I had no idea Nomura was borrowing so much from FF12 for Versus…..

Hrm.

If does end up similar to 12, my excitement would go up a few notches. With exploration and random & rare drops, I could easily tune out whatever weird story they're going for.

Uhh.. Luminous Engine does exist already. It's probably not that far from being able to be used in actual game development, given that at E3 they'll show Agni's Philosophy running on actual next-gen hardware.

I could be wrong, but at this stage of the game (i.e. 8-14 months from potential next gen launch) isn't Luminous much further along than White Engine/Crystal Tools was at this period in 2006?
That was my understanding, but again, I have nothing to back it up.

From that and some of the scenario descriptions it seems like Normura wants to make Versus XIII more similar to XII in terms of story. Didn't they say the main character's family was set up sort of like a Yakuza family?

my understanding was that Versus is supposed to be Nomura-Does-Shakespeare... which has kind of frightened me from the start.

Fortunately he has Nojima around to keep things in line... unless they've secretly let Nojima go in favor of the Dynamic Duo® (Watanabe & Toriyama), lol.

People are seriously wasting their time basing their expectations on this old info.
Not really. This "old info" are the few major changes they did when they were still very early in (pre-)development and it's the way they've been developing Versus ever since they made these design changes. Nomura hasn't hinted that they've made any other big changes since then so there's no reason to expect things to be majorly different from the 2011 trailer (though, Nomura HAS said there are still some really big things that have yet to be talked about in any degree from Versus, he made it sound like "it has multiplayer" big, though I'm not saying Versus will have multiplayer).

Whenever we see Versus next, it shouldn't be TOO MUCH different from the January 2011 trailer. It'll probably look more polished but other than them tuning/finalizing the combat system and graphics getting some improvements (the 2011 trailer build didn't have the lighting engine from Luminous implemented yet), that should be a somewhat good representation of what the game will be like.

I do wonder if this is being delayed to nextgen, at this point...

Didn't the trailer say "Coming to PlayStation" and not "Coming to PlayStation 3?"

Yeah, they certainly wouldn't.

Well the first point is kind of irrelevant, because that almost suggests there couldn't be games ready, but we all know where will be, at launch in fact, mere months after the system's announcement. And Sony themselves have been making PS4 games for a couple of years already.

The second point maybe I'm missing. Why would you assume it's moved engines?

The third point is the strangest. Why do they need some huge heads up? They've had two years in the complete dark, just making it 1080p and 60fps with extra sparks is certainly going to look very pretty. It's not like they'd rebuild all the assets. They can't just keep bleeding money over this project.

What's the point of moving it to next gen if they keep the graphics quality the same?

They're certainly not gaining any extra sales. In fact they risk losing them if the new platforms sell poorly.

And converting it to a next gen game sounds like a great way to keep bleeding more money into the project. The smart thing to do is to just hurry up and release it for the ps3.

From the beginning of this project, it looked like Nomura wanted to make, "The best Square Enix has to offer: The Game"

Hope to see it sometime this year...

Nope.

Kagari do you work for one of square enix branches ?

No, but I work with them from time to time.

Anyway, Hashimoto - the game's producer - is the one who said it would show up this year.

Seems a user over at FF-Reunion was able to speak to Hashimoto today regarding the report from earlier. They asked him if it were true that Versus XIII would not be at TGS as per what people were saying online. To this he replied, “That’s right, I’m sorry…”

This news comes from Shar, a fan who attended the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary event, and apparently had a chance to speak with Hashimoto himself.

“I spoke about a number of things with Mr. Hashimoto today. It looks like Versus won’t be at Tokyo Game Show. They’re first putting all their effort info FFXIV and the Lightning Saga finale.” Shar later added, “He said that we’re developing it, so please look forward to next year.”

It's risky, but if you trust in your project, then launching with a system could make it even more successful.

Yeah, they've been doing work on Luminous Engine for something like 2 or 3 years now. You can't really even speak about WE/CT and Luminous Studio in the same sentence. White Engine hardly existed at that point, whereas Luminous is now very far along (I mean, it's one of the first next-gen game engines to be shown off, so going from Crystal Tools to Luminous is a huge jump for SQEX)

Yeah, IIRC, there's some real-life Yakuza tragedy that Nomura has also said he takes some inspiration from for Versus' story.

What do you mean by 'the same'? How is it the same if it's not the same? Making a game prettier is really not some huge financial investment, hence why publishers make DX11 versions of PC games.

Not gaining extra sales is arguable, although yes, you'd certainly be just moving many of them.

It's really not going to cost that much more, but it's not about the cost, it's about the viability of releasing it on the current systems when it's still so far from release. When is this game shipping? November 2014? A year after we've moved to new hardware? How ancient is it going to look? How many people are they going to lose, especially if the new systems aren't backwards compatible?

Moving it isn't about selling more, it's about being able to sell later, because they clearly aren't ready to ship it any time soon.

I can see them changing the title to FFXV just to keep the tradition of 3 mainline titles to each generation.

No worries, I never bring archives back to the table to do harm... unless if it's actually warranted, as in to expose liars or some such.
Oh, I want you to bring these back. It will add to the meltdown value. And I'll drop another bomb after that.

Works both ways tho. Even if I really do dislike the "hate" you unwarrantedly generated, I won't use archives as backfires towards the guys, for their doubts are legit granted Versus is the matter at hand here. I only dust archives to expose actual bad guys, as in cynical liars. Last time I had to do that was three weeks ago, and it worked pretty well since the guy had to demote and ban me from his forum in "response".

Not going to stealth brag and derail the thread any further. Check out my profile if you want to know more. You can also shoot me a PM.

I thought this was a necro'd thread..

this game doesn't exist no matter what Kagari, Squeenix or anyone else tells you.

LOL, I see you're at it again. Still willing to bet your account on it?

I was picking my jaw up off the floor after seeing that A Realm Reborn trailer for the first time, and I thought for certain that the Square capable of doing something like that was long dead and buried.

The same thing happened when I saw that huge versus gameplay trailer for the first time.

I believe him.

It's still my most excited game ever since it was announced at E3. However since games like GTA V and The Last of Us are actually coming out sometime I tend to pretend this game doesn't exist.

For some reason the game just intrigues me so much. For the following reasons.
-Like said in the OP the world map is gonna be massive, and I remember a few screens in the summer of 2010 where it showed Noctis in front of a gas station and you can see an entire landscape behind him. It was barren but I do believe that by now they have made it interesting. Airships make a return since the world is big enough to traverse in one. You can travel in car or chocobo. Also I love the fact that the main city is based off Tokyo and the rest are based off Renaissance themed building and there is reason to why (however that is another point)

- Kingdom Hearts style of gameplay. Kingdom Hearts have some of favorite combats in any game out there. It's fun, flashy, and sometimes a bit challenging. Having this type of gameplay will be make it fun.

- The story and characters. Even though we know very little on the characters and story, the very basis of what we know already has me more interested than most other games out there. A prince of a kingdom that is advanced in technology thanks to them holding the last final Crystal (which is reminiscent of the older FFs) while the other cities are still stuck in medieval times. Noctis so fan seems interesting and even though most seemed to think he's some emo Sasuke, he's actually a cocky fucker with a shy side. The fact that most of your party members are guys is pretty cool because it feels like an entourage, not that I don't want female members, it's just they my bros you know?

This pretty sums up why I want this game so bad. Hopefully we hear something soon sometime this year. Also I doubt this will be a next gen, doesn't that undermine all the years the team has been trying to perfect the use of the PS3?

I guess it is appropriate that I post this here. I am never one to post false rumors or speculation, but I can reveal the following from a source that is 100% reliable and has brand new information. If this turns out to be false within the next few months, you can ban my account and that of my children's children. Actually, it won't even take months.

Source asked me not to reveal specifics, but the game IS coming soon and WILL be shown soon. Tons of progress has been made to rebuild most of the game from the ground up and when people see it, they are going to understand the reason for the delay.

Game will not be called Versus anymore...so put two and two together and you'll understand what's going on. This IS the future of where all FFs are going in terms of look and gameplay.

Anyway, reveal soon and it will be glorious beyond all of our wildest dreams. Those who kept the faith alive were not in vain.

EDIT: Also, the information revealed by one of the previous leaked sources is 100% accurate.

I've held faith in Nomura all along, still I guess he must have been the one to want the name change given how stubborn the man has been in the past.

It will be weird not calling it Versus XIII anymore.

Already said it several times, but 2015 is my fan-boyish speculated guess for the release date. That would be ten years after it all began.
