Fighting the Barroth for the first time was amazing. It'll kick your ass and teach you a bunch of MonHan lessons before you end up beating it. Probably on your 6th (or more) attempt. Good memories.. good memories..
I was really "afraid" of the Barroth with all the horror stories about him, but in the end it wasn't that hard. Had a much much harder time with Gobul.
LOCK-ON!? In MY Monster Hunter?
I'm the only member of my group that didn't mind fighting the Gobul. Even to this day, after a thousand hours of Tri, they still hate fighting him. I guess I'm special.![]()
LOCK-ON!? In MY Monster Hunter?
You just compiled the negative posts. There have been a lot of people, myself included, saying that they didn't have any major issues with the controls.
It was developed with gameplay-first philosophies.
First time really playing a Monster Hunter game. I have the Wii one that came with the black CC Pro that I bought for cheap, but only played the game for like 2 hours so yeah...
Was the hard dragon thing easier for most people? It might have been the weapon I used, but the bunny thing was kinda hard and it took me the whole 10 minutes to kill. The dragon thing went down pretty easily for me. I used the long sword on the easy guy and the dual blades on the dragon thing. Had fun though.
I think we should come up with a term for the "lock-on" since it's not really lock-on. Lock-mon? Mon-lock? Mon-view? Or instead of thinking of something clever, recenter-monster?
This is gonna be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyways: is there any sort of narrative to drive the player along? Even if it's just background lore and dialogue with NPC's?
Camera correction.
Sticky camera.
I still cannot get into this series , the combat just feels so sluggish. I don't understand how this became so popular in Japan.

Using the target lock on and double L tap to recenter the camera did away with any problems I had with camera control using the d-pad or digital d-pad.

I have no idea what I am doing in this game
Looks decent enough
How do you lock-on on the 3DS demo?
Because the combat is not sluggish. It's designed that way as opposed to how other action oriented games work. Expectations...

I understand where you are coming from. You need to change your style of attack. Try watching videos of others playing tri. You will notice how the melee types are constantly sheathing their weapons and strafing/ circling to find the right line of attack, roll/escape, then sheath again. Until you have amazing weapons that can easily stagger or know the movment pattern of a monster to know when to block (if the weapon allows it), defense should always be your priority, not attack. Save chain attacks for when the monster trips, or falls into traps. When i'm fighting the boss monster in the demo , my guy doesn't roll fast enough to dodge his rushing attack and when I try to counter with my weapon drawn I can't get close enough to him to land some hits since you can't run with the weapon drawn. Its very frustrating.
Yes.
And it basically is just (light) background lore and NPC dialogue.

Its a game that rewards mastery.

I'm just going to start copying and pasting. People should try reading the thread though; It's been asked dozens of times.
Clicking the monster icon on the touch screen changes the function of the L shoulder button. By default, the L shoulder button will focus the camera behind the hunter. When you click the monster icon on the touch screen the L shoulder button will instead focus the camera on the monster.
Thanks. What is a good starting class for beginners? Tried Sword and shield and blocking with the shield didn't really do anything. I still got hurt/knocked around.
SnS block is light. If you need heavy blocking, you pick Lance or Gunlance. They still can't stop very powerful attacks, but you'll get staggered much less.Thanks. Camera as expected is hard and makes me want the XL Pro.. which isn't announced for NA...
My only gripe is that there aren't any descriptions for the items given, unless I missed it.

When I was new to MH I found the more newb-friendly weapons were dual swords and longsword. They're not slow enough to force you to time your attacks as precisely, and they teach you that you need to dodge in this game. Greatsword has major appeal to lots of people but it just has a bit of a learning curve since most of the time you'll be doing an unsheath/charge attack, then resheathing and looking for another opening.
My personal weapon of choice is Switch Axe, which takes a little bit of learning but is great if you like the long range and fluidity of LS plus the ability to swap into sword mode.
For the new people, do bear in mind that with longer weapons like longsword and switch axe you need to learn to be mindful of your surroundings because once you get into multiplayer you will send your group members flying if you're not careful.
I posted this in the Nintendo Downloads topic before I saw this thread:
MH3U is great as expected, but underwater controls are absolutely horrible on 3DS. The controls in general are just so much better on Wii U (and I've been using the Gamepad.)
I managed to beat Lagombi on my first try. Did terribly on Plesioth on 3DS, got him to limp a couple times on Wii U before running out of time. All of this with Switch Axe. My one attempt at Plesioth with GS didn't even get to the limping stage before I was out of time.
I honestly think Plesioth is just a major pain when he's underwater and he stays there most of the time, at least in the demo. At least his hipcheck doesn't seem to hit things from clear across the map though.
The monster look button is a nice addition, particularly for 3DS where you don't have the luxury of a usable camera (which is what makes swimming so terrible.)
Can't wait to get the full versions next month.
