the puzzles are super lame imo. i'd like it if there was more emphasis placed on story for each gym, rather than trying to differentiate them with the puzzles. like, the anime gives a unique story for each gym/gymleader which gives it a bigger impact. i know that they usually do that with a couple gym leaders you interact with outside of the gym in the games, but it is usually just boring drama with team ___ rather than actual local problems.

I just feel that the Gyms are so isolated from the whole pokemedia that should exist in the game. I want to have my moment each time I face one of the skilled gym leaders.

I do like the ideas of puzzles, but then again they end up being more of a detour from anything. Like I would much prefer crazy ruins, or under water caves systems with ancient mythological puzzles to solve.

Yeah it would be great if there was more a presence of the leaders. BW added the improved dialogue system, so I think they could really pull some neat things off going forward in the series.

The puzzles are just there. I don't really get anything out of them. Brycen's gym in B2/W2, however, was great. Good music, excellent tone to the gym, no puzzles to deal with, and you could choose who you wanted to fight. I like gyms like that.

...Brycen's gym? Is this a joke I'm not getting or what

Put plainly (in papercamm's perspective), the power to pull a poor Pidgey into a particular party's pants-pocket projects the possession of prior, probably prominent, personal problems.

Alternatively, "papercamm's pocket Pidgey party."

That preposition is pretty prudently presposterous, practioner of painful P-puns.

Yup.

Lol

I remember in the subs I watched JoJo screaming: "NO! Not the frog"

Perhaps the pretense of his predicament is perched upon the particular perception that packing ones pockets with such puissance paints a perverse picture of how pokemon are present in one's party.

I am properly pleased you played this petty pastime.

Pillocks.

Come again?

*cough* Nothing.

So about those gym puzzles:

I honestly find the gyms pretty boring and I find it wierd how the mechanics used to get through them often never turn up anywhere else in the game. It'd be much more interesting if their gimmicks showed up in the overworld and the actual gyms were more a spectators thing. Something as simple as the fighting gym in Kanto would be fine for me.

Exactly what I want. They seem to have been spicing up the routes more and more, and I think puzzles could find a place in them. We had the Farfetch't recovery in the Ilex forest from GSC. Or even the Trick Masters house. Just stuff that is organically present to the player on the routes between towns so its more than just grass and trainer battles.

Anyway does anyone know how compatible the JP/US/EU versions of Gen 3 and 4 are with each other?

Perfectly compatible, iirc. You can trade back and forth without issue, except for (and I forgot the exact details), names will get cut off depending on each region's character limit.

They're all fine. Gen 3 has the problem of nicknames getting messed up when trading to a Japanese game (in the Japanese versions, nicknames can only be 5 characters long), but that's fixed in gen 4.

Yep, organic is the key really. There feels like too much of a gap between the gyms and the world as there is now. I just want the games to feel less like a series of gyms and more like a story/journey that involves battling gym leaders now and again.

I mean even the actual overworld progression largely feels like walking through a series of fights instead of actually... going on a pokemon journey. It ends up making the storyline feel far more repetitive than it should (admittedly I haven't played B2/W2 and I haven't finished B/W).

...Which is another reason I want side quests in the game. They could add so much more variation to the series.

Thank you!

Gym puzzles being one-off have always been a complaint of mine. If they showed up again in the overworld a few times, I certainly wouldn't mind it over the usual HM obstacles.

There's actually a bonus to trading International Pokemon in Gen IV...

I remember I was one of the first English players to discover this, I traded over my Shiny Wobbuffet from Leaf Green to my imported Japanese Pearl, and totally freaked when I suddenly noticed a PokeDex entry in English.
