EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

Even when people talk about "people in the Midwest don't have access to broadband" it's nonsense. There are dish Internet providers these days that are pretty damn good.

I know because I see commercials for them all the time. HughesNet Gen 4 for example.

I don't think MS cares if a few million people don't buy the new Xbox because of always online. They are already in almost 80 million homes and sooner or later those people will eventually upgrade to the new Xbox whether they like it or not.

Why? I don't recall everyone who owned a PS2 eventually buying a PS3 and I sure as hell don't see Nintendo selling 100 million WiiUs.

Still. In the neighborhood of 30 million people weren't connecting their 360s to the internet for one reason or another.

When I was a freshman in college, I had no issues with connecting to Live on my original XBOX. But I knew a couple of people who couldn't connect their 360s two years later. Must have had something to do with how the dorm internet connection was set up. The college dorm demographic is not one MS wants to lose.

Why? I don't recall everyone who owned a PS2 eventually buying a PS3 and I sure as hell don't see Nintendo selling 100 million WiiUs.

Thanks to new factors like accounts, online friends, achievements/trophies, and such, I predict there will be more loyalty this generation (unless the companies really screw things up)

Yes, but not everyone needs online. Some are even lazy. You give people 2 options, one console with an always online headache and one with practically the same library of games and features without that headache, which do you think they'll pick?

Pretend in your head that there's a salesman at bestbuy telling soccermom1 these things, pros and cons, how playstation and xbox are practically the same, one needs internet, one doesnt. You believe she'll go for the always online console? I dont.

Do you have any information that proves it?

Argument from ignorance proves nothing.

Well here's a thought..maybe..just maybe...it's a simple question to find out if he had heard anything..since you know, Proelite is one of the main people who brought us information on next gen consoles. Shocking I know

So let the man answer and take off your over defensive attitude elsewhere. I rather not talk to or argue with Unofficial MS PR..which would be you

ps: feel free to google or use wiki to find out what over defensive/damage control/jump to conclusion/mind your own business/context mean :)

They are already in almost 80 million homes and sooner or later those people will eventually upgrade to the new Xbox whether they like it or not.
But if all of these rumors are true there is no compelling reason to "upgrade" to another Xbox in particular. Whats to stop people from shopping around and comparing features to the PS4, Steambox, PC or other alternatives?

No BC? Always online? No used games support? I'm also going to assume the Xbox Live Gold fee will still be there as well. None of these things help to transition customers from one generation to the next.

Why would anybody need to "upgrade" to a next gen Xbox, much less "whether they like it or not"?

MS doesn't have a monopoly on gaming, media, or the living room. We have choices.

Basically?... no?

I'm sorry for wanting evidence to back up statements made as facts, but a argument from ignorance isn't going to work on me.

Argument from ignorance is not a new concept... Argumentum ad Ignorantiam is latin for a reason.

Hehe it's definitely part of the fun :D I have read pretty much most of the discussion on next gen stuff on neogaf for months now. Opposing views and rumors are so interesting

@FordGT: seems like you lack comprehension skills since even after me spelling out the reason behind my question to him you whine on. So basically in great Kamiyas words..basically..do you eat shit?

What imaginary statement did I make exactly? Google what a statement means while you are at it :) please feel free to not waste my time

Pretty funny the way you speak of reading comprehension considering you have the grammar of a kid in middle school...

Unless Microsoft is holding a gun to their heads they can just upgrade to some other gaming system or streaming device, just as many people likely replaced their PS2s with 360s or Wiis this gen. And may well replace that 360 with an iPad and Roku/Apple TV.

If the no BC rumours come true, this seems crazy to me. MS would be losing a core incentive to upgrade from 360 to Durango. Same reason if you own an iPhone4, you're far more likely to get an iPhone5 than an Galaxy SIII. Not due to specs, but because you're already invested into the ecosystem.

But MS have prior history of using a product upgrade to block out digital purchases. The Zune came with its own music store that replaces the MSN music store. Anyone who had bought music from MS before found that it wouldn't work on the Zune due to DRM and MS put noting in place to allow it. MS wanted consumers to rebuy music.

The hell?

Yeah, I do think if Microsoft carelessly burns bridges there's no reason for consumers to NEED to stay with them, though I guess enough may have dumb friends who stay brand loyal and stick with Xbox anyway even if the PS4 makes more sense, and so tag along. I guess this is where marketing has to kick in and convince these people it's not worth it.

aww did my badz grammarz on an online forum hurt your feelings...

Considering you can't tell the difference between a question and a statement, I'm not even sure what level of education I should put you in to show how stupid that is. But then again, unlike you I'm not trying to cover up a huge fail of a moment :)

Like I said, stop wasting my time

Do you really what me to embarrass you?

Original statement:
Well as of now I don't know if there's anything in place for internet issues and the like or if MS is listening to complaints, but as it stands I can say with 100% confidence the console needs to be online to play a game.

Made a statement of fact with no evidence.

Replied to by Proelite:
Bookmarked.

Replied to by you.
Do you have any information that contradicts this?

You asked if the statement could be contradicted implying a argument from ignorance.

Kid, don't try to troll a troll, you couldn't hurt my feelings if you tried.

Dude, just like in the PS4 dual camera thread, you're just embarrassing yourself. What B.O.O.M. was getting at is pretty damn obvious.

Please don't also stink up this thread with your school boy 'debating' skills and awesome wiki linking.

I'm sorry I'm not the one that carried the conversation along, all I said was that even if there was no evidence to contradict the statement doesn't make it true.

What B.O.O.M "was getting at" is a logical in-fallacy that doesn't back up the statement, I was merely pointing it out.

In other words you were saying that if there wasn't a way to contradict the statement than it must be true.

umm yeah not sure why you are trying to embarrass 'yourself' here. I asked him a question. Unlike you Proelite and BG has been known to be a big part of next gen reveals around here. I asked a simple question from Proelite to see if he heard anything new which hopefully could be positive news for gamers. Yet here you are going all butt hurt over this.

If you had an issue with the statement BG made..take it up with him. Why reply to me? It makes as much sense as your blind faith in MS

ps: troll the 'troll'? Did you just call yourself a troll? Wow..it suddenly makes so much sense! phew I was worried you were serious with all this for a second there lol

I have no blind faith in Microsoft, considering most of the posts that have been made you can't blame me for assuming that your statement was to use contradiction to back up the original statement made by BG.

I have a lot of respect for BG, so I'm utterly disgusted that this is likely the real deal.

Online only is far less agreggious to me than no ability to play used games.

Honestly that alone doesn't make me question purchasing the system at all.

You guys seem to automatically assume this yet I'm as critical about Microsoft as I am Sony....

Actually I'm, as of now, more interested in buying a PS4 than a Xbox 720.

It certainly shows

Considering most posts? What does that even mean? What posts? lol I had been hoping none of this nonsense is true for ANY console from the start. Sheesh..talk about paranoia

Most the posts fired back and fourth from this thread, I was originally following this thread and the other EDGE thread from the begining.

I apologize for assume your original question's intentions were some way to prove a nonfactual statement through false logic.

However the way you replied to me could've been handled better also.

sony was in more home then that with the ps2....look were they are now. i know i will not be buying the next x box. i really like the 360 and the old x box. the MS without bill is doing everything wrong lately. they can lose the 80 million really easly.

This one.

Atticus Finch‏@hlm2nd

@superDaE do you know whether Durango will allow used games?
http://www.edge-online.com/news/the...hand-games-50gb-blu-ray-discs-and-new-kinect/

To which SuperDaE replies:

@hlm2nd Always online is not mentioned at all as of current. Its something Sony has actually talked about internally however.

Yeah they spent years wanting to be playstation. As soon as Wii took first place they dropped everything and tried to be the next Wii instead.

Their strategy just seems to be to ape whoever is in first place.

That's not the MS way. What is happening with Xbox is that the initial hurdle of getting the brand established has been successful (at enormous financial cost to MS). The brand was established on the back of games, but now they can aim towards getting the wider consumer market they've always been interested in.

We see now that the Xbox and Live brands are now migrating over to other services, not just on the console that host its name, but on Windows. The rest (as in, non-gaming) sections of MS will all want to leverage off this brand awareness.

I wouldn't be surprised if Xbox just becomes the standard brand for all online services on any MS platform. The Zune marketplace will be killed off (like MSN Music before it) and all digital distribution of entertainment services and software will be done through the Xbox moniker. App sales on all devices will be done through the Windows Store.

If Sony makes the move first, MS will follow too. We're screwed either way if this plays out in that scenario.

Hopefully they both opt out.

I can definitely confirm this I know Microsoft has even made statements saying that their intentions with Xbox were to get into the living room.

Zune marketplace is basically on life support with Xbox and will most likely die with the X360, Xbox Music is now the standard on Windows 8.

I agree with this. Over the entirety of the past generation I think the only time I ever played offline was when PSN shit the bed, and then it wasn't my choice. Otherwise my PS3/360 are always connected in case there's a patch, a friend online etc. I don't see either of them cutting out offline play if you have a license on the box. That's a head-scratcher.
