PSP also didn't have the mobile-pocalypse to compete against in its first holiday. Not that mobile is the only thing keeping Vita from being little more than a sales discussion punch line, but I firmly believe that it plays a significant role in Vita's malaise/walking death.
 
If the PS3 has only sold ~32million consoles between japan and the US LTD (23million US + 8million japan) are they really anywhere near 77 million WW? I know they're successful in europe but I find it hard to believe they've sold 45 million consoles there.

If it was mobiles the 3DS would be effected in a similar way.
 
I'm ready to laugh qt the end of this year, when supposedly at least one new hardware will be released, and its predecessor will double its sales. Also: Call of Duty, though declining, is a goldmine for Activision. Do you they will stop to release it from next year onwards? We are going to see Call of Duty for PS360 for at least other 3 yaers.
 
Software sales that only count physical sales are irrelevant. For example: From the four people I know that got a Wii U all had bought only 1 or 2 games "physically" but the same amount digitally.
 
PSP was a bold new attempt at redefining the handheld by Sony at the time. It was a new and exciting unknown.

Vita is a continuation of the PSP without the ability to pirate everything. Outside of Japan Piracy is probably the only reason PSP did as well as it did.

Arguably it has. Weaker 2012 than 2011-- despite two extra months of reporting in 2012-- can be attributed to any number of factors, including the popularity of mobile versus traditional dedicated handheld gaming platforms and a weaker slate of releases in 2012 versus the year prior.

It's one hypothesis, and by no means the only recognized correct one.

In all honesty I'd be shocked if the 3DS does worse next year than it did this year barring something unexpected happening.

Unless Nintendo wants to share those digital sales people will go on the bricks and mortar ones.

So GBA was also affected by mobile phones? Because it never sold so much in a single month, IIRC. People must realize that a platform can have less appeal per se; no one was expecting 3DS to sell as much as DS did; probably no other platform will sell as much as DS did, in particular with that fast pace.

In the meanwhile, October 2013 will have Pokemon.

With Monster Hunter Ultimate, Lego City Stories, Rayman Legends, Wii Fit U, Aliens, Injustice and Pikmin 3 in the first few month of 2013 the Wii U will surely sell a nice amount.

sort of an obscure year to choose from. the ds's second december was 2005, and it sold 1.07m. the gba sold 1.2m for reference.

and boy- those early ds sales were awful. it sold almost half what it did the entire year during december.

Nintendo's overall performance in the US in 2012 was rather lackluster. If Nintendo delivers the software that it says it will for 3DS, especially with Pokemon, YOY comps should be ridiculously easy to meet, if not surpass.

In theory, we should see more WiiU games as well. That should help to bolster numbers versus the Wii in 2012, which was on life support for most of the year.

Overall, Nintendo *should* have a better 2013 across the board than 2012. How much better, of course, is a book that will be written in 12 chapters.

how many of them were free downloads, or almost free downloads (that is, below 2 dollars)? I downloaded like 20 app in the last few months for iPad, but I hardly used all of them, just compulsive purchase (the only one I really played was TWEWY for obvious reasons).

Some of the highest grossing apps are free downloads.

That is the beauty of mobile. How many F2P games on Vita or 3DS?

wow thats pretty crazy. I moved over to android and while they clearly arn't at IOS lvls there play store is getting better and better. Wonder if it can catch up over time on quality of releases. Its fine for the most part as most of the bigger names release on both anyway even if the android version takes longer).

I think the amount of tablets and things like iPod Touchs bought for kids will really impact hand held sales. This is all anecdotal but I know a lot of people who have kids that got them those types of devices or say how they play on theres all the time rather than a hand held.

Time will tell of course. I just would like more and better games to come out on my nexus 7 lol. Vita is fantastic but its not doing great. Il grab the games I want on it and love the system till it dies but you cant stop reality.

'Free' downloads are often the highest grossing, not to mention the fact that I was pointing to that as possible confirmation that the userbase is rapidly growing and increasingly downloading things, not making any conclusion about overall revenue.

Again though, 'free' is a total red herring.
 
also im pretty sure if people Sony and Microsoft could get people to just impulsivly download there games on a whim they would love it.

Anyway there are a lot of Free games out there done ina way designed to just take advantage of people who have no patience and can be played for hours and hours without spending a penny.... and they still get a lot of money from IAP's. Granted there are ones that you have to purchase for..... its far from a perfect system but its getting better as devs try new methods.

Does this really matter? If you have a really small install base, what is there to gain for the publishers in knowing that relatively to the userbase you might do better than on another platform, while still you're expected to do better absolute numbers on the other platform? I don't know if this is the case, so don't shoot ;), but imagine GameCube had a higher attach rate than PS2, would all the developers be stupid to not back the GameCube more than the PS2? As a GCN owner I have to say: No, they would not have been stupid, focussing on PS2 would still have been the right thing to do, financially.

@creamsugar: I know I've already asked you about this, and if you say you don't want to, I'll never ask again, but could you give us an updated (ballpark) number for Yoshi's Island DS? I'm really wondering how it has done after the initial run (which is when we stopped getting the huge amount of numbers).

To think that the Wii could have surpassed DS in sales during this month if only they'd been available on store shelves. Nintendo could have really milked the first two years of Wii if they had been a little less self-congratulatory about the Wii breaking records and focused on getting systems on the shelves.

Well yeah that's the whole point - handheld market is never going to reach those numbers again because people are buying tablets and smartphones.

I have a feeling the nature of the Vita made it more susceptible. A lot of the appeal with the PSP was how it was a neat, cutting edge piece of tech the likes of which we hadn't seen before, not at a relatively affordable price anyway. That, and Sony was at the top of their game and appealed to a lot of people that didn't care for Nintendo stuff while the DS looked to be a potential disaster. These really aren't qualities that hold up as well now: if you're all about cutting edge tech the Vita may be novel, but it's not a smartphone or tablet even if the guts are roughly similar, just a dedicated game machine, console players may well be more apathetic about handhelds as a result of phones/tablets/REALLY cutting edge graphics than they were 5-8 years ago, and it's not really that cheap especially when you consider the Kindle Fire (HD) and especially the Nexus 7. That, and Sony IS kind of a wreck these days, and while I imagine this has been something of a problem their whole life it really seems to be showing now how badly coordinated the regions seemingly are thanks partially to how important online is now.

Nintendo meanwhile always focused more on cheaper handhelds that did ENOUGH, and hit a wider audience that can be more receptive to the idea of having a handheld for their gaming device, and in the case of kids may be too young to really be trusted to have a tablet/smart phone by some parents (I don't think I'd be very comfortable getting them one unless I had piles of cash, and even then a pure physical or physical/digital hybrid library is more practical for content control than pure digital). I think that's allowed them to be more resilient, plus I figure among core gamers either A. they don't care so much about cutting edge visuals so they're content to get a 3DS so long as there's games they want, B. it's where all the games they really want come out, or C. they'll get just about any relevant gaming device, and with numbers like that the 3DS IS relevant regardless of what some may say, at least within the context of gaming devices.
 
As many have said Nintendo isn't quite as anaemic as expected, got to hand it to the unflinching dedication of Nintendo's beta testers biggest fans.

New Super Mario Bros. U showing signs of fatigue in my opinion. Time to put the New series to rest for a few years, I think.

They had a similar experience on the Wii, they supported it from the start with titles like Red Steel, which didn't really succeed. But they also struck gold with Rayman Raving Rabbids, or Just Dance some time later.
If they keep the same strategy, they shouldn't have regrets but keep trying. Not everything will work, but when it does, it will mean a lot for them. If they don't try, they won't find the next golden goose.
 
I don't think Ubisoft had any lofty expectations for ZombiU. It was developed by the same studio that also makes Rayman Legends and had just finished Rayman Origins at the end of last year. So I'm quite sure that, while it's the best European studio form my point of view, they still have budgeted their Wii U launch games relatively low and might break even with this kind of sales. They must've known beforehand that Wii U will not be the second coming of Wii (because, really, did anyone expect such a result?) and both games (Rayman and ZombiU) have good chances to sell for quite a while, still. As for the port jobs: THey won't generate a lot of revenue for any publisher, but their importance comes more from learning the hardware and getting Wii U buyers who don't already have a PS360 to try out these franchises.

Someone (Iwata?) said they want NSMB to be a once-per-console series, so we're good on that.

Some shuffling might have been good so there wouldn't have been all of three months between NSMB2 and NSMBU. But then, what other big Wii U game has actually been announced, much less ready for release? Pikmin 3 doesn't have the same star power as Mario - though perhaps it could have sold the tablet/HDness better. That game is just gorgeous.

I think the 77M is wrong but the last official shipments if I remember put PS3 only a couple of million behind 360 WW so it clearly has outsold 360 very well outside the US.

The couple of times I remember seeing numbers relating to Europe (with exception of UK) PS3 is often more than double 360 - essentially the opposite if US. UK tends to be roughly a 60/40 split in 360 favour if I remember correctly.

Geographically this gen really has seen enormous splits, and if you factor in the earlier 360 launch what you really have WW is a tie however this vanishes by region with 360 winning US and UK and PS3 most everywhere else.
 
By the end of March 07 Ubisoft announced Red Steel sold 950,000 copies (globally). I doubt ZombiU is going to match that.

PS2 was leading xbox by quite a margin then Sony went $599 and expected everyone to get two jobs.
