He lost against Punk because he literally defeated himself, or was beaten by Ryback (monster push), and losing to Rock was nearly a year ago.

I haven't really been keeping up, but lol @ those of you who thought Dolph would win the rumble. Guys like him only get cheap MITB cash-ins these days.

A guy like Punk or Cena should not be the person to end taker's streak, if anyone should.
Someone in their mid to late 20s or very early 30s that they want to establish as the next mega star, someone on the cusp of breaking out or who can make the transition without it seeming forced. I'd nominate dolph ziggler, but he's going to turn 33 this summer. Cody Rhodes is the only guy I can thnk of who isn't already in his 30s that is ready for the push.

the reason most people are upset is because with the finish of the rumble, the writing was on the wall, and we are dissapointed about the sequel noone wanted.
They're trying to make the title the focal point of the company. You know. The toy the spins around.

Say that Cena and Punk are 1a and 1b of the WWE.
The decline from there of marketable wrestlers takes a harsh turn after that.
That's what John Cena is right now.
He's been losing. But not in any way that helps anybody out. All of the matches were tainted with interferences or backstabbing or draws or other ways (like still doing an AA to Show to only get thrown out so Punk gets the victory). It's just annoying that they continue to give one man super human strength and never put anyone over.
Zigs briefcase is for the WHC only, so he can't cash in on the WWE champ

No, Punk isn't 1b. It's harsh to say, but of the everyday roster, it's Cena, then everyone else.

That's because they refuse to showcase anyone but Cena. The likes of Daniel Bryan are booked as weak, never gets main events, etc, but got over with the crowd big time based on how entertaining he was.
Did WWE capitalize on this, with a big push for Bryan? No. Cena instead, and whoever they decided people are supposed to like.

Cena couldn't be more of a gimmick character if he tried. He's an automaton that sells t-shirts, shills PPVs and comes with all these accessories. Batteries not included.

Maybe he'd get a better run where he got meaningful wins AND was allowed to make a promo where he didn't come off like a neutered corporate suckup.

Again, you are thinking as a smark, not as a casual viewer that has limited investment in the WWE. Not as the board of directors @ the WWE that want the highest return on investment.
Do you know how many people will watch the SuperBowl next week that would otherwise not watch a football game the rest of the year?
Wrestlemania is akin to that in terms of wrestlers.
Best believe the Rock is getting in the millions for these performances/appearances.
