'd feel safer having my save on a cartridge (we all know we're getting one cartridge-based save file again).

EDIT: And you'll hopefully get a full-colour physical manual if you go retail :)

Do you guys think there would be a 3DS combo pack where they sell the 3DS and the game? Maybe a special color too?

Cause Pokemon is the only reason I'd bet getting a 3DS lol

As a fellow European, I disagree - there have been plenty Wi-Fi events.

In 4th gen, we had:
-Shiny Raikou/Entei/Suicune
-Mew
-Jirachi
-Latias/Latios
-Darkrai
-Shaymin

In 5th gen, we had:
-Mewtwo
-Darkrai (again)
-Victini
-Reshiram/Zekrom
-Genesect

Finally, Arceus was available via a Dream World promotion.

The only event-only Pokemon missing are Celebi, Deoxys, Manaphy, Keldeo and Meloetta. Two of those were available as Wi-Fi events in the Pokemon Ranger games, and Meloetta hasn't been released in the US either, leaving Celebi and Keldeo as the only two you'd have to have gone to an in-store event to get.
Well, I stand corrected.

But timed events suck. If only because I have apparently never been notified about them. With the exception of Genesect. I knew how to get him. Presumably, Spotpass will play an important role in delivering events in the future.

It's gotten much better, but timed events really are silly when they've got the distribution servers are running 24/7.

Event Pokemon are something I have no qualms against artificially generating, along side legit competitive 'mons, as long as they've been officially released and still adheres to whatever limitations they had there.

It will definitely be released on the eShop, there's no question. Pokemon would be a great game to have a digital copy of, but the allure of physical materials is insurmountable for me. I may end up buying one version's retail copy and the other from the eShop. (or possibly with Version Z).

I don´t really know :D XD

Black has Reshiram, White has Zekrom.

I don´t know about Black/White 2

Never got to play neither of the games D:! But am planning on getting them.

Reshiram and Zekrom are both equally boss. Reshiram has to share a niche with White Kyurem as of B2/W2, but still has a unique typing and hits like a truck with special attacks.

Zekrom punches shit and gives no fucks. Black Kyurem is strong but doesn't have a very deep physical movepool.

Choose which one you think looks cooler - strength-wise, they're pretty equal. I prefer Zekrom.

Hint: the sequels to each contain the opposite legendary, if you choose to play them (Black contains Reshiram and Black 2 contains Zekrom, and vice-versa for White/White 2).

EDIT: Without trading, you'd only have one of Tornadus/Thundurus, as they don't appear in the sequels. Tornadus is in Black, and Thundurus is in White. Not sure if that helps.

Cool thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm going to go with the White version and get Zekrom. This thread and piqued my interest in Pokemon again so I'm off to BestBuy after work for a new 3DS and the White version... Damn impulse buys.

I see nothing wrong with this guy.

Legendaries fit in the same category for everyone i'd think. Either you think they look stupid or you think they fit in just fine.

I still dont like how Moltres looks.

Supposedly. I can't make any sense of it whatsoever. Anyway, where will X and Y fit in? X is like Arceus and Shaymin's love-child. Gotta have something to do with creating nature. Or something.

The problem is no matter what you remove, you're removing someone's favourite.
Break a few shells to make some eggs, etc.

Luvdisc died out because of lead poisoning in the oceans... tragic.
Livdisc is strangely amusing to me. I'd rather give it some evolutions.

It's weird that there are so many pokemon that they are actually revisiting old concepts. Another bull pokemon (with an afro...), another sea turtle, more random uninteresting fish and now another fire fox. So why not develop already existing designs instead?
The better approach, by far.

Is that official art? You're right it does have a simpler design than the previous legendary. The only thing out of place are those diamonds on the reverse side. But that art looks a lot smoother then even the CG from the trailer. There's a lot of angular bits for the sake of it.
It's not official art (I think), but this is, and it looks similar:
I just used the other picture because the above image has an angle that makes it hard to appreciate the creature's design. It's very flat looking.

No. The new Pokemon designs - particularly the legendaries - do not stack up to the early designs. Many of them are ridiculously over designed and don't even look like plausible animals.
Wheezing and Electrodude are my favorite animal-like Pokemon.

I think he's borderline. He's not bad looking on his own, but I don't think he fits well within the Pokemon world. He makes more sense in a Digimon world or something, where characters tend to be a lot more "busy". I think part of the appeal of Pokemon is how simple yet elegant the designs often are.

I'm not a fan of any of the 3 legendary birds, but I also don't like birds...

Yeah, this makes sense. People thinking that they'll just arbitrarily remove some from the National Dex is what confuses me.

That's not what I was saying...that'd be dumb.

Obviously they'd be "in" the game. But I'm saying. The region will have like 150-250, and then you'll have to wait for new games to get all the older ones, through remakes, or new games, or whatevz. But this is just a "hunch".

Im not as sure that you will be able to transfer old mons as you guys are.

I never played a Pokemon game or watched the show.....is it worth buying?

If you don't mind rock-paper-scissors turn based combat , then youd enjoy it. The stories are meh but the world is charming and the multiplayer/breeding/raising mechanics are the real meat of the franchise.

I'm calling it now. The gen after X and Y will be space-based.

SO GOOD.

Does anyone knows if this gen will have 0 communication with the others? That's what I'm hoping, at least. Want to do a fresh start.

I think this gen will be more in the line of 4 - adding evolutions to old Pokemon and just a limited number of new ones. If it was all new Pokemon they wouldn't of shown us mostly old Pokemon in the trailer

I'm not sure why they are making such a big deal over the global release. Iwata makes it sound like a grand achievement, but in reality I bet all they are doing is waiting to release the Japanese version until localization for other territories is finished.

Its still kinda a big deal for fans in general, since you wont have the entire dex spoiled by launch.

I don't think this is the case - they would've released in late September in Japan regardless, with everyone else waiting until the following year. To get all of that done, moving from a 6 month localization to simultaneous release, means they must've gotten extra resources from Nintendo to pull it off this time around.

Probably not because the release schedule is more in line with when the games are usually out in Japan, not the rest of the world. Prior to the announcement, most of us would have expected the games to be out in other territories around Q1/Q2 2014.

Does anyone think its relevant that Pikachu introduces the video saying its own name, instead of using a cry...

I won't lie, I was slightly annoyed by that >_>

it's probably nothing though, they're just using the anime to introduce the trailer.

I would agree, but I don't think that when it comes to Game Freak, one simply "uses the anime".

They might have caved.....!

I think it would need to repeat the cry or distort it a bit in order to fully say all of it, so it would be pretty... weird.

The only Pokemon game I have every played was Yellow. What Pokemon game should I by to get me back in the swing of things and maybe bridge the gap?

Black or White

It looks similar definitely but the artist took some major liberties to improve the look. He made sure all of the major defining arcs (the outline of the arms/tail etc.) flowed nicely the whole way. If he based on the CG design 100% (and at this point the CG should be exactly how they envision their monsters because there are very little limitations) it would look more broken up in the same pose because of the unnecessary overly angular design. The three equilateral triangles lining the armpit have been changed to 2 slightly lopsided different sized triangles. It's a change that makes it look like the pokemon has fur, and those triangles are the tufts that would protrude from it's bent elbows. These types of stylizations can change a poor or sub-par design into an appealing one.

Probably not because the release schedule is more in line with when the games are usually out in Japan, not the rest of the world. Prior to the announcement, most of us would have expected the games to be out in other territories around Q1/Q2 2014.

All this mean is that they could have started development earlier, to allow time for localization before a global release in October.

Anyway, I'm probably wrong. They probably are localizing as they develop. I just like playing devil's advocate.

I'm not the only one that thinks Johto has the most disappointing starters, right?

I liked them well enough when those games were released, but in retrospect, yeah I agree. (but the basic forms are all pretty cute. Just a little simple for my liking.)

All this mean is that they could have started development earlier, to allow time for localization before a global release in October.

It's possible, but that's effectively the same thing. They didn't "delay" the Japanese release because they would never have come out earlier than Q3 anyway.

Black/White. A significant portion of HeartGold/SoulSilver's appeal is from nostalgia - Black/White are the better games.
