Alright, that's it. It's over. It's ****ing over. The format war is done.

Walked into a local shop of mine today to unexpectedly drop my jaw at what the guy's were playing on their gorgeous display set:

Two minutes in and that was it. Killer app confirmed. Megaton in the flesh.

I don't care what you think about the film
so long as you acknowledge the fact that it's one of the best films made in the last 25 years
, this is a must buy for every PS3 owner and HD loving individual on this board. No questions, no more discussion. Just buy it. Find a place to import ASAP. Hell, fly to Japan if need be. Just do it.
i was looking for a place to import it but the only place i found was selling it for like 70 bucks

Anyone know where i can get it cheaper?

is it possible to watch blu ray titles in 720p?

Yes. All standard Blu-ray players can play in 720p. PS3 blu-ray playback was initially set at 1080p/720p. Sony decided to lock it to 1080p/1080i. Stupid move since many people with 720p sets have terrible scalers. You always want to match your display's resolution.

Hopefully, this is something they're working on for the march update. They can do it anytime if they wish. I think their main goal right now is to get the online bugs worked out.

Waht's the word on the quality of the transfer?
Because after Black Hawk Down and more importantly Kingdom of Heaven I'm very jaded. NOt going to buy the first release if its a shit transfer only to have to fork money over 8nmonthes down the line for a new one.

BHD and KoH have shit transfers??

No, nonononononononon.
They have AMAZING transfers. So much so that I am officially declaring any transfer not up to the bar set by those two (mainly KoH) completely un-watchable.
Innocence has some ****ing amazing scenes in it and would look crazy with a good transfer so I'm asking if it meets my new standard or if I have to wait until the do the inevitable "special edition"

I can't see why everyone says KoH has such a good transfer. I watched about 30 minutes of it and thought it was kinda meh, plus the movie was incredibly boring IMO so I couldn't sit through 3 hours.

Maybe theres some more amazing shots later in the movie?

any news on a us release of innocence? i'm on the verge of spending $70 on the import here. but that's madness, and as soon as i place the order they'll announce a domestic release for next week.

Word I've heard is that US anime distrobution companies aren't going to be bringing over any HD anime for a long, long time because they think the market for anime HD is ridiculously small and they won't recover on costs.

Though that's mainly talking about multi-volume TV series so movies still may come over. I expect Disney to release the Ghibli films in HD once they start coming out in Japan (Gedo Senki/Earthsea should be out early 2007).

That being said, Innocence is pretty meh and at $70+ I would personally never dream of buying it.

i just ordered innocence. :x i had a $15 play-asia coupon i wanted to use, and i was preordering salamander portable, and i'm kind of an idiot. i really like the movie, though i guess i'd rather have the first one.

ghibli movies in hd would be omgwtf.

Except Gedo Senki won't make it to the U.S. until at least 2009. :(

...which is true (ADV in particular wants a winner first, and I don't blame them) but in cases like Innocence, that doesn't matter as much because no anime distro company is involved. Dreamworks doesn't have quite the same pinch on their economy. Of course, if we rely on them, expect a release with no dub or subtitles. :lol

Ah. I haven't really kept up on who had what for the US rights.

Well, the first 30 minutes are pretty dark as far as where the movie takes place, but later on when it moves to more daylight shots the quality really stands out.

Out of all the Bluray movies I've seen, I would say MI3 was the best looking just because I think the style they used really shines when you watch it in HD (the oversaturation/vibrancy of the colors, and parts with really intense lighting and contrast).

Well, typically the big movie only stuff gets caught by a movie studio, eg: Innocence and some of Satoshi Kon's stuff by Dreamworks, Cowboy Bebop by Columbia, Fox had Totoro for awhile, and so on. In the case of Innocence the first release disc had no dub (though Manga UK did one with whomever the english regulars are) and no subtitle either; viewers had to use the closed captioning track. Sort of the definition of straight-to-disc, I guess.

Here's some screenshots of Ant Bully and Crank on Blu-ray.

The colors are unreal!

Some are saying this might be the best looking high def disc available. And a great action flick to boot. If you even enjoyed Transporter, you'll love this one.

Damn that looks great. And that fake Star Wars Episode I cover just made me like 100x more excited for those movies on Blu-ray. Episode III will look nuts.

Is ant bully a sequel to Antz or something? the art looks similar.

Anyways, those shots look pretty damn good. I'll probably pick up crank. :P
