Genres or games you just can't get into?

Puzzle games and any variations of puzzle games because I'm an idiot.

JRPGs, specifically JRPGs with turn based combat and random battles. Though even real-time combat doesn't help most of the ones I've played.

"Art" games and indie platformers. The ones I've played have been boring as hell.

J-Rpgs. I hate them. They are too melodramatic(moreso than most other games), not a big fan of turn based combat, and I hate the ridiculous clothing styles that most of them have.
Now it's not every game, but I couldn't even tell you the last time I played a more traditional turn based J-RPG.

Pretty much like every other genre of games though.

Any kind of FPS, most TPS, all racing games, all sports games and virtually any online play, they all bore me to tears. I prefer to play multiplayer with people sitting next to me.

In contrast to the OP, I adore sim-like strategy games about allocating resources and SRPGs. Anything where I can sit and think about my next move rather than button mashing is fine by me.

Real-time strategy games where the computer can make a dozen moves a second off-screen while you are limited to building units one at a time can join the list of stuff I'm not interested in though, I just don't trust the AI not to cheat. Hated that in Dune II, and my feelings haven't changed.

Sometimes I feel there should be a thread where we, with the help and tips from others, try to enjoy or understand genres or games which we have a hard time getting into, but still find somewhat intriguing. Similar this one but with a positive twist at the end and hopefully might lead to some discussion.

But on the topic at hand, I can't understand the enjoyment of the classic beat em up. There is hardly any skill involved and the amount of repetition is insane. They don't try to provide a good narrative or provide any sort of emotional experience that might make up for the poor combat. The only appeal I see is that they can be OK coop experiences since the barrier to entry is so low.

I can't seem to get into strategy games. I haven't tried my hand in many, though. I've played Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars. While I was entertained for the most part, it was towards the end of both I lost interest. The battle began to take too long and I didn't want to dedicate the time to get through them.

It's quite disappointing on my part as Days of Ruin was awesome in ever aspect.

That's a really good idea. I used to love Street Fighter II in the early 90s, but look at SFIV now with the bars at the bottom of the screen, 30+ characters and all the talk of counters and cancels and charges and think 'WTF?'

Six attack buttons plus 3 special moves and the throws was more than enough to keep me interested all-summer-long back then.

Point & Clicks.

Though I played some Monkey Island games a lot back then, nowadays I just can't get into these.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I just can't stand any realistic sport\racing games as well.

I really wish I were more into turn-based strategy games, 4X games, that kind of thing. Problem is, right when my empire starts getting super complex I tend to lose interest. So much micromanagement! Plus, it drives me nuts when I miss a key feature as a new player and don't use it for most of my first few games, completely gimping my empire.

I've been playing Civ 5 lately and it does a good enough job of automating the minutiae and reminding you of per-turn tasks that it's not too bad, but things like Sword of the Stars kill me.

FPS, 3PS, RTS, MMO, MOBA, sandbox and sports games are all extremely boring to me. I've literally fallen asleep within minutes while trying to play some of them, even in the middle of the day.

To be fair, there are exceptions -- I greatly enjoyed Quake, Heretic and NBA Jam in the mid-90s, and, more recently, Resident Evil 4/5 and Metroid Prime. But in general, I do not enjoy such games.

Virtually all single player games. They just aren't challenging enough for me in almost all instances (some Puzzle/Strategy games are excluded, along with occasional exceptions like Dark Souls / Ninja Gaiden).

Play arcade games. (Or console games made with arcade design principles)

There's relatively little that's changed between SF II and IV in terms of gameplay. There are indeed more characters and supers/ultras/EX specials (more powerful special moves that can only be performed at the cost of some of the aforementioned bars), as well as the SFIV-exclusive focus mechanic (press MP+MK to absorb an attack, release to perform an attack). Oh, and throws are now performed by LP+LK. Even with zero knowledge of/practice with any of the new elements (except the new throw command), a competent SFII Guile or Ryu player can pick up SFIV and instantly be within the top 10-20% of XBox Live/PSN/GFWL players.

Shining Force 2. I like SRPGs, but I don't see the appeal of this one. Garbage story and weak characters married to mediocre gameplay. I estimate (via walkthrough) I played about a third of it, and every battle felt exactly the same. I never felt like I was employing different strategies nor did I ever feel in danger of losing.

Fighting games - very very poor for new players who want to progress beyond button bashing, as every tutorial seems to presume that you've been playing SF2 in the arcades for millennia.

Same with MOBA games which like to teach you the mechanics (LoL has a pretty good tutorial for this), but then completely neglect information surrounding items. Being a newcomer to the genre, I was told to go and browse through numerous user written guides on various forums/fan sites, all offering differing information.

Those two genres come across as catering extremely well to players in the know, but almost blocking off anyone who wishes to join in.

Edit: To be honest, I'm still annoyed that Valve haven't seen fit to introduce the tutorial (that is greyed out presently) into DOTA2. No point in handing out millions of invites if the community has such a huge skill divide between it, partly down to one side having no fucking idea what to do.

Fighting games. Can't be convinced they're more than button mashers. Although Smash Bros was fun for a while, but the Street Fighter type just seem like button mashers.

Sports Games, like Madden or NBA Live.

I suppose I can add Fighting games in there as well.

I'm not that great at 'em, nor can I get into 'em.

Strategy games in general.
Just can't bring myself to get into em.
Any kind.
Love Final Fantasy, but couldn't bring myself to play and finish any of the Tactics games.
Heard of how people love Fire Emblem, but couldn't get into it.
I've watched my brother play XCOM, and just didn't feel it.
Haven't played it yet, but... I guess I should try that one.

Team Fortress 2. I've tried to get into it from time to time and while it's fun, it has yet to really hook me.

This goes for Minecraft as well. I can see the appeal and I have enjoyed playing it with another person, but I get bored of it before too long.

Dating sims. More specifically Kawata Shoujo. Nothing made me question what I was doing with my life quite like the realisation that came with mulling over whether to court a busty blind babe or a half human/half cyborg athlete runner. I kept picturing my dearly departed brother looking down and laughing his ass off at me and I thought to myself "yeah, I better give this sort of thing a pass from now on."

Puzzle
Racing
Linear, plot driven games with lack of good gameplay
RTS

Games whose most appealing aspect is canned animations / cutscenes in animated gifs.

Any racing game more realistic than mario kart or f-zero, sports games that aren't Base Wars. I've never been good at online RTSes except maybe Warcraft 3 for a bit, but I like them in singleplayer.

There are some genres that I loved as a kid but don't have patience for anymore. I mean I must have spent hundreds of hours on Simcity 2000 but I'd get bored of it fast now.

Fallout/The Elder Scrolls /Western type RPG's - I guess I just don't like it when I'm thrown in the open for the entire game. And the artstyle is not to my liking most of the time.
Fighting Games (except for BlazBlue but that's solely because of the story)
Racing Games
Simulator Types - Date Sims are perfectly fine though, of course. I love them. <3
Sports Games

MOBAs, shooters, hack'n'slash, console interactive novels, sports, fighting games, indie games

S&P 2 was a blast and the last shooter I enjoyed. My interest just died

I played DOTA2 and it's definitely not for me. I had zero fun

the last sport game I loved was ISS98

hack'n slash is a genre i just cannot enjoy anymore. If I was 15 I would probably love their simplicity though

I played fighting games until DOA4, which was great and very user friendly. Since I don't have neither the patience nor time to learn a thousand different button combinations, and my friends abandoned the genre altogether, fighting games are dead to me (until Smash Bros 3DS/U of course)

console interactive games are tedious at best and horribly written at worst. Genre needs to crawl out of the egg and mature a lot

indie games are just completely uninteresting to me

Sports games, unless its a "fun"sports game like NBA JAM(not the recent remake one)

Oh and fishing games, I love fishing in games that offer it(legend of Zelda, ffxi, other rpgs types) but not actual fishing games so if I had to play something like "Big Bass Challenge" then no.

^
Same as him + hunting games.

JRPG's. Can't stand anything about them, specially their art direction, characters design and their turn-based combat (when applicable).

Mass Effect
I beat the first one and the second one. Doesn't mean I was into them, in fact I pretty much hated every minute of playing both of them and only did so because of the hype. Never bothered with the third one and I never will.

Assassin's Creed
Beat the first one, hated every minute of it. Bought the second one off hype and stopped playing it after a few hours. Never bothered with the franchise again.

Turn based games are also a prime candidate.

I hear about the "one more turn" mentality, and how people can spend hours deeply engrossed, but I just don't get it.

I bought Civilization 4 for that exact reason, but I got bored of clicking 'end turn' or whatever and seeing nothing significant happen, or being told to research pointless shit for hours on end - like, give me a break guys.

I would actually appreciate good games in that area though if people can suggest any. I have XCom on PS3 already but I got bored of that really quickly too.

well it's hard to make names since you find CIV4, a great game, so boring. Maybe you should start with a Pokemon game, they're fast paced and highly addicting and definitely have less demanding mechanics than a game like CIV4
