System Shock 2 Confirmed for GOG Release! Out Now! (Via RPS)

I can confirm the multiplayer is still broken in this version, unfortunately. After a while it either crash or lead to a synchronization error that corrupts the save file once you did the prologue.

You will need a lot of patience to finish this in multiplayer. Saves in different slots all the time.

It seems they didn't retool that mode at all and according to the GoG forum the game is basically the NewDark fixed version.

So when I start up the game, I have 2 circles (recticles I would guess) in the middle of the screen. I played the intro movie and updated my controls and they are there the whole time. Anyone know why/how I can get rid of them?

It was but the original controls are a throwback to SS1 rather than a sign of the times. Don't forget that you can lean in all four movement directions and bind dedicated run and walk forward keys in addition to the traditional FPS staple controls.
Yeah, I just changed leaning to Q/E and put lean forward as, uhh, X (is that really useful in the game?), if use isn't on one of the mouse buttons then I'll just make it F or something. A lot easier to retool than SS1 I imagine.

Anybody else waste way way too much time playing Overworld Zero?

Nah, you can probably count on one hand the number of times you might want to lean forward over the course of the game. You can get some really deep leans by simultaneously leaning forward and to the side and then turning, but that's really just a novelty. There's no where that you need it.

Think I'm going to have to get on this.

As a potential side benefit... now that System Shock 2 has finally been made available on GoG; now they can concentrate on the new #1, Grim Fandango. Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi!

Damn, it rejects my card info when I try to buy it.

I tried, GAF. I did.

Some banks decline gog because they process payments in Europe. On my old bank card I had to call the bank and ask to remove the international block on transactions.

They are a subsidiary of CD Projekt RED in Poland and gog headquarters is in Larnaca, Cyprus.

Psi powers are all temporary but if you know what you are doing (basically second playthrough) then you roll psi ops. You are a god in 30 second chunks.

Definitely, the trick is playing strategically enough that you don't get killed during the other 4.5 minutes of every 5 minute chunk. The biggest pain in the arse is the final boss fight when you forget to save all your ICE Picks.

My bank has given up blocking me when I buy random shit from overseas. It's like they looked at the fact that the lion's share of my disposable income has been spent on the internet for my entire adult life and finally started to understand that I'm a highly evolved digerati.

Man, whenever I start talking about System Shock 2 I always end up going back to the one moment that completely sold me on the game -- finding that circuit board:

(For those who haven't played the game but don't mind very minor spoilers)
There’s a section where you need to modify a computer by switching out a circuit board. After a voice recording tells me the registration number of the board I need, I go find the room where it’s supposed to be, expecting a small room where the correct board is the only movable object. What I get is a massive library -- several stacks filled with circuit boards, each one able to be picked up and placed in your inventory. When I had to look at the registration number of each board until I found the right one, I said to myself “this isn’t a collection of levels anymore, this is a real place.”

Right now I'm trying to write a massive blog on why console gamers should give SS2 a shot. Also, if you end up playing SS2 for the first time and like it, there's no reason why you should not then investigate the original Deus Ex, Arx Fatalis, and Thief.

Brilliant post. I've played through SS2 more than any other game, and it still blows me away.

As buggy as it is, I'd add Omikron: The Nomad Soul to that list.

Yeah... by god I'll get it one way or the other, if not hopefully it makes haste to Steam.

So I just played for 2 hours after getting all my mods and tweaks done, really cool game. It looks like survival horror star trek in the best way possible.

So, um which of the 3 branches should I join? Does it matter?

As others have said Navy is the one that will make your life easier especially early on. This is mainly because of the hacking skills as it makes finding resources a lot easier. It also gives you an early start with standard weapons.

I never played as a marine as it never appealed to me but those are weapons experts so you get to use more weapons.

OSA is harder to play at the beginning but properly configured by the end of the game you are a god and it makes the end levels really easy except for the very final battle. Can’t say much about that battle but any of the three careers can have issues with it the first time but IMO the Navy will have the least problems and the OSA the most (on average).
Also note that any career can choose elements from another career path but it will cost more. So a Navy guy can learn an OSA skill but it will cost the Navy guy a lot more cyber modules (what you use to buy skills) than it would an OSA guy and vice versa.

Did anyone ever attempt some kind of weapon balance mod?
Theres a few like straylight Adaob. They try to make the alien weapons worth it but in reality the amount of cybernetic modules you have to waste into research will never offset the organic implants or the researchable weapons. Its just not worth it. Its the same for most psi abilities. A lot of them are crap.

how do I know if my mods are working or not?

This is strange. I can play the intro video by clicking INTRO when the game launches but none of the other cutscenes are working. The game just ignores them.

It sounds like a codec problem but I'm able to play that one video so I'm at a loss.

edit: Got it working. I have Windows 7 64 so I ran this at an elevated command line:
regsvr32 "%windir%\sysWOW64\ir50_32.dll"

this happens to me too though I don't really understand what you mean to do in the bolded above. a little help please?

edit: i guess this means my mods are working. looks pretty clean.

Just bought this off GOG. So excited to play it. Always wanted to but now that it's an easy set up I'm ready to go.

This game is tough. This is one of those games where you have to make careful use of your ability points and items from the start. My stats and items are a mess so I'm going to start fresh with what I know.
