EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

It just dawned on me that the purpose of Kinect is to enforce the new anti-secondhand game policy.
Using Kinect's facial recognition tech Kinect will determine if the person in front of the camera is the original owner of the game. If not then Kinect tells the Xbox not to run the game and alerts Microsoft.

How is that a solid security measure? It's easier for Microsoft to use their protocols already in place to ensure the content is tied to the system rather than using shoddy facial recognition.

this might be your fantasy. you have some sick imagination.
It's a real patent, the problem is whether Microsoft will actually use it or not. Sony hasn't used some of those anti-used game patents they've had (yet), but at the same time requiring Kinect all the time is one step closer to enabling something like this to be for real.

People denied over and over again that Microsoft wanted to make the Xbox an all-encompassing set-top box when the original Xbox launched. "No! They say it's a games machine! That's all it'll ever be!" Here we are ten years later and that's exactly where they are.

Expecting them not to use real patents they have in hand, or not to follow through on one purchase/one console is foolish IMO. These things are coming. The handwriting is on the wall. Wishing these companies to be benevolent entities will never make it so.

Except they patent stuff just as much for "just in case", especially as patent trolls have repeatedly shown they'll patent shit they'll never use but these companies actually might. They don't want to get tripped up on that crap. Though this is a case I wish a patent troll beat them to the punch, just to scare them out of it.

Yes. I'm fully expecting this E3 to reach Sony 2006 levels. I can't wait, it's going to be epic.

Outside of the US, I can really see the next Xbox tanking if all these rumours come true. Seeing as the much touted list of services, DVR and cable integration will at best be sketchy in the rest of the world, and at worst, just not exist. As this is the case with the 360 now. So most of the world will be left with an expensive all-in-one multimedia box that only plays games.

E3 is going to be awesome.

People really believed that? Said that?

MS and Sony have both been pretty damn clear about this over the years.

As somebody who has not a shadow of desire for any of the consoles yet, this will be extra interesting.

You can't use a photo. It spits out lasers to sense depth.

What if I have a flat face ? Kinect is going to discriminate my flat face ?
I'm suing ms' sorry asses !

The mandatory Kinect does seem to align with previous rumours that they use Kinect to see how many people are in the room, for instance so that you can't watch movies with more than two.

The movie is starting ! quick, hide inside the cardboard box !

Was just watching Jeopardy and took a pic of the answer. What's the question???

When your product is an answer on Jeopardy, you know you've made it

um no they didn't. History revisionist?

Everyone knows thats why they got involved, so Sony wouldn't rule the living room. you know this.

Been thinking about this and I suspect they want to allow full installs without requiring a disc in the drive. Obviously this would require some sort of device registration, but it would be possible to have a de-registration option if you want to sell it.

If this is true than I'm going to be very sad for sticking with Xbox Live this gen when I had/still have the option to make my PS3 my main console :(

The used games thing is concerning only because I like to trade in my old games to preorder new ones. The Kinect stuff however Im fine with, I use my 360 as my media box anyway so if this can be an improvement with great Kinect integration Ill be happy. It probably wont be day one unless the games are there but I'll still by one for the house.

Edit:

*Actually I just remembered... if Xbox charges me for online play, hbogo, netflix again then I will never buy one.

Im fairly sure they wont make the console unplayable for people without an internet connection.....are you fucking joking?

It was the case with XBLA games, before they allowed for easy game licence transfers. It used to be a double tap kick in the nuts. Get a RRoD, return your Xbox for repair/replacement, then not be able to play your digital games offline.

....What do you take away from the phrase "always online"?

So youre telling me that Microsoft is making a console, that requires you to have an internet connection or the shit wont work, completely obliterates the market share of people who don't connect their consoles (like my nephews actually) and you actually believe that this is going to happen. Impressive.

People are taking Edge and other insiders here over your gut feeling, yes.

People need to accept that core gamers are no longer a demographic MS are chasing. Games are now far down the list of MS priorities with the Xbox brand (see the Metro dash update where the Games section was shifted waaay over to 5th position).

MS want consumers who will use/buy into the various revenue streams. This can only occur if all consumers are online. Revenue from games will make up a fraction of the combined Xbox revenue, now competing with Windows Apps store purchases, Live subscriptions, Skype calls and movie/music subscriptions and rental.

MS aren't stupid. They would have a clear picture of the buying habits of current Xbox users. The numbers must be there to show that Live subscribers generate enough revenue to block out offline consumers (consumers who are also likely to be key used game buyers - another area where MS don't generate any revenue).

Even that, there are more than just the "core gamers" that don't connect their console online, not cause they cant afford to but because their parents don't want them online. Those aren't core gamers, those are exactly the same demographic you're talking about. Like my nephews. This not only will cause them a lot of headaches from the soccer moms calling in every time the net goes down wondering why the xbox isn't working, to headaches for people who just dont want to connect it online. These people still exist.

You want to be in the hands of as many people possible, not obliterate a market-share.

There is no way this console will have a whole life cycle without an offline mode. Not gonna happen.

So why invest so heavily in creating 343i, Black Tusk, Soho Productions, MS Victoria, etc.? Especially if they don't need to chase them ... seems like a waste of resources.

maybe saying "core gamers aren't their priority" would get the meaning through better

The irony though is that core gamers are probably the ones most likely to have a good, stable (or stable ENOUGH) internet connection. Just look at how Steam's doing, even if you don't need to be always online for that you kind of need a decent connection to buy and play most games on it in the first place. I think it's this expanded audience that'd get hung up most on needing the internet, even if they're already using it on stuff like tablets or smartphones.

Which also makes this especially dumb: those tablets and smartphones DO work without the internet, and while they kind of have to given portability it still means people probably expect their devices to be usable without it so long as it wasn't out and out necessary for functionality like Roku.
