Pachter -PS4 will feature "hyperrealistic games" and "render games at 240fps"

How many fps is real life?

Our eyes do not "see" the same way that computers render graphics. Because of this, it's essentially impossible to calculate "real-life FPS".

People saying there's no discernible difference beyond 24FPS are bullshit liars. People who say that there's no discernible difference beyond 30FPS are bullshit liars.
Beyond 60, it may be less noticeable to many people, but the difference is still there. Beyond 120? More difficult.

On Tuesday, I'm taping a show dedicated to how GAFfers are (mostly) smart and are (mostly) assholes. It should be fun.

Yes, I always wonder what will set GAF off, and this was truly an innocent comment. To be honest with you, I have no idea how many frames per second the human eye can process, am pretty sure it's more than 60 fps, since we can all see the difference between 30 and 60, but I have no clue if we can see more than 120 fps, or if we can even see that. I was merely explaining to Cliff Edwards that four times the processing power would make the machine capable of rendering at that speed. I have no idea what the games will look like, which features they will incorporate, but my guess is that the specs will be sufficiently powerful that developers won't be particularly constrained from getting the look and feel that they desire. As one commenter pointed out, PC games have once again moved past console games, and each new generation of consoles allows the consoles to partially catch up.

GAF usually reacts if I comment on technical specifications, charging more money for anything, or make any comment that has the word "Nintendo" in it. To answer your question, I always presume that if I talk about any of these topics, GAF will go ballistic.

And as you pointed out, I'm amazed at the asshole factor on this website. The asshole/civil ratio must be 2:1 or more.
At least we're not GT.

Edit: BEATEN!

could only muster up 30fps.

But gaf told me closed boxes with less GPU power could do so much more than Star Wars :(
Why you say this to me gaf?

Seriously though; am surprised that wasn't running at 60 at the events. Never struck me as good looking as some claimed :/

Come'on people let the hype get started. Remember the PS2 and PS3 hype? Exact same stuff. Let's just hype this shit to eleven and help Sony sell some consoles so that third-parties can make some good games for us.

Are you new to the internet? No offense to you, but this should be the least of your worries. It amazes me how personally you seem to take all of this.

Patcher is pathetic. Isnt that trolling? Shouldn't he be banned?

If you say something stupid people are going to point it out. If on top of that you are an analyst, people are going to point and laugh.

I actually find NeoGAF on the whole to be a nice community, we're just not assholes because we disagree with you. Don't get so upset.

Actually the human eye can only 'see' 12 images per second. But because the eye has a problem with perceiving two images that come extremely close to each other, more fps are needed to perceive a 'fluent' image.

There's no real maximum the eye can see. 60 fps can look better than 120 fps if the rest of the image plays nicely with your eyes. We don't really need 240 fps, as better lightning and AA will do sufficiently.

Eyes don't work by "frames". We perceive light changes that's all. See this a brightness gauge. The higher the contrast in color, the better you will see and notice something.
Per example, its possible to see 1 completely black frame in a 1000 fps completely white video. So it's all about having a FPS in a movie of game that as smooth as possible. The smoother it is the better. 24 fps or 30 fps is FAR from how "smooth" we perceive real life. 60 fps is a point where it starts to fool most eyes.

Then maybe you should stay on Gametrailers if you don't wanna be called out for constantly false and/or hyperbolic predictions. I imagine your audience there is much younger, still defines their life through videogames and hence just loves to hear why the PS4 will be awesome, Nintendo is doomed and why PC gaming is redundant.

Yup.

Oh crap, I'm agreeing with Pachter.

To be fair, the asshole/civil ratio looks more like 5:1. It really depends on the topic.

Yes, in fact, I said that the new processors would be "capable" of rendering at 240 frames per second. I didn't say "FPS", know what a frame is, and know that most movies are shot in 24 frames per second.

You're free to disagree with me, perhaps we'll find out in a few weeks when Sony announces a new console. Although I agree that the viewing experience will not be materially improved at 240 frames per second, I'm pretty sure what I said is right, and that the new consoles will be capable of rendering at that speed.

The problem with this is saying they are "capable" in a vacuum doesn't mean anything. I'm pretty sure the processors in current gen consoles are "capable" of rendering Pong at far above 240 fps.

It might help your case a bit more if you didn't try to speak so definitively when you were asked to be an "expert" especially on tech stuff, which is obviously not your area of expertise.

As for people being "assholes," I don't disagree that they are often unfair to you, but let's be honest, you egg them on a lot of the time. You pre-empt anyone disagreeing with you by referring to them as "fanboys," "flamers," "losers," on a regular basis. And it doesn't help your case when you pull numbers out of thin air like when you said "The PS3 is a pretty powerful box, and it is probably more powerful than 90 per cent of PC's out there. The 360 is probably more powerful than 85 per cent of PC's out there." Or when you say thing that absolutely make no sense like when you said RTS games don't work on consoles because they are "single player and turn based."

It's not just picking on you, any random person any gaming forum would get called out for that kind of stuff. You just have a bigger audience so when you get called out it happens by a lot more people and a lot louder.

Pacher is a degenerate old man.

Why he has gained so much attention from gamers is beyond me.

This is the same guy who said that more expensive games is good for the industry. It's thanks to men like him that Dead Space is releasing with 10 different DLC day 1.

FPS by itself is not a gauge of power. In context I suppose you mean run today's console games @240FPS? (which isnt true either but fuck it I cant be arsed to get into this)

You're so awesome. Swoon. How about you stop acting like a primadonna and actually start taking notice as to why you're not that well revered on these boards.

Please explain the FUSE guesswork you're doing. No seriously, you need to back that ludicrous number up with SOMETHING.

Please explain to us how you can actually do this for a living, how anyone can take you seriously even after you've been proven wrong so many times. Or do you get up in arms and "make a show" about everyone that questions your numbers and guesswork?

Please explain this, while you're at it:

"Pachter guessed at an October 23rd release for GTA V"
From GTTV in april 2012.

"GTA 5 Release Date Will be Announced in November Says Pachter"

"we continue to believe that Tuesday, October 23 or Tuesday, October 30 are realistic dates for GTA's release"
http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/...e-will-be-announced-in-november-says-pachter/

"my guess is that it’s coming out March"
http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1637968/gta_5_release_date_has_to_be_before_march_31_pachter.html

"we may learn the launch date next week." (this is from the day before the release date was revealed)

"Pachter added that he continues to "expect a launch in May""
http://www.videogamer.com/ps3/gta5/..._be_announced_on_february_5_says_pachter.html

EDIT:

This is an excellent post and brings up many of the reasons why I don't particularly care about Pachter. Especially the belittling of people that don't agree with him.

He's found a way to make money from being famous like this, don't know how but given his track record with predictions I wonder how this will turn out.

I really wish someone made a GIANT compilation of all this guys predictions that came true.

His right/wrong percentage would make him the worst weatherman ever.

Didnt he think we would be discless this gen too? or discless by 2011...

That's a fairly flimsy conclusion that just by multiplying the power by 4 gives you 4 times the performance as it's a lot more complicated than that. If you take a car and increase the horsepower to 4 times its original output it is not going to go 4 times faster and the same is true with computing. Lots of other factors such as bandwidth and even other aspects such as OS functions just as gearing or aerodynamics with a car.

Honestly if I was unsure or felt unqualified to comment on such technical details I wouldn't mention anything on the subject.

What you say makes sense for games with low graphics that don't have to use much resources.

But I would be careful what you say about GAF in your next video, unless you want GAF to explode, then the asshole/civil ratio might turn into 3:0 instead haha.

Hyper realistic is a catchphrase that has been bandied about for decades in the industry. Games on PC now run upwards of 240fps.

Where is the nonsense?

Running last gen games on more powerful hardware isn't really a accomplishment. It's just means technology moves fast.

No one says he has to. The nature of the job is that you will be wrong a whole lot more than you'll be right. but he has the most absurd predictions ever. However he reaches his analysis is a seriously flawed method and needs to be reworked because as it stands, he gets paid to say random shit. he can't even back up how he came to these conclusions.

Getting paid to work should require one to actually do work.

I saw one of his videos that shows us that he works a LOT more than some people, he doesn't seem to have much free time. He's probably overworking more than not doing work.

Will load times be cut?

A big change in graphics isn't needed; games are beautiful. Sure they'll be more beautiful on the new systems - that's inevitable - but, to my mind, what the next generation needs is improvement in UI on the OS level (particularly to make things easy to find) and improvements in load times. Nearly instant Access to apps; nearly instant shifts in games from start-up to game-play and between game-play areas.

Yeah, the topic is very important. In gaming community threads it's way more peaceful because the participants all like a particular game for instance and there will be less dissent.

And stuff like the Media Create sales threads are much more civil than a random "Nintendo is doomed and should go mobile"-like thread, even though they basically cover the same topics.

With an increase in RAM and higher res textures and higher detail... Expect load times to be longer.

Keep on doing what you're doing. Even when I disagree with your predictions I always find them entertaining (and the reactions you get.)
