How many Japanese-made games from this gen can you name that don't include fanservice

Admittedly I haven't seen this anime, but I'm guessing it's aimed towards young girls and not otaku.

That's just the thing. In the 80's you could have shojo manga/anime characters that hadn't been fetishied for otaku. Nowadays it's hard to find a series starring girls that don't have the compulsory and formulaic episodes for the kimono/maid outfit/towel at hot springs/whatever the current fetish is with the otaku.

See this view does not even remotely reflect reality. Let's take a look at last season and see if I find any show with female leads that isn't otaku pandering nonsense.

Shows targeted specifically at girls:
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (shoujo manga adaptation)
Say, I Love You (shoujo manga adaptation)
Kamisama Kiss (shoujo manga adaptation)
Hiiro no Kakera (otome game adaptation)
Aikatsu (female oriented social game adaptation?)

Other shows with female leads that don't come across as otaku pandering at all:
Kyousogiga
Code: Breaker
From the New World
Psycho-Pass

So hard to find! That was only the majority of shows with female leads! There are shows like you describe, but they are a minority and easy to skip.

I dunno, I think they're starting to look older than ever, personally. I mean, have you seen what typical 80s anime looks like?

Compared to that, modern anime girls look like they're 40. ;)

(Consequently, I find it interesting that that's literally the first thing that came up when I image-searched "80s anime girl," since I've actually seen 4 episodes of the show she's from, "Magical Fairy Persia," and always assumed that show was SUPER-obscure. I guess... it's not? It's a pretty good show, though, if you like magical girl titles. It's about a girl who was raised by lions in Africa, then transplanted into modern-day Japan and given the power to transform into an older woman by a couple stray kappa. It's about as dumb and ridiculous as it sounds, but that also makes it quite entertaining to watch!)

wat

the character is definitely young.

At least compare today where characters look like 11 years old but are apparently late teens.

Also compare... say, Gatchaman, where the characters look old but are actually just mostly late teens.

Hot damn just look at dat washboard chest.

In all seriousness, I can at least more or less tolerate normal fanservice whenever it rears its ugly head. The creepy Moe stuff though I can't deal with. I don't understand why and how sexualized Moe became such a big trend. Not trying to insult anyone, but I would have thought their target audience would have just felt patronized instead since they're just being blatantly pandered to.

Moe became big because the anime industry in Japan makes its money almost entirely off merchandising (the studio creating anime does not get paid for simply getting their show on TV, it is an advertisement for other products) and the people who most reliably spend big money on body pillows and statuettes are moe fans.

But it's also on its way out as the major driving force of the industry because it turns out that focusing on a bunch of people with limited income has, uh, limits.

I think I'm going to have to play this game.

Trust me, you don't want to play those games. (At least the first one)

There is female characters being dressed skimpily, and then there are utterly ridiculous things like VC's beach wear side story fan service.

To be honest, considering who is the character designer of this game, I'm impressed that the game didn't have more pointless fan service.

And seriously guys, the apparent age of a virtual character is something entirely dependent on the artists involved. In other words, it has more to do with the artistic vision than some weird stuff. (Welp, in some cases, there is weird stuff involved)

Summer and winter anime seasons are still filled to the brim with moe though.

Moe isn't the same thing as fanservice, though. Moe is... well, it's a modernization of a longstanding Japanese literary device. It's only when moe characters are specifically sexualized that it really counts as "fanservice," I'd say. And while some shows sexualize the HELL out of moe characters (KissxSis as a rather blatant example), most of the moe shows you see really don't.

Especially not if they want to be considered true moe, since moe is largely all about innocence.

Yeah I know. I was just responding to a post about moe rather than fanservice.

Demon's Souls
Dark Souls

The armor actually makes sense.

And I'm just gonna assume most Nintendo games.

Disregarding Mario (and even then... Peach and Daisy, and hell Bowser have their moments), there's Zelda having boob stares, Pokemon and... well innuendo, Star Fox has Wolf, and Fire Emblem has weird shit going on.

For all the disturbing acid trips it has, Mother seems to be on the safe side.

So when people are saying fan service, they mean sexual content meant to arouse the player right? Something like excessive cleavage, sexual teasing, things like that?

Because if so, then Nintendo games don't really have any fan service at all.

One of the biggest reasons I'm not into Japanese games as much anymore is because they keep trying to make me jerk off to them and I don't want to and I get kind of weirded out that they are so into the idea of making their audience masturbate...

never really picked up on this - thanks for pointing it out. i'll be paying more attention from now on :) ...

Not just that. Panty shots, obviously leather wear, chest/bust shots, ass shots, etc.

Fanservice can be subtle too!
