VGLeaks: Details multiple devkits evolution of Orbis

Hopefully there are some big ones.

My source was willing to commit to a number on the bandwidth:
176 Gb/S

Essentially 3GB of data per frame. Pretty crazy people

I'm looking forward to hearing about the launch lineups. Just from a couple third party games we know about it'll be a strong launch for both and I can see one or both of them locking up an exclusive next-gen version of a multiplat current gen game. I have a feeling that MS will have the better day 1 line up but Sony will likely have a few big games coming down the line in the coming months after launch.

Huh, seems like a big downgrade in terms bandwidth. Here's hoping that it's not too big of a drop to cause issues for games in development right now.

Console launches only really immediately sell to the core and both parties have big install bases with active hardcore fans. They'll be fine.
My own belief is that this is the biggest advantage both consoles have when the transition begins.

Sony and Microsoft would be epically stupid not to use their own users to advertise the new hotness.

"XXJillSniperXX has logged in on her PS4.
She's better than you.
Upgrade today!"

I'm sorry to ask this Kagari......Have you seen any these games? I sense you're excited.

I've been slipped little hints here and there, but nothing I can share unfortunately.

You mean new first party IPs (which are really welcome), or do you think that there's still some kind of dancing around third parties to get exclusives, going on right now?

I think both Sony and MS will be courting third parties this time.

VsXIII, now Final Fantasy XV for Durango and Orbis.

I'm hoping the comparative simplicity of the PS4 means that there'll be a lot more launch goodness - in both quantity and quality.

Although, I guess things like high quality asset generation etc. are still going to take just as long?
The problem is that it's not 2005/6 anymore. Exclusives will sale but enough? Are the consumers mentally ready for next gen? when I hear from my friends stuff like "didn't they just come out a few years ago, why a new one so quick?" type of comments.

Hardcore sets up the foundation but will it be enough this time?
Weird. The PS3 and 360 launched before the original iPhone. I don't know how anyone could see that as just a few years ago...

Do you guys think it's more frustrating not knowing anything, or knowing something big and not being able to tell anyone?

I know right what the hell.

Versus is vaporware

Look at this way, you always have the last say.

Pertaining to Kagari, I know he has journalistic sources privy to insider information of third and first parties. As such, he would know of news of a few IPs that are to be revealed soon. Expect KZ4 to be among them.

She said she's heard about third parties having a lot of input in Orbis' design so I'm guessing she's talking about 3rd party games.

Kagari when you say "definitely", what do you mean? I think you should post everything game wise you know just so we can make sure it is ok.

If Versus 13 got moved to a launch next gen title then GOT DAMN I would lose it

She.

And GG has openly been hiring for their titles.

There is that. I still don't have the entire picture, but I think both first and third parties have been working on titles now for at least two years.

I'm a little nervous of both MS and Sony. I've said it before that IMO the market can not support 2 console launches at the same time like that. And according to their business plans NEITHER can wait months and give the other a head start. I can't see consumers supporting one without the other getting the shaft.

SO all I'm saying is.....Somebody is getting FUCKED UP this holiday season.

PS3 and Wii launched simultaniously and I think the PS3 struggling had as much to do with it's price as it did with a "hotter" competitor. Even then it's EU launch the following March was huge and right in the face of the gangbuster selling Wii.

This is a different situation of course the price points will be much closer than Wii/PS3 as will the target markets and also their will likely be ALOT of crossover in third party support.

Alot will depend on who gets to market first and the exclusive software and possibly services that they can offer.

If they both come within a month or a couple of weeks of eachother I would expect them both to do fairly evenly with Durango taking better %'s in US/UK and PS4 taking mainland EU/Japan.

Do you guys think it's more frustrating not knowing anything, or knowing something big and not being able to tell anyone?

I knew something big before the PS3's launch and it SUCKED. Course I was younger too. If I knew something HUGE now I think I would be mostly excited to see everyones reactions. If you share it you take all the excitement away.

Clock speed/bandwidth adjustments at pre-production = heat management within final casing design.

That's my guess as well. I wonder if any other clockspeeds will change. I think both Durango and Orbis have room to upclock the CPU since Jaguars run pretty cool.

That's nice even if it's just to spice things up :D
Although most publishers are basically threatening Sony and Microsoft that either they can sell their games counting on their installed bases combined, or they'll go mobile/social :D
But I guess there might be interesting exceptions for both.

Actually if you back to my post in the last page near the end where I quoted myself, you will see that it is more than sufficient to feed the pitcairn GPU and CPU (if for the 12GB/sec is based in fact) and still have bandwidth left over. So no worries there.

She.

I did not know you were human female. I will be sure not to repeat my error, good miss.

There should be some big ones.

So how much of a difference would 192gb/s vs 176gb/s actually make? They both seem like a shit load, would diminishing returns play a factor here at all? Meaning the real world difference of what the gpu is capable of putting on screen, might not of been able to really take advantage of 192gb/s anyways?

Well, I know two big things for this new gen, but I can't say anything. Doubt it's juicy as what Kagari has though. Depending on the fan base asked lol.

176GB/s is still like 3GB per frame @60fps. I don't think one should be too concerned about it if true.

The average consumer is also not going to sell one console to buy the other. I get where you're coming from, but we have to be realistic here. That initial install base and time frame advantage Microsoft had with the 360 did the world of good. I don't think Sony will want to risk losing too much market share from the get go this time. Worse still if Durango is more affordable to buy than Orbis.
Well I guess at this point we'll just have to hope for the best. I do wonder if even a 6 month delay would make a big impact. If devs get comfortable with Durango then games will be developed there and ported to orbis but since architecture is mostly the same, I doubt it even matters.

Fingers crossed consoles get good yields so they can activate some CUs for retail.

192 was honestly overkill and I don't know how Sony could have afforded it. Your getting about 4.5 GB of data per frame with 192. Thats more ram than the system even has :P

176 seems just right. Your getting 3GB of data per frame which is still a pretty crazy amount.

This will prove my theory then. Are you really excited for the reveals or are you dying to let it out?

I tend to associate Kagari with Square Enix, lol. Would it be right to assume the reference is to Japanese third parties?

In terms of the third parties who helped design the system, I wasn't given any specifics... in terms of titles - development houses from the west and Japan are working on things.

She.

There is that. I still don't have the entire picture, but I think both first and third parties have been working on titles now for at least two years.

Not a surprise, mostly japanese developers like Kojima, Square, Polyphony, have basically conceded that this gen didn't went well for them and started developing engines and tools to be ready in time for the next round.

Just saw that. Makes sense and it would save some heat/power.

I'm going to predict that MGS5 is going to have a next gen version exclusive to Orbis near launch. I can see MS doing the same for Witcher 3.

Thank the source. They gave into peer pressure.

But what about the GPU? As if nobody is giving a damn! This is the most intersting piece, and we have close to nothing about it (other than the 1.84 TF target figure)...RSX was a bit (not much) unrefined, and up to now, Sony deisgns'd been CPU centric. I fear the worst...
GPU, people, GPU!

Question about fast RAM:

What does it actually accomplish? 176Gb/S is really, really fast isn't it? Why exactly would they be going for something like that?

I hope it works out better for them this time too. Japanese developers will probably really like the PS4's less complicated setup as compared to the PS3, where too few of them really took advantage of the system.

Wii and PS3 were going for 2 different audiences tho, That's not the case with MS and Sony right now. Their audience are basically blended together except for Japan titles/fanbase that Sony has over MS.

Some western developers as well. It is going to be a whole different landscape this time.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one on GAF who doesn't know someone on the inside.

Kagari, when you said about how both third and first parties were both consulted during PS4's design process, were Japanese third party developers also involved?

Also,
nice dog
