I fast forward through an entire two or three hour movie. I'll skip to the first scene "Nope", then the next one "Nope" and on and on it goes until I find something palatable.

You mean free as in the content can be found online for free or free as in people are actively producing and distributing that content for free? Because I could name a whole lot of industries for the former and I'm not sure how much of the free porn out there was intended to be distrusted like for the latter.
I suspect that porn is a lot like Free2Play videogames, where almost everyone pays nothing but production costs and budgets are covered by maybe less than 5% of users that actually pay. But those 5% of users spend so much ridiculous money that it makes the entire venture worthwhile.
That said, I imagine that plenty of people pay for porn. People with particular fetishes that are underserved by streaming sites, people that waat high-quality or HD video, people that don't want to sit around waiting for particular scenes to be uploaded to a torrent service. People that are looking for a particularly obscure actress who only has a couple scenes on streaming sites but many more scenes on paysites. If you view porn as a commodity and don't care about video quality or a particular actress or a particularly good style of direction, then you'll never pay. If you can't find what you want for free, you just move on to something else that's not as good.
Plus since the death of Empornium and then PureTNA and then Cheggit, it seems like there's a vacuum in the porn torrent world that has left a lot of people wanting. There's no real central depository for all the pirated material, so I assume some enthusiasts just end up paying because they cannot find what they want on the dozen minor torrent/streaming websites that are trying to fill the void.

Im talking about how any reasonably hot couple with passable tech assets can be a competitor. Im sure gaf will agree amateur stuff is often better than the produced stuff

Video games: FTP
Print: websites
The pirated to legit free content ratio in the above industries is probably much healthier then the Porn industry.

Yeah, it's complicated. I'm hetero and I use it amongst my friends and friends of friends, and it's fine. But used as a slur it's definitely not okay. That's the general rule. There's a contingent who prefers the more specific LGBT term, but those people are few. I've only ever met one person who expressed offense, and it was someone in their fifties, from an older generation of queer politics and feminism.

I don't believe in paying $30 a month to have access to a site but I will occasionally buy a full movie. Mainly from Triga because I have a thing for scummy looking UK guys and they tend to pick the best ones.

I paid for a sub to FTV once since everything was available for download. The owner had a limit on the site but it was something huge like 25gb a day so I ended up with over 500gb when I canceled.
Youtube: You telling me there's a West Wing equivalent one Youtube? Cause if there is it certainly doesn't have the following West wing does.
Music: But it's the same content. Unless you're a hipster and trying to get something no one's heard before it's the same content.
FTP: They're usually anything but. they will get you with a micro transactoin at some point. And even if they don't they tend not to have production values as pay 2 play. And even if they are that's the problem with porn the more it's heavily produced the more fake it is the less it's appealing.
Print: That's actually a fairly good point, especially in the game "journalism" area. You have behemoths like Kotaku and IGN producing content that's frankly not as good as a lot of amateur reviewers. That's another industry I'd like to get into. That and blockbuster. I'd love to try and save blockbuster.
As to pirated stuff. I get your point. There's not much content yet but look at camgirls. All it takes is someone to come up with a porn video website that pays the submitters based on views and then that youtube vs. redtube problem will go away.

My point is that most porn sites are overwhelmingly misogynstic, play up rape culture, and conversely don't emphasis consent enough -- which I find shitty. They are also super heteronormative and just plain normative -- which I find somewhat shitty, but also just one dimensional.

Haha....I haven't paid for anything for well over 2 years, but I definitely know the feeling. You find some actress that completely does it for you, but she doesn't do anything for many other people so nobody has uploaded her stuff to streaming sites or torrent sites. Then you google "her name" and find that she has all kinds of awesome stuff hidden behind a paywall on some site. You try googling "her name + torrent" and all it does is turn up two dozen false results that lead you to spyware, malware, and other kinds of shady bullshit. 95% of people probably give up and just go watch something else, but a dedicated few will actually pay to see more of her stuff.....and that's where the money gets made.
Plus at this point I think most streaming sites are in cahoots with paysites, allowing a couple full-length videos of a particular girl, but not allowing the streaming sites to post newer or better content that features the same girl. So many times you find the same clips again and again on every streaming site, but if you want something better it's only on the paysite. Most people will settle for watching the same free video of the same chick again and again, but a certain few will convert over the the paysite so they can view different content.
I also imagine that the paysites at this point are Search Engine Optimization masters, and they rig it so that Google Search results are filled with bogus links and shady bullshit. So eventually the average user has to either give up or start paying for the official site.

Haha. I said I downloaded it, not that I had watched it all. I wanted to get my money's worth so I downloaded as much as I could and have been watching it over time when I feel in the mood for some 1080p goodness. Most of the clips are hundreds of mbs in size so it's not as much as it sounds.
But by and large youtube and independent production doesn't go up against hollywood studios. Hell you see a porn video a GAFer made being as popular as professionally made videos. In youtube you might get a viral hit or a psy but with the consistency of a network show? Come now. You're just being contrarian.
But again that's the thing. It's a mass market. It's the general tastes you're going for. Sure their's always gonna be hipsters but they don't account for the general consumption populace.

Speaking of that, I'm in the totally ludicrous position of remembering a girl from clips back in the day, but absolutely haven't seen any clips/movies of her in like 8 years and I don't know her name. I've even tried scouring pics in iafd to try and find her, but no luck at all.
There are tons of channels that get millions of hits a week. Not everything on Youtube is "you go viral or you go nowhere".
I am by no means a master of Google-Fu, but if you can at least get a girl's first name and the website she appeared on, then you have some hope of finding more of her stuff. Most sites watermark their videos so it's not hard to get the site's name.....though you may have to pay attention to the audio of the video to get the girl's name.
Plus I think there's plenty of streaming sites that host "Who is this girl?!" videos, where you can upload something and the resident mega-perverts will tell you the name of the actress.

I, like kittens, have serious ethical issues with a lot of porn. I'd rather spend my money trying to support actual good porn than to save $20 wanking off to Brazzers videos I torrented. Given the small percentage of stuff out there I truly enjoy, and the struggle most of those directors/performers go through financially, I want to give them my money. My partner and I drove like 800 miles round trip to go to a workshop put on by one of our favorite performers/directors. It was worth every minute and every penny.

I don't think you can plausibly claim that YouTube really competes with the movie and TV industries, beyond the claim that there's only so many hours in a day and more people are starting to spend more time with YouTube than they are films, DVDs, and TV shows. But in that same sense, Facebook and Angry Birds are also competing with the film and TV industries.
For long-form cinema and full-length episodic content, YouTube cannot often rival major film studios or television networks. Netflix's recent efforts with House of Cards and Arrested Development are probably the first time that a web-based provider has really tried to compete with traditional entertainment industries in terms of length and production values.

Yeah, I know. The long version of the story is I remember seeing her back in the early aught's on those clip sites that mainly linked to preview videos of paysites, back before tubes were around. The problem is I don't know her name, I don't have any of her clips saved anywhere (even checked my old computer), and I haven't seen her on any sites in years.
