The Wii U in a worse or better shape after the PS4 reveal?

Same as they are now, aka done for this gen. PS4 proved the new consoles will be a massive leap ahead so third parties will never show up, and it has more progressive social and online features than Wii U. It even has the gamepad remote play with Vita which is also a more impressive display device than the wii u pad.

Honestly, it made me a little sour on my Wii U, but I don't trade consoles in on principle.

I'd say it's in worse shape. Touchscreen doesn't seem to be as popular as waggle, and Nintendo's software support for it SUCKS.

By this point in the Wii's lifetime there were several very FUN titles that you just couldnt pull off on a traditional controller. And it was family oriented, you could use 4 of these NEW controllers and have 4 people play.

Thus it was very marketable, and very appealing to many families.

The Wii U doesn't have any appeal like that.

PS4 is just aiming to be the next step in traditional gaming, something Nintendo should have aimed for. Thus as it's seen as the first big leap, people will migrate to it.

And if the total sales of all next-gen consoles shrink, it'll be mostly due to Nintendo's failing.

About the same. Nintendo and Sony both do it's own thing. The reveals (even if Nintendo screwed it up) show it off quite obviously. Nintendo tends to focus on gameplay while Sony games are more presentation oriented. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's the main reason why people prefer the one or the other.

You do understand that having nice presentation doesn't automatically mean that the gameplay suffers, right? I know this has been the N fallback argument since, well, a while now, but it's been a dumb argument for just as long.

Great point. It also seems that alot of peoples expectation were brough down to earth.

I think Nintendo is a good position to have great sales and games. They just have to push these games out and it seems that Nintendo has the best way to getting directly to their fans with Miiverse.

Well, going by that line of thought, it's a good thing we know Durango will be even less capable than PS4.

Do you even think before you type???

Done meaning what????

Discontinued??? 8th place???

And about the Vita remote play, you need a Vita and lag might become a big dealbreaker in that "mode".

I bought a Wii U on release day. I'll buy a PS4 on release day.

I believe the Wii U is in worse shape. The PS4 feature set is simply amazing. The Wii U has some amazing titles in the pipeline, but I'm only interested in them because of the console exclusivity. I just want new iterations of my old favourites. I don't believe the nintendo hardware is much of a factor in this case. If the best part of the Wii U is the Off-TV Play and the PS4 can do that with a Vita. Part of me wishes I bought the Vita before I bought a Wii U.

EDIT: I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii U did get more third-party support because of development costs.

Watching the Sony press conference today I was thinking about the Wii U...

There's been a lot of speculation whether the Wii U using not exactly next-gen tech would hurt Nintendo with game support and with consumers in the long run. But to be honest, after seeing the conference, i'm not so sure anymore.

To the average joe, do these games really look that much better? Is the average consumer really going to want to upload his videos to the web and share them with all his friends?... I almost feel the Wii U has become a more attractive system after the press conference, especially if Nintendo is able to drop the price of the U by the launch of the next-gen consoles.

To be honest, I am not sure... it really depends on the development cycle this time around, the games that are offered and the price of the system.

I will not fool myself, what Sony showed was impressive... BUT, I am going to go out on a limb and say that it does look costly. I am not really sure that moving to X86 is as big of a benefit as it seems, but the RAM is than that might factor into a few more things... And there are quite a few variables in what Sony presented that have yet to be set.
As a machine that plays "The AAA experience," Sony seems to be ok... but that is not really what I want.
Call me odd, but I like Sony and Nintendo when they embrace that awkward weirdness that they got... I would like more experiments, more risk taking with games, game-play, features, etc. I didn't see that there (nor did I expect much of that), but I didn't expect that Sony would be playing it so... safe.
I am not really sure that Sony has given Nintendo a reason to divert their attention from their own issues with the 3DS and Wii U, Valve and the rumour mill around Apple.

E3 MIGHT change that, but I not really sure based on what I just seen yesterday. Sony seems to just want to deliver more of the same... which is not bad, but again... that is not what I want.
What I can say for sure is this... Sony will have to convince the consumer that they offer something great for the value of the system. Price of the device will factor into that greatly.
If everything is as rumoured (which given the accurately based on yesterday, is to be considered)... Sony will have a tough time with $400+ with what is, at it's core, a souped-up PC.

Nintendo didn't seize the opportunity to sell a shitload at launch for different reasons.
People are now focusing on the next gen hardware and functionalities.
N screw themselves with the bad launch and the non existent momentum for the WII U.

But basically upcoming games will make the difference , and there is nothing that says that Sony/MS will have better launches.

God dammit, the word "gimmick" really pisses me off. Way, waaaay too overused when it comes to video gaming.

gimmick - is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use.

The Wii and now the Wii U, use a "gimmick" as their main selling point. Microsoft may move towards using a "gimmick", as their main experience with the new Xbox (Kinect 2) but I think Sony has shown with the PS4, that their gimmick (Move), plays a very small part in their new system experience.

After having considerable time to absorb what Sony showed, I really think the Wii U might be hosed. They can't rely on just their hardcore fanbase who will stick around for the first party titles.

I think you'll find that this day might have kicked off a series of events that will lead to Third Party Nintendo.

Hmm I'd say it's too soon to tell tho Nintendo really needs to fix some issues with the wii u while they have time. That aside, I'll just sit back and watch lol.

Same for now, but it will be in better shape come the launch of PS4 and next Xbox when the Wii U is the cheaper system and has software worth playing (hopefully)

As cliche as it sounds I really think it's too early to judge. The PS4 presentation showed a lot of potential vs the wii u being a known product with it's strengths and weaknesses already laid out.

I honestly think miiverse vs whatever the hell they end up calling all the gaikai connectivity stuff will be the biggest thing. If Esports has taught me anything, it's that lot of people like watching other people play games just as much as they like playing them themselves. The ability to spectate or watch uploads from people who may not have had the ability to show off their skills before could be sort of key. If Sony creates an interesting community based around letting users become web stars it could end up more appealing than miiverse which is one of the things that really stood out about Nintendo's console.

You’re on a roll with your stupidity at the moment....

1) That's not particularly nice.

2) What new gameplay idea did we see last night, let alone the (roughly) twelve present in NintendoLand?

Nintendo is aiming for "second game console", which is how they positioned themselves towards the end of last gen. It's game console you buy when you (a) don't play games that often and want something cheap for parties or (b) want to play the odd Nintendo game once or twice a year (Xenoblade, Zelda, DKCR, etc).

Nintendo built the Wii U to compete with PS3 and 360, it can't compete with the PS4 hardware....8 gb ram, wow. It can't compete with the 3rd party games, it has none and does not look like much will happen in the future....at least it'll get inferior looking version of Watch Dogs.

So nothing changes, a few people will by Wii U for Nintendo games, if they ever decide to release them. Majority will go towards the PS4, or the Nextbox.

In the past evey console that has won is the one that has received the most games...and the Wii U will end up with the least games.

Where have I heard that one before???

The circumstances are much much different now. Nintendo was already in deep shit with third parties. Do you really think todays events helped things? They might have got Watch Dogs but once people see how arse it looks compared to the other platforms, that'll be it.

What a load of bullshit.

All these reactions are surprisingly similar to the PS Vita reveal not to long ago. Looks like Wii U is making a comeback.
I think PS4's high specs and fear of price also has something to do with it. $399 might be a pipedream atm...."It looks good but will I be able to buy one?"

A $300 or $250 Wii U will get eaten up this holiday season with a new 3D Mario

Something tells me you were saying the exact same thing in 2006.

And its ridiculous to compare remote play with the Vita to the Gamepad with zero lag. You sound ridiculous, Derrick.

Too early to tell.

I really could not see much of a graphical leap in the PS 4 games shown.

The main thing is the price. 8 GBs of RAM is not cheap, and if Sony does not learn from its "599 US dollars" debacle, then the PS4 is fucked and the Wii U will look like a better alternative to consumers, especially if Nintendo cuts the price this holiday.

Better.

As Sega discovered, it's much harder to fight the phantom of perfection--a hyped competitor no one knows much about--than it is to fight a real, plastic-and-silicone opponent.

Now that Sony has popped the cherry with PS4, we know that the two consoles each have their own niche to fill. While Sony's system is sure to impress hardcore gamers, I suspect it will cost significantly more than Wii U this holiday, when Nintendo's library will look more attractive than it does today.

People said the DS was doomed in the face of PSP. Same with 3DS and Vita. If Nintendo uses this year to position itself well for the holiday season, I think they'll be just fine.

After Sony's unveiling I'm still in the Vita - 3DS - Wii U - PC club! Bring on MS because this was a very flat unveiling by Sony...

Also E3 is going to be mad!!! Nintendo/MS/Sony will need to bring the goods because just announcing sequels and more shiny graphics will only get you a flat reception!

They are in the same position as before. We already knew that WiiU would be technically trumped. Nintendo have their own huge seller and time honoured IPs. They will be fine but will not do the same numbers as its predecessor.

About the same. Nintendo and Sony both do it's own thing. The reveals (even if Nintendo screwed it up) show it off quite obviously. Ah, the age old Nintendo defence. Until PS4 was announced it was all about how WiiU trumps 360/PS3 in graphics department and now it's about shifting the goal post to a more baseless assumption, i.e. prettier graphics = inferior gameplay.

Nintendo is in trouble and the writing is on the wall.

-inferior hardware
-little third party support
-gimmicky pad
-to pricey for what you get
-no big Nintendo IPs out yet

-the IPs that they do have are starting to get a little stale

ok.

This coming from someone who waited in line for the Wii U and currently has one at home that is collecting dust.

*looks back at list of negatives*

what?... why?

Wii U is in a better place to succeed with PS4 (and next xbox) on the market.

-More overall awareness and attention by mainstream by virtue of product launches

-Distinct price points with less distinct target demo - Wii U will thrive as the budget option for younger kids and more the casual audience

-Availability - By Holiday '13, Wii U will have had a year in the marketplace to optimize production and inventory for easy availability whereas experience tells us the brand new consoles will be tough to lock down

-Competition is healthy and provides opportunities to leverage competing PR

-More third party ports

I cant wait for Nintendo to show some big guns and people to flip flop back and forth. Its so funny. I wasn't that impressed with sonys show to be honest. It was a lot of talk. Doesn't mean much without product. Ill still get a ps4 but im waiting for more hard evidence before i get really excited

This is a good post. So many hyperbolic, ridiculous posts in this thread. The average consumer isn't going to go out and buy something because of "omgz 8gb of da ramz"

Nintendo did it all to themselves the day they announced the WiiU.
Yup.

It was a dud from the get-go. I don't know who the WiiU is aimed at because that monsterpad surely looks just as scary or more so as any traditional gamepad does to the wiimote-waving mom brigade. They have their ipads and iphones now, why do they need another games console, their Wiis have been collecting dust for a few Xmases now.

The WiiU looks like a toy to me. I haven't seen any games yet that would attract me to the PS4, but I haven't seen any for WiiU either and that's already on shelves.

No, they'll go out and buy the console which has the best looking version of the game they want.

the wiiU product is already undesirable to the mass market ...and it is now more undesirable. anyone who can't see that ... is just plain being obtuse.

Better
They're hitting on two different markets. Worse if ps4 has a similar gamepad and low price point but that's not happening

I'll give Nintendo a little bit of slack: The future of the Wii U (and possibly, their position as hardware producer) will hinge on their E3 presence. All eyes will be on them to return serve and I'm sure they know it.

If Zelda is not there in some capacity that resembles that tech demo, I reckon they're in big trouble. They'll make their own bed.

Yeah, i honestly don't get this. Not much time ago we had a lot of people saying how Wiiu would blow away the graphics on the hd twins (and till now we didn't seen it yet, but NFS already shows the way), but now that the Wiiu is behind again, people act like graphics don't matter? I mean, let's mantain the focus here. You either like graphics to the point of choosing between sku's or you don't. I think Wiiu already look great and i'm very satisfied with the console. PS4 looks much better, that doesn't mean every game on the PS4 will be a linear shooter without gameplay.

Nintendo is very competent at what it does. I'm sure everyone will get great games on the wiiu (so am i), but we shouldn't be hypocrites.

I'm really curious to see how Nintendo will do in the future. Assuming Microsoft goes the all-entertainment we all assume they are going to go, I'll support Nintendo and Sony NextGen. Don't care about Gears of War and Halo any more and Micrsoft seems to have nothing to offer aside from that.

You're right.

But that does the Wii U no favours. The Wii U is already out and the average consumer doesn't want it.

A lot depends on where PS4 Durango are priced at. A $250/300 Wii U with some compelling software can do extremely well this holiday and into 2014. If PS4 launches at >$400 and stuff like CoD is cross generational, I think we are going to see rough early adoption.

Just like how the 3DS was in a "worse" position after the Vita reveal...but look at it now.

The Wii U will be just fine.
