Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has a bunch of Mario enemies in its side scrolling/platforming segments. Those segments are basically just Mario homages.

A few characters/enemies from other games also make appearances in the main 3/4 overview segments of the game.

Shy Guys,

Pokeys,

and Kirby.

Shy Guys and Pokeys made their first appearances in Super Mario Bros. 2, which takes place in Subcon, which is a dream world. Of course, Kirby lives in Dream Land.

Remember what else is a dream world? Koholint Island, the setting of Link's Awakening. :P I wonder if this was intentional.

Totally intentional references, culminating in the ultimate SMB2 reference:

EDIT: Oh, right, as stated below, Wart's in there, too.

There are also Goombas, Piranha Plants, Boos, a Chain Chomp, and Will Wright (creator of SimCity).

Edit: Tee hee! That's what you get for posting responsibly and taking the time to find supporting info.

Prince Richard from "For the Frogs the Bell Tolls" also appears, since the game was developed by people who did Link's Awakening and served as a model, iirc.

Also the first appearance of the Mario-look alike, Tarin, who you find turned into a Tanuki after eating a mushroom.

What I wouldn't give for a Nintendo-translated ROM of that on the 3DS VC...

While we're talking Mario 2 enemies, a bunch of them are hidden in Mario Kart 7's Shy Guy Bazaar course, as well as the Angry Sun from Mario 3. And apparently the entire level is actually based on Doki Doki Panic!

Not sure why they think it's hard to deduce why Angry Sun is there. Angry Sun's first appearance was a desert level. The course is a tribute to Doki Doki Panic. Doki Doki Panic had an Arabian theme. Arabian->Middle East->Desert.

"Poplar." *Sigh*

I think they just meant that connection is more tenacious than the rest, which had direct ties to the source.

I didn't click on that video but as soon as I saw "poplar" I knew it was either Cool Bits or Chrontendo.

This probably isn't the best place for this post, but I can't find a specific thread on easter eggs.
Ok well, when I was a kid I had an Atari 2600 (the 'junior'). I remember sitting down one day and wanting to play either the Super Action Pak or Sports Action Pak (can't remember which cartridge it was, but it was definitely one of the two since those cartidges had the 4-game menu). I remember turning the console on, and instead of the game menu, there was a list of Elvis songs. I'm sure Love Me Tender was one of the songs.
To this day I don't know if this is a legit easter egg, or something I am falsely remembering from my childhood. I haven't been able to replicate that screen. Google isn't helping me.
I guess I just want closure...hopefully another gaffer remembers this too? Maybe?

I have been thinking about this for over 20 years.

I figured Shy Guy Bazaar was supposed to be a shout-out to Mario 2 USA (since Shy Guy originated there), but I didn't notice the sprites. Wow.

Reminds me of something that happened to me when playing pokemon blue.

I was surfing the waters and all of a sudden gary surfed up to me and challenged me. We battled, and one of his pokemon was a missingno. Is this an actual glitch, or am I remembering my childhood incorrectly?

I realized this searching for hidden items in Castlevania 1. When you stitch together all the screens of Castlevania it's form roughly looks like the map you see in the game.

Map of the game world represents the game world. Who knew? :P

I appreciate anything that shines a light on the genius of Castlevania 1, but this was always super obvious, even when the game was new and I was like 5.

Speaking of Shining Force, was it always intentional that when a battle starts, your character's attack or spells always hits in tune with the crescendo of the battle music?

Never noticed. IIRC you can hold down one of the buttons and make everything go a little bit faster so maybe that's why. I think it made the text go faster and removed some animation from other things (for instance, the fairy would just make one loop instead of floating around the screen for a while).
