Mass Effect and DMC have very different fanbases. ME has a very mainstream fanbase. DMC has become the go to series for far more hardcore and zealous gamers. DMC has also been around for way longer.
There are people who bought ME3 who didn't even know or care about the ending controversy. On the other hand DMC fans were pretty militant about minor aesthetic decisions like hair color.
Well, they're going out of their way to tell other people how displeased they are. They have no obligation to support the direction taken, that's for certain. Saying the fans are doing it "out of spite" is kind of like saying Capcom went forward with the reboot "out of spite"; neither would be particularly accurate.
When you leave bad reviews for a game you haven't played, before release then yes you are doing it out of spite. (Not YOU per say)
