System Shock 2 Confirmed for GOG Release! Out Now! (Via RPS)

Patch creator doesn't have any rights to the patch he made afaik (iirc people said it was illegal as it used altered source code or something) so, it's probably safe for them to use it since they do have rights to that now...

It won't be possible. Sure, you could map the controller to emulate keyboard and mouse functions but the interface relies so heavily on the mouse that it won't be any fun to play. You'll just be moving a cursor around the screen with an analog stick in order to click on tiny objects and buttons. Does that sound like fun?

I still can't believe System Shock 2 was, at one point, being worked on for Sega Dreamcast (and, in fact, a very early build was leaked). I can't imagine how the hell they would have translated the game to a pad with so few buttons.

Oh... that sucks.

Installed on my Windows 8 laptop, game launches no problems, widescreen resolutions are there out of the box, videos play perfectly, this is so awesome. Seems to have 8xMSAA enabled by default in the cam_ext file.

So no need for the SS4 Tools thingy? Any mirrors for it that doesn't require signing up?

They probably would have done what so many other games do nowadays. Ripped out any form of gameplay that couldn't fit inside an 8 button window.

Since this guy below me doesn't know how to properly label a spoiler except to put a spoiler tag over the whole post, I guess I will have to do it for him. The post below mine is a huge spoiler for people who haven't played the game before

I assume it wasn't that big a deal to make some items auto-use rather than drag and drop and convert the interactive panels etc to being highlighted with the d-pad. You can't do that stuff with simply remapping buttons, you need to rework functions.

Yeah, I've heard speculation that the unofficial patch was created by one of the original developers. It was released anonymously to avoid the legal mess. Sooo I don't see how the new company can get in any trouble for using it.

Do I need to play System Shock 1 before I play 2?
Nope, the awesome plot twist is possibly more awesome if you're familiar with the first game but SS2 stands on it's own. To be honest IMO if you're more familiar with "modern" games SS2 is probably the better place to start anyway; it plays just like a modern game. SS1 can be... challenging to get used to.

No need if you just want to install and play vanilla. The GOG install works perfectly "out of the box". It appears to already be automatically packaged with the NewDark (v2.4) stuff so widescreen, videos etc all work without any modification.

Love the GOG wood shelf.

Wait a minute... XIII is in your list and went right to gog to buy it but I can't find it. Argh! How is that... where did you... WHY CAN I NOT HAVE WHAT YOU HAVE?!?

Edit: Was removed at end of 2012. Oh, why didn't I go look at gog last year. Idiot = me.

For those asking about SS1 I agree that it is not necessary. I played SS2 first and enjoyed it a lot. But it is also true that some minor elements in the game make more sense or have a “new meaning” if you played SS1 first.

Also for those who want to use a gamepad, note that when in the inventory menu the game is not paused so you are subject to being attacked while trying to use a gamepad to manage the inventory. This also applies to hacking etc.

I don’t like (or use) gamepads so I am not sure how much more difficult this will make it (if at all) but based on the comments so far I believe it would.

Some publisher fuckup. They put it down few weeks ago. Probably they will release it later. Though there were games like operation flashpoint and colin mcree rally which didn't came back.

I am baffled how DD license works.

I think it would be very difficult if not impossible. Certainly it would be very unwieldy for things like inventory management/hacking. The quick precision of the mouse is necessary IMO.

Hope its okay to ask, may someone pls gift me systemshock 2? If you're welling, send me a pm for my name on gog.

I think I'll try making a control configuration for Wii Remote + Nunchuk in Pinnacle Profiler. I played Arx Fatalis that way, so it just might work.

GOG deserves support and you can add it to Steam anyways.
I bought it on GOG the second it was available, stayed up and everything (East Coast). Love GOG! Want both! Want to support this and spread some money around. Problem is I have digital games spread across a billion different platforms and services and can never keep track of anything. If I have it via Steam as something I can actually download through them it makes playing it wherever I want much easier. I wish the dev's site never mentioned Steam, to be honest! Or that the RPS interview went into the exclusivity rather than just putting it in the headline. I know that GOG is as much to thank for this release as Night Dive, believe me.

I'm guessing that I can easily play this on my current 1.5 year old Dell desktop; 8GBs of RAM, Core i5, integrated graphics, etc?

Played through the basic intro just to get a feel for how the game runs. Haven't had a problem yet, game seems to run perfectly fine.

Loved BioShock, so I'm very interested to play this for the first time.

Will buy as soon as someone else tries it out under GNU/Linux and reports resounding success without a kernel recompile. :)

Preferably Ubuntu, but I'm flexible. :D

HUD scaling doesn't work right for me. It's either tiny when I don't delete the ; in those lines or huge so that it fills the screen no matter what numbers or specific resolutions I set. I guess I'll have to leave it huge.

Adding all the mods hopefully I've done this correctly anyway.

Will be interesting to see how this looks now I get to finally play it at 60FPS. :D

A few lines down you see "d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 640 480". Try playing around with those numbers at the end there instead (which is the HUD resolution). You might need to re-add the semicolon to the earlier rule.

I tried that, said it in the post you quoted, that's what I meant with resolution, not display resolution.

It was? I remember there being some kind of co-op thing but I thought it was a mod. maybe I mixed it up with "Synergy" for Half-Life 2. It was officially added later on right?
It was released without COOP but Irrational released an official patch which added the feature.

What an amazing feature it was!
