VGLeaks Durango specs: x64 8-core CPU @1.6GHz, 8GB DDR3 + 32MB ESRAM, 50GB 6x BD...

Have a hard time believing that Microsoft would push a video game console on the board room instead of just using the PC version of Kinect hooked up to a PC, which is something they've already marketed to meeting room type situation. Why would they want to sell loss leading hardware to a demographic that won't buy any games to make up for the losses?

Sales guys aren't really the most reliable when it comes to rumors and gossip.

But maybe it can run business apps too! Or maybe boardroom types might want to play Fusion Frenzy 3, hell I don't know!

I cannot see any serious business buying a Xbox360 for video conferencing. Some of the more advanced polycom's cameras automatically detect then rotate 360 degrees and record whoever is talking at a table.

Inception:

Kinect 2.0 to spy on Orbis specs.

Maybe you can buy Kinect HD separately?

It would probably be easier to just buy a Durango with Kinect bundled instead of setting up a PC for those purposes, especially of those apps are native.

Well, yeah, there is that. You should never believe the words that come out of a sales guy's mouth.

It does sound like a reasonable claim. Skype integration was a given. So was a 1080p version of Kinect. The Lync integration is interesting, but if that means I can work from home just sitting on my sofa, then I'm all for it.

Assuming W8 stuff on the Durango, Kinect apps for it would possibly work for any W8 device. You could have a simple portable Kinect video conference system by plugging it into a W8/RT tablet with a video out to a projector or something. How does $150 compare to dedicated video conferencing hardware?

Because the next Xbox will be about more than just games. MS get healthy revenue and profit from Skype. Which is why you get Skype integration in pretty much everything these days, from PCs to phones to consoles to smart TVs. Lync would also be a revenue stream for them. The full version sees MS as a VoIP service provider.

The bandwidth discussion in this thread is...interesting.

We had our Microsoft Gold Partner come in yesterday to show off (and try to sell an implementation for) Lync 2013. Lync is pretty much the corporate version of Skype, with full integration with Outlook, Office, Sharepoint etc.

The main sales guy mentioned than the next Xbox will ship with 1080p Kinect and have full integration with both Skype and Lync. He suggested that the next Xbox will find a place in boardrooms, due to its native, high quality, video conferencing abilities. He was worried, as they're also a partner / reseller for Polycom.
That is genuine interesting stuff. It would be really cool if Microsoft ends up making another (more mature) push into mainstream for the industry like Wii did last gen. And no, I am not equating Durango to the Wii (except in the sense that it has the potential for broad appeal). I guess I am the only person who hopes that they succeed at reaching this broader market that they're targeting.

Meeting rooms already have PC's set up in them and video conferencing is pretty standard these days. The Durango with Kinect doesn't offer anything that already isn't being done by Microsoft currently for the corporate customer.

Isn't the ESRAM limited to a few functions like AA and achieving a resolution bump, for example, because there is only a 32MB to draw juice from?

Nobody knows at this point in time besides insiders.

You would need Orbis level bandwidth to pull off something like this:

So Microsoft is definitely up to something to not gimp Durango for Epic.

Well here's something I'm wondering. If Unreal 4 has a voxel based lighting system, would that require more memory then it would processing power?

Seeing as how Epic games had a big influence on the final specs of the Xbox 360, it wouldn't be surprising that they are doing the same with the next-gen xbox.

Epic, Dice, Crytek, 343, Rare, Lionhead, Remedy probably worked MS hard sometimes in late 2011.

I bet the same thing happened with Sony over the 2 Gb RAM issue, although with different devs. I expect both talked to DICE a lot though since FB2 is going to power pretty much all of EA's next gen games.

Cool info.

Lync (even current Lync) is one of the best Microsoft products that noone has ever heard of. Was working from home the other day and couldn't make a meeting, and Lync was so freaking seamless in sharing screens, documents, and teleconferencing... I was in awe pretty much the whole time that a product would work so seamlessly.

All those studios, you would think MS would come up with some amazing machine.
It's not like no one knows how to create an awesome machine, it all comes down to bang for buck. What do you want to do, who do you want to sell it to, and how much are you going to sell it for? What that would really imply is that Durango will not be missing out on any third party games (surprise?) because they know what kind of machine they need.

I've never heard of it, but I don't doubt it. Microsoft is always on the ball with that sort of software. I bet putting it right there next to Skype (and possibly being better) will make it a lot more popular.

I still think Durango will probably be neck and neck with Orbis once the final specs hit. There's gonna be something to balance out the ram bottleneck or they wouldn't even put the fucking system out. It makes no sense.

Well it's always a fine balance between different needs.

The reason they went with 8 GB of DDR3 is due to their OS goals. The design of the system seems to try and mitigate the bandwidth issues through data move engines and ESRAM, but at the end of the day they are working with a less than ideal situation with bandwidth which is a direct compromise for a larger pool of RAM.

They'll be fine, but the bandwidth delta between Durango and Orbis could mean a rather significant difference in performance.

I don't think Durango will be bottlenecked by bandwidth.

Just design your GPU to max out your bandwidth and esram.

I'm pretty sure Kinect being used for video boardroom conferences isn't exactly the kind of info people were hoping for.

No but its a good confirmation of what we already knew. The jump to the full resolution system that was hampered by the older USB throughput.

What would be best if people didn't instantly assume that if something doesn't fit their perfect idea of what one of the consoles was going it doesn't instantly mean the world is over for their own hopes for a system.

Not meaning you by the way. Just...well everyone who does that.

OH and here is another vote for Lync.

Didn't say they haven't. But the rumors aren't lightning up my imagination :P

If there are multiple machines, maybe we have only be getting specs of the low end one....

not to mention the fact that the "rumors" are specs from a year ago.

i'm pretty sure there was also a user on here like last year that said that Microsoft basically listened to devs and was going to give them everything they wanted.

I was crazy impressed with the full integration. We already have a VoIP system that does the phone side of Lync. Shame, as it would have been sweet to just us Lync for everything. The integration into Outlook was sweet, and the variable bandwidth codecs for the video was really impressive too.

I'm far more interested in learning about the non-gaming side of the next round of consoles. Mostly because FLOPS, ROPs, CUs and the like are all pretty theoretical and meaningless until you see actual games in motion.

I *hate* Kinect as it stands, due to the lag and the low rent Wii Play knock offs that it plays host to. But Kinect 2.0 has so much potential.

The question is who sent out dev units first? Sony or Microsoft?

Who will be this generation's "baseline" spec?

It's no secret every multiplatform game is developed on 360 and ported to PS3. The only people utilizing the extra horespower in PS3 are Sony first parties.

So assuming MS got back out in the lead with kits to developers, what will it matter if Orbis is more powerful? Or Durango is more powerful? Multiplatform games will look the fucking same on each platform yall, nothing will change.

All next-gen games will look great, period. It's going to be about services. Here is where MS could potentially fall flat on their face if they continue to lock down the network with more restrictions and/or over burden users with ads, or simply fall behind in what PSN has to offer.

Or both Sony & MS completely get side-swiped by Apple, which is what I personally anticipate.

I know you don't mean me but I just want to say that I actually think that the Durango goals are going to suit the market a lot better than Sony's. While I, and probably a lot of other gaffers, would like both consoles to be focused entirely on games the market has shifted far more toward apps, multitasking, and other features. MS has that market cornered. People are jumping to conclusions about Durango's power too quickly. Even if the assist modules don't make up the power gap with Orbis it's still a big jump, just a bit more modest. There are gaffers that say that they won't buy a console without party/cross game chat. You can bet that MS has some more features of that caliber planned that both gamers and casuals will love.
