System Shock 2 Confirmed for GOG Release! Out Now! (Via RPS)

I'm guessing that I can easily play this on my current 1.5 year old Dell desktop; 8GBs of RAM, Core i5, integrated graphics, etc?
Yes, SS2 should fly on just about anything.

If you find you have bad performance though, edit the cam_ext file in the game directory and look for the line that says multisampletype 8 and change it to 0 or use ; to null it out. This release has 8xMSAA enabled by default (this option doesn't appear on the original boxed release, it's part of the NewDark mod). Your integrated GPU might just ignore the call for MSAA in the first place, though.

Huh. The GoG version doesn't have the preconfigured Unreal keybinding set.

Gotta do this manually.

@FastRedPonyCar, you're an internet superhero.

It's a game from 1999, what do you expect? :P There wasn't even 1gb of ram back then in home computers.

My PC when System Shock 2 came out was a PII 200mHz, 64mb SDRAM with a 4mb Diamond 3DFX card and an Aureal 3D audio card. I think anyone with a PC from this century should be fine.

Thanks. May try it out this weekend.

LOL I know, it was a pretty dumb question but I asked anyways.

Just ran the GOG version for the first time. Damn, they do such good work. No bells and whistles, it's just the same game I can install from my retail CD but with a proper widescreen aspect. I'll keep my CD for posterity but I'm glad I don't need to go through the 30 minute process of installs and patches to play it from now on.

Looks like they've added mouse wheel support and bumped the texture quality, insofar as I can tell.

Just bought this and played a minute to get it optimized. Really sharp looking game, especially for it's age. Can't wait to lose myself in this. Couldn't really get into Bioshock. Hope this sucks me in much better.

The audio logs will suck you in. They are far better than Bioshock.

Anyone know how to play in windowed? I tried changing game_full_screen 1 to game_full_screen 0 in the Shock2.txt, but it showed no effect on startup and reverted back to 1.

I see force_windowed in the cam_ext.cfg, but I'm not sure what to change if I can.

First time I'm ever playing this game and I'm kinda shocked how good it looks. I had a quick go just to set things up without mods, fully expecting my eyes to burn from the horrible graphics but nope, it looks really good. Might not even bother with the graphics mods. Is there any way to fix the ultra fast mouse movement though?

So does this just use the previous released fan patches like NewDark? In the RPS interview they said they had done their own work to fix compatibility issues.

There is a mouse sensitivity slider in the controls menu.

So current mods to use are outlined on GOG now here and simplified to just the two links below:

SSTool v4.8 - Highly recommended, updates SS2 folder with latest fixes (should fix fullscreen video errors, binding configs, etc - reports of it working by some, but may not be 100% compatible with GOG release just yet - though if there are issues probably will be updated shortly)
SS2 Newbie Modding Guide - Less critical, links to other suggested mods, such as SHTUP (better object textures), SHMUP (better music), and a few others.

And the useful information for making the HUD larger is here and/or here.

Seems the mods work great for some people and others are still having trouble, hopefully the issues are sorted out soon for those experiencing them! :)

I can't DL it. Anyone know of another host? I need that patch!

I need GAF help about this.

I'm running Win 7 and my language is set to French (Canada) and the game thinks I have an AZERTY Keyboard while it's in fact QWERTY. As such the key binding is a little messed up. The original game didn't have this issue while the GOG version does.

Is there a config file I can modify to remedy this?

Design Document #1
Part of Shock’s unique appeal is the fact that it brought the vibe of the Underworld dungeon crawl into a science fiction setting. Primarily, Shock was at heart a real role-playing game, not an action shooter. However, certain members of the press and the gaming public mistook it for a Doom clone, somewhat limiting the product’s commercial success. With Junction Point, we are clearly setting out to make a role-playing game, not only embracing the sense of role-playing that Shock provided, but expanding on it. Hence, the major design precepts of Junction Point are:

Pacing: Slow it down, baby.
Junction Point is paced like an RPG, not a Quake deathmatch. The player will be rewarded for carefully exploring their surroundings, examining items and approaching combat with a plan of action.

Persistence of World:
Like Underworld and Shock, the world of Junction Point is open ended and freely traversable. Junction Point takes place on the cramped decks of the USN heavy cruiser "San Francisco" as it plies its way towards Earth. Citadel Station felt like a real place, with its own sights, sounds and smells. With the technological advances afforded by DromEd, Act/React and LG’s exceptional audio we intend to raise the ante on immersion. As Junction Point is not a mission-based game, he the player will never be pulled out of the environment. They can travel anywhere on the San Francisco that their wits and trigger finger allow them. Objects they leave behind will remain there for the course of the game (unless, of course, somebody else takes them!). Destroyed things remain destroyed and dead things stay dead. This adds powerfully to the notion of immersion, as the player has free run of the environment. Of course, as the player is inserted clandestinely into the San Francisco with no way to get off, they are conveniently confined to our small corner of the universe.

Character Growth: The player character grows, not just their gun collection. The player character will, of course, obtain a wide array of new weapons, armor, and other goodies through the course of the game. However, she will also grow inside. As she is a burgeoning psionic (see psionics-, below) she will learn new mental techniques in the course of her explorations. She will need to, ummm, experience a certain amount of gameplay to advance her skills. The player will be allowed to focus (apply experience points to) their psionic efforts into various areas, such as suggestion, illusion, telekinesis, etc. The more they focus their efforts in a specific area, the more they improve their skills there.

Persistence of Storyline: Junction Point is not mission-based. It has an overarching storyline broken down into organic "chapters" that often overlap each other. The game will have an overarching storyline, but sub-missions will organically appear throughout the game. Some threads will block other avenues of gameplay (for instance, a key to a door that must be passed to proceed further in the game) and some threads are presented simultaneously ("repair a shuttle" and "reboot the security network") with each thread leading to its own portion of gameplay. This allows us to allow a player who is stuck in one aspect of exploration to proceed in others (an analog version of multiple mission choices).
Techno-Horror Tone: Junction Point tells a dark tale set in a very dark place. Shock provided players with a unique tension and suspense much more akin to Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil than Doom. Junction Point also is set in a suspenseful futuristic horror setting and introduces a number of themes and game mechanics that support this vibe. The storyline is a moody cross between System Shock and Apocalypse Now.

Desperate Gunplay: Like Shock, the combat in Junction Point will be quick and decisive. Most PC shooters are essentially games of attrition. Players can take dozens of rounds of
shotgun shells, grenades, and BFG fire before they even start feeling woozy. The gunplay in Shock was a much more decisive affair; it was crucial to get the drop on your foe and fire on him before he knew you were there. Junction Point will adhere to this style of gunplay. The player will be fairly vulnerable to gunfire and ammo will be difficult to come by. They will have to take their foes by surprise, make ample of use of cover and make every shot count. To reinforce this, the player will be rewarded for careful shooting by the fact that shots to critical body parts (head, heart, etc.) will do more damage than other hits. With non-human and robotic enemies, the player will have to find out the best places to hit!
Isolation: The protagonist of Shock was a vulnerable isolated character. This leveraged the horror/suspense of the story and provided a number of useful design tools. JP will continue the theme that the player is alone in a hostile world and that their only contact with friendly forces is non-interactive in-game cut-scenes (see ghosts below) which play a similar role to the logs and emails of Shock.

now imagine somebody strolling into publisher's office with this pitch nowadays
might fly with Ubi and 2K

No confirmation but it is believable imo as using fan created mods/patches in official releases can be problematic to both sides.Looks like some bullshit is going on....
GOG's Thief releases just had the darkengine fix already inserted into the folder which was also a fan made fix.

Soooo...does COOP actually work?
Isn't it just a direct connect to the partner's IP? I don't see any reason for that to no longer function.

I just made a back of the SS2 folder from a previous install with the 2.4 fix and the game starts up fine with that without installing anything. It's essentially thumbdrive ready.

so my eyes were not lying

Yeah, I beat SS2 again earlier this year, but couldn't get the textures to work with my copy (it flat-out refused to work on my AMD machine at one point, so I had to switch to my laptop--really buggy prior to 2.4). Seeing these is like a revelation.

They're very good, I can go either way personally. It gets a bit jarring when you see a monkey or something with the original model next to a "check out the rack not sure if want" cyborg midwife.

Thanks! This will be my first time playing the game so I want to stay as close to the original game design as I can but with better textures.

this has probably been asked a million times: any word on a Steam version?

this has probably been asked a million times: any word on a Steam version?

Yes, and answered a million times.

Steam will come later. No one knows when.

Double dip on this, it's worth it. GOG has a ton of bonus features like the OST, manuals, etc.

Just put a couple hours in. This game is already quite amazing! It's like they combined two of my favorite games of this gen, Dead Space and BioShock, into one package!

Oh...wait...

Woah, does anyone think the enemies attack faster than normal? Maybe there was something about the untouched ~previously abandoned~ version that had enemies with slower attack animations. Used to be able to dodge normal enemy attacks like nothing with the wrench.

How do the graphics hold out? I never played System Shock 2, but I was a huge fan of the first.
If you're fine with the likes of Deus Ex or Thief you should be fine here, it's definitely late 90s/early 2000s 3D. Plus this version makes sure stuff like Widescreen works fine.

With the patches and some tweaks it looks a lot like the original Half-Life in visual quality. Mods improve various things.

lol, just listened to the interview.

People don't change.

Radio host: So can we... like... play together?
Ken Levine: 4 (four!) player co-op
Radio host: FUCK ME SIDEWAYS IT'S AWESOME WE CAN PLAY TOGETHER THAT'S SO COOL WOWOWOWOWWSDOFSD!!!!DS

and in the other half of the interview they proceed on talking about co-op. In 1999. And people still argue that multiplayer isn't needed.

Also I like how Ken Levine is trying to sell them the game in the best PR traditions of nowadays: "yeah, you know people didn't really like these cyberspace sequences in SS1, they found them obtuse so we decided to streamline make them plot-related only but THEY ARE SOOO COOL". Good times. They also discuss Baldur's Gate. Co-op of course.

And in hindsight SS2 fate was similar to what Ken talked about in this interview but he talked about SS1. Almost prophetic.

The graphics are...not bad. Keeping in mind that the game is from 1999, it actually looks pretty good. You should definitely install SHTUP (upgraded textures). There's also the Rebirth mod that offers updated models, but that's a bit of a mixed bag. The site is getting hammered right now, but check out http://www.systemshock.org.
