System Shock 2 Confirmed for GOG Release! Out Now! (Via RPS)

My question is: have they managed to preserve the CO-OP mode? It remains one of my favorite CO-OP experiences to date. Just an amazing experience but very difficult to use with modern machines (even more so than the game itself).

SS1 > SS2
Come on, really?

I mean, I played both games around the time they were first released and, of course, love them both but System Shock 2 delivers a better experience overall. SS1, even for its day, was always extremely clunky. It simply doesn't play particularly well and it lacks the scare factor of Shock 2.

It would be awesome if they updated the control scheme in ss1. Either way I'm there day one.

There's a mod for mouselook included in System Shock Portable, I'm sure someone will get it working if GOG releases the first System Shock (but if not, at least it's there in SSP).

Then a bit of tentacle action and some road hitting and I think we are doing pretty well.

Let's not forget about escorting VIPs in space either :)

I always take the gog version if there's an option because of the extras that are included as well as the lack of drm. Thanks for the news

BioShock is one of my favourite games of this generation.

I assume System Shock 2 is still classed as essential reading despite playing BioShock first?

Don't be like that, you know exactly what I mean. Steam is a library of all my games that I trust will be around for the long haul. It'll do a far better job then I ever will at keeping them available and it gives me a lot of peace of mind.

It will also give you a heart attack if it ever goes under.

With DRM-free it's up to you, with Steam it's up to Gabe.

all my PC friends cream over this title. Along with wizardry 8 this is the PC game I wanted to play the most. I'm so excited!

There are those who said this day would never come, what are they to say now?

'twas said of Doctor Who:

"There will always be 108 missing episodes"

(Since that statement was said in 2004... there are now only 106 missing episodes. Nothing is truly impossible!)

Very true but lets face it. When it comes down to me or Gabe, he has more than got his shit together.

It depends why you like Bioshock. I'm guessing none of those reasons actually apply to why System Shock 2 is so great.

Yes really. SS1 had a better story, better level design, better weapons, better gadgets, better music, no weapon breakdowns, no magi---er---psyonics, no experience poin---er---Cybernetic Modules. I think the graphics are more interesting and varied in SS1 then SS2. Every floor in SS1 is unique and interesting. SS1 had cyberspace which was an interesting chance of pace. SS1 even has an entire clone of wing commander. SS2 was good and had some amazing sound design but I'll never comprehend how people would prefer it to the original.

Ren and Stimpy dance....Happy Happy Joy Joy.

Now for another vacation to the Van Braun with my psionic simian friends.

So, are there any must-have mods that I should apply to enhance my experience? I don't want to install truly game-altering mods though, since this will be my first playthrough.

SS2 SHTUP (Shock Texture Update Project) - What it sounds like, faithful to original textures, lots of comparisons included in link (just scroll down), see for yourself.
Dark Engine Widescreen mod - Self explanatory once again, high-res + widescreen support.
System Shock 2.4 - High-res/widescreen support, tons of bugs fixes and other improvements, see link (thanks Stallion Free for pointing it out)
SS2 Schatten SHMUP (Shock Music Update) - Faithful recreation of music using higher quality version of soundtrack (in cases where original music arrangements were not present in soundtrack, original is left untouched).
SS2 Modmanager - If you want to start trying other mods (like Rebirth and so on).

There's a small chance mods may need to be updated before working with GOG's release, but it likely won't be a very long wait if so.

Edit: Additional one, thanks angular graphics!

System Shock 2 is probably one of my favourite games of all time so will definitely be double dipping on both of these! My CD's can stay safely in their boxes for the foreseeable future.

It always amazes me how advanced the feature set of SS2 was for it's time. I can remember at that young age of being in awe of what the future would bring - unfortunately the answer was streamlining more than anything else. :-(
