Microsoft making at least four new IPs

One thing to note is that these "new" studios stay dormant for a long time before shipping a title, for example 343i started in 2008 and Black Tusk in 2009. Another one is Microsoft Studios Victoria, which is headed by some ex-Next Level Games staff.

But then you look at those studios Black Tusk "shipped" Microsoft Flight, and even Soho released Kinect Sesame Street TV. So it depends on if they learned how to make studios gel quicker from birth from the likes of 343i

I got a sense that MS' trajectory of first party releases eased off during the life of the 360. That might be because certain releases chimed with me but, hey, I can only speak from my perspective. The last one that pushed my buttons (and it was very timely) was Forza Horizons.

Bring me more Crackdown quality. And bring it more consistently.

I'm off to do some research.

Why the mockery about MS first party lineup? Its not like sony first party are stellar. Their last great output was journey and uncharted 3. But i guess its quantity over quality around these parts?
Because they have some well established studios. Sony Santa Monica, Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital, Media Molecule and Guerrilla Games behind them is nothing to scoff at.

MS Vancouver had a bunch of projects and teams: Flight team, Casual team and the Black Tusk team. Flight team is still there, the casual team has been laid off and the Black Tusk team got the greenlight last year.

I thought the flight team and casual team were one and the same and reviewed the Project Colombia and laid that team off.

EDIT: So does that mean there is still two teams at Black Tusk?

Yeah, the some of the Flight team left (on their own terms) but still a few people left that have probably been moved to Black Tusk project.

Creative Directors that work for Microsoft that are a liaison between the them and the developer would make sense

That's the producers' job.

I want to see them take on the crimson skies IP as an uncharted like tps.

Please, no. You already have Dark Void, and it's made by the guys who worked on Crimson Skies. I want a real sequel or perhaps an RPG with flying sections, kind of like Panzer Dragoon Saga, only more action-oriented in combat.

Don't think that can happen. MS has licensed all the old FASA IPs back to Weisman.

They still own them. Everything depends on the details of the deal, but it wouldn't be without precedence for two companies to simultaneously release games based on the same IP, especially if one of them owns it.

What new IPs has Microsoft created during this and previous generations?
...Forgive me for not being even remotely excited about this.

MS didn't create any new Core IP this gen I think.

I guess Viva Pinata is the one?

Crackdown?

They started plenty of publishing deals (ME, Too Human, Gears, Alan Wake, etc). Unfortunately due to the changing landscape (studios being purchased for example), everything hasn't worked out as planned it would seem.

I want to know if David Braben will go back to The Outsider. It's what Frontier were working on before it was put in hold. I've mentioned it before I know, but the info I read about the game was ambitious but awesome.

This gen was clearly about building third party relations for MS. Xbox was hideous in that regard. Now this one will be about maintaining those relations while expanding their efforts. They've come very very far this gen. But no more will the daily questions be about DMC, FF, Metal Gear, RE, GTA, etc. coming to Xbox.

Kameo.

Bunch of Japanese games: Blue Dragon, Ninety-Nine Nights, Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery.

This generation, not counting XBLA:

Kameo: Elements of Power
Gears of War
Ninety-Nine Nights
Viva Piñata
Blue Dragon
Crackdown
Mass Effect
Lips
Lost Odyssey
Too Human
You're In The Movies
Ninja Blade
Alan Wake
Kinect Sports
Kinectimals
Kinect Adventures
Kinect Joy Ride
The Gunstringer
Every Party (Japan only)

As for the previous generation, count them yourself.

Seeing as Black Tusk is making a new IP, it would not be too suprising that the Redmond team also gets a stab at a new IP.

Redmond is most likely working on Windows 8 stuff.

But there's a good chance Victoria is working on a core IP since they are expanding.

Also don't rule out Twisted Pixel, they have 2 teams now...

Were you born in 2009?

Right, I was born in 2009.

Crackdown?

Does MS own crackdown? Man I forgot all about that game. Yeah they were pretty aggressive with publishing deals early on, but they don't own any of those IPs.

I still can't believe MS simply let Mass Effect get away, yikes.

Kameo.

Bunch of Japanese games: Blue Dragon, Ninety-Nine Nights, Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery.

Do they own any of those IPs?

This generation, not counting XBLA:

Kameo: Elements of Power Yes
Gears of War No
Ninety-Nine Nights Is this owned by MS?
Viva Piñata Yes
Blue Dragon Is this owned by MS?
Crackdown Is this owned by MS?
Mass Effect No
Lips ?
Lost Odyssey Is this owned by MS?
Too Human No
You're In The Movies ...

I'm talking about IPs created by MS. Which would imply owned by them.

Also, I was very specific when I said "core" ips. I'm sure you understand I wasn't talking about Kinect Joy Ride.

MS owns the Lost Odyessy IP and i am pretty sure Blue Dragon as well. Infinite Undiscovery was funded by MS originally as such i am pretty sure they own the IP for that .( Square just published it) And yeah Crackdown is an MS IP as well.

Yeah, according to wikipedia MS owns all those. Weird that Infinite Undiscovery was published by Square Enix, what the hell.

I stand corrected then, MS created:

Lost Odyssey
Infinite Undiscovery
Blue Dragon
Crackdown
Kameo
Viva Pinata

That's much more than just the one I was talking about. In the grand scheme of things though, MS hasn't shown any type of interest in following up on most of these IPs. Aside from Crackdown, they were all one offs this gen.

I will wager that Twisted Pixel will mainly develop "Arcade type games" for the Xbox and Windows 8.

Pretty sure EA locked up Bioware right after ME1, Microsoft never even had a chance...

They did have a chance at buying Bizarre but blew it.

Of course they had a chance, MS needs to start owning IPs. What's the use of a Gears of War or a Mass Effect in the long run when at anytime they can be snatched away.

IMO, MS needs to learn from Sony and start locking up those IPs.

If we are talking just first party then that would just Viva Pinata,Kameo and Crackdown right. I thought Viva and Kameo were great games; they should of made it into a franchise. So sad to see what MS had done with Rare but it seems that the majority of people who consisted of the old Rare had left. I do not know why Ms put Rare on Kinect. They clearly deserve better.

Viva Pinata had a sequel, Kameo had a sequel in development and I'm pretty sure Blue Dragon did as well ...

If anything at the start of this Gen MS found it hard to market Kameo and Viva Pinata games ... pretty sure they could market these games better to the public after the marketing of the Kinect ...

They didn't own Mass Effect to begin with, it was always Bioware's IP and it was also released on PC simultaneously with Xbox. Tell me how they had a chance...

Yeah you stand correct when you turn "how many IPs MS created this gen" into "how many core IPs MS created and owned this gen and didn't got a sequel"

lol

And if they got a sequel, then its milking the franchise.

They didn't own Mass Effect to begin with, it was always Bioware's IP and it was also released on PC simultaneously with Xbox. Tell me how they had a chance...

I think ME1 got a 6 month exclusivity on X360
