Blu-ray Disc Discussion thread: Release Dates & Cover arts *No 56k*

Since the PS3 will be a full blown Blu-ray player out of the box, I'm sure this thread will interest many. Blu-ray got off to a horrendous start with terrible transfers. In the last month, the releases have been excellent. And now we're finally able to see what the Blu can do in full 1080p High Definition.

Check out: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html for current and future releases.

What changed exactly and are the HD-DVDs still clearly better or is it about the same? I'm not following the format wars so I'm just asking out of curiosity.

In terms of picture quality, they are same now, when comparing titles released on both formats. MI3, Unforgiven, etc.. It will be interesting to see if studios supporting both formats will take advantage of Blu-ray's extra bandwidth and capacity.

Wow ... X-Men 3 sounds like it's getting some good treatment.

Movie and all extras are AVC ... and the audio is 6.1 Lossless DTS.

Me likey!!!!

Once BD50 becomes more common ... then you will likely see more content ... and higher bitrates.

I really like the amount of Lossless titles coming out already though!

the thing is that HD-DVD camp is already out with its best movies line-up, while BR camp is still holding out its big guns like Spiderman, Pirates, James Bonds, Narnia, X-Men. Once these big-guns out on the market, HD-DVD is history

When is Sin City coming out? It's already aired on HDTV so the HD master is out there and I still haven't watched it because I'm waiting to see it in full HD glory.

Wow, Fox is really stacking them up pre-PS3. For a 'rush' release, Xmen sounds pretty great on paper too. 6.1 DTS ES HD Lossless Master Audio, eh?

i've been buying my first batch of blu-rays in anticipation of ps3 -- just got the mission impossible set, and i've preordered black hawk down and kingdom of heaven. amazon's running some promotion where you get 10% off all hd movies for a year if you order three hd movies. looks like unforgiven is vc1 on a bd50, and it's an awesome movie, so i think that'll be my next purchase. tbh i'm more excited about blu ray than ps3 games right now.

that would be the first vc-1 bd50 movie right? any reviews on the release yet?

XMonkey

lacks enthusiasm.
Black Hawk Down already looks pretty damned amazing for a DVD, so I can't imagine how the BR disc will look.

And wow at 2001 on BluRay, can't wait for that :)

Also, "hypothetical-age":

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=481509

Currently, HD-DVD players are in the lead due to longer market presence and higher availability of units (?). Yet the numbers are not high at all for either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players. Could this mean that Blu-Ray can become the leading HD format with the span of a few days? (Blu-Ray/PS3)

Christ, that's gotta suck for Toshiba.

LotR: Extended Snorefest edition, eat your heart out!

Here's a real super length movie that's actually become cohesive, intelligent and quite excellent to watch with added footage!

First Blu-ray movie I'll be picking up, without a doubt.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/new..._The_Last_Stand_Gets_Blu-ray_Rush_Release/335

In what Fox hopes will be high-def's trojan horse of the holiday season, the studio has fast-tracked 'X-Men: The Last Stand' for Blu-ray release in time for this month's launch of the PlayStation 3.

Though the studio has not officially announced the title, Steve Feldstein, senior VP of marketing communications for Fox Home Entertainment, revealed to Home Media Retailing that the studio plans to rush-release 'X-Men' on November 14, three days before the worldwide launch of Sony's next-gen game console.

"The demographics between 'X-Men' and PlayStation 3 are a near-perfect match," said Feldstein. "This is the biggest new release yet for Blu-ray... PlayStation is by far the dominant game platform, and this should put questions about format wars to rest."

While we're not convinced that one single title can bring down rival HD DVD, Fox is certainly pulling out all the stops for what is sure to be a flagship title for Blu-ray. All of the disc's supplements will be presented in full 1080p high-definition video, including 12 alternate and deleted scenes, a Marvel Comics "Pop-Up" animated trivia track, two audio commentaries, and more to be announced.

'X-Men: The Last Stand' will also include a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer of the film and a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 6.1 surround track.

Fox has set a suggested $39.98 list price for the release.

I won't be surprised if they did, but by early next year the whole format war will look a hell of a lot different than it does today. ~2m or so BD players in NA, versus maybe 100k HD-DVD... Of course not every PS3 buyer will buy movies, but that's hella lopsided nonetheless.

Hey, companies that aren't Fox? Look at how Fox is doing its cover art for Blu-Ray, AND COPY THEM! Stop adding goofy-ass graphics that cock up the cover art!

Thanks for the heads up. Just did the 3-order deal myself. Went with Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven Dir Cut, and Syrianna.

Now I just hope I'll have a Blu-ray player when they arrive :(

It's a Dimension Films company which is owned by the Weinstein's who are HD-DVD only.

Guys, do NOT expect 2001 on either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD any time soon. That version was announced alongside a 2 Disk SE of them movie. It was announced and planned to be released a few months ago but disappeared after its initial announcement early in the year.

It is more or less canceled for now/MIA.

I liked Sky High, too.
Especially the part where
the kid discovers his super strength and his dad gets him an Xbox.
In the theatre when that happened I yelled out
"I get it now! He can lift it!"
