Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

If you're talking about the smoke coming from a monster's mouth, that doesn't mean it's injured. It means it's enraged. Monsters become enraged more often when they get closer to death. The difference becomes obvious when you fight a monster that rages easily (hi Diablos).

I didn't notice it in the demo, but certain parts of the monster will break if you do enough of the damage to them. Sometimes this has an important effect. Break Barioth's claws to keep it from moving so much, break a Barroth's ridge to keep it from using mud, cut off a tail with a bladed weapon to carve items from it.

You can also trap and tranquilize a monster to when its health is low. It's a bit faster than killing and nets different rewards. There's a skill that makes it easier to tell when it's weak enough, but it's obvious when the monster starts limp.

I did notice Plesioth's head appeared to break a couple of the times I fought him. I didn't notice any visible difference, but I smacked him in the head and he flinched and shards flew off, so I'm pretty sure that was a head break.

I'm guessing he meant the drool, which means a monster is low on stamina. For those unfamiliar with MH, at that point it will stand around doing nothing a lot, but it also might run off to kill and eat smaller animals, restoring its stamina. While they're drooling, you can also drop poisoned meat on the ground and they'll usually take it. I don't think there's poisoned meat in the demo though.

Whoa I didnt know the WiiU version framerate would be so smooth. Imo it looks nice and sharp.

Also MH is like riding the most awesome bike ever. You put it down for awhile, but once you jump back in, it's all good.

The WiiU gamepad works very nice once you get used to the layout again. And gotta love having gestures at a touch without fiddling with a menu. Long Sword is my weapon of choice of course, and now its Plesioth time. Wanted to carve up the Lagombi though. Are we sure thats supposed to be a rabbit?

Need to go back and mess with the GS.

Some of you...

Of course you sucks at MH, you just started playing it!

Just keep trying different weapons, strategy, etc until you find one you like, and eventually you will be joining us in a Alatreon hunt.

As someone who has played a MH game before I thought the demo was really fun. Its kinda funny to see some of the reactions here from new players and I do think the demo was't exactly beginner friendly since it just throws you into a huge fight without teaching you anything about the game.

The camera is good enough for me since a lot of the time just tapping the L button will be enough for hunts.

This thread is hilarious. It's just like the threads that were all over the internet when the original Tri demo hit. Fairly certain I was one of the people complaining.

These games require a little of your time and patience to fully understand and appreciate. It's very worth it in the end because this series is amazing when you know how to play.

Killed the Lagombi pretty easily with 4 minutes to spare. I couldn't kill the Plesioth though, even after 2 or 3 tries. I think it's due to the shitty underwater controls (not using a CCP for reference). I guess I'll be playing the harder missions exclusively on the Wii U since I don't plan to import a CCP XL. I think I've just been spoiled playing MHFU on Vita. Those dual analog sticks are so good.

I liked the auto targeting though. It makes it instantly more playable than the PSP games in some regards.

Is it me or are the fonts on the 3ds terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible?
You haven't seen horrible fonts if you haven't played Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii. The text is so small the letters blur together a bit (since it's in 480p). It's a fucking mess in that game and it's a massive improvement here imo.

Tried the Gunlance as I really wanted to try it. Fought Lagombi and didn't know what the hell I was doing with it, so I quit and went with lance, my main weapon in MH3. Because why wouldn't you use lance?

Don't knock the Gunlance too much. When you get the hang of it the GL can put out some SERIOUS damage. It even has the upgraded moveset from MHP3rd. Landing multiple stab/shell combos, unloading all shells at once a few times, or sticking wyvern's fire up a monster's nose will drop it real quick.

Breaking parts isn't really a good indicator of their HP. You can break parts off early on just by focusing on them. Additionally, I think there's a new skill in MH3U that actually increases the rate at which you can break parts.

Pay attention next time, you should see a huge scar.

Heh, I haven't played MH in years so I was fumbling with my hammer controls for a bit. The unfamiliar pro controller on the Wii U didn't help either. Few minutes later I'm landing hammer charges on Lagombi's head as he slides around. I think the side pound can stun again now, that's nice. Can't remember if they fixed that in Portable 3rd or not but it really sucked losing that move in Tri.

Plesioth is still a jackass though. I think I'll be making a fire/lightning HBG for him in the final game, for old times' sake.

I really hope they put in lots of options for audio in the final game. I don't want to be forced to use TV sound if they are reserving the gamepad/headphone jack for voice chat.

Demo on 3ds is awesome, looks great and plays well. I had no problem dodging and wrecking the Plesioth's shit with the hammer. For anyone complaining, this game is just like Dark Souls, the more you play and get used to the combat, the better you'll be. Day one. Will try wii u demo when I get home.

What's the best tactic for killing the Plesioth? I tried the sword and shield at first (and ran out of time), then I tried the light bowgun (aiming sucks underwater so I got my ass kicked). Is the hammer any good? I keep hearing a lot of people mentioning it.

I got him on the land in area 9 then hammer charge spun under him, totally messing his legs up, followed by the golf swing. pretty much evade, charge, then when he shoots the laser spin between his legs and tap y.

Only problem I have with the 3DS version is how there's a bloom-like white filter over everything. It makes it a littler harder to see on it's small screen compared to the WiiU version.

Can you cut anything off a Lagombi? Like say, the way you could mangle a Ludroth's mane?

EDIT: Also everyone check the in game manual (home menu) if you're having trouble with combos. Agreed that Long Sword (giant katana) is a great starter weapon, but also fun for those who know how to play. The only thing is, you can do alot of damage, but have to dodge everything.

I hated bloom ever since Tri introduced it to the series.

P3rd still had the purest graphics.

You can't cut off anything that's carvable. You can break his ears for added drops after the mission is complete.

Haven't tried it out, but it seems like Plesioth exhausts itself easily enough without the hammer. If you think you can reliably hit him in the head, then give it a shot.

Hunting Horn is an alternative to hammer. You collect three notes from doing different attacks, then press R to buff your party.

I have no idea what I am doing. I can't kill either of the bosses... I just hit them a bunch and then run out of time...

Try to go with the long sword. Use a combo of X and A attacks and once your meter maxes, go Raiden on it with your R1 attacks. Do a full set of that to increase your sword's power, and then combo again to raise the meter, rinse and repeat until it resets.

is the demo timed or is there a time limit for fighting bosses?

Bosses. Each quest has a time or item collect limit.

So how does switching between A and X work? Is there a certain order?

And which is for what?

X is normal attack and A is like a jab?

Does it have more potential than the regular Lance?

Well yeah, I was simply responding to the previous post which said they didn't notice anything break in the demo.

I don't know if anything broke, but I got him to drop a Beast Tear.

i'm really enjoying the longsword!

might be my favorite so far.

Same here, I really like the mobility of it... It feels similar to the way I play the Souls games.

I tried the Lance too, which wasn't bad but I feel like that would be better suited for playing in a party than solo.

Does it have more potential than the regular Lance?
Probably. They also nerfed lance damage output somewhat.

On the other hand, lance can probably still be used at about 70-80% effectiveness while half asleep if you're using a set with guard+2 and guard up. Gunlance has more attacks that leave you open, so you'll probably get punished more if you're playing that weapon half asleep.

This is such a predictable comment lol. The game will feel natural as you continue to play, and especially when you find a weapon you like. Also this game doesn't need life bars.
I get it with the life bar thing. That makes sense. I at least wish the controls were as competent as a Souls game for example. That combines strategy with working controls. This just feels clunky.

Rock on. I will dig in more now to get the hang of it.

X is good for hitting things above you, like when you're under a monster's tail. A is good for stabbing. X+A is good for moving out of the way. Some monsters which you can't be doing full combos on all the time, you just hit them with X, X+A and repeat, so you keep moving out of the way.

Believe me, you'll get used to it. When I first played the MH3 demo a few years ago I hated the lance because it was so clunky and thought I'd never use it. But now I main it and can't imagine using anything but some sort of lance, whether that's the regular lance or the gunlance if I get the hang of it.

Hmm...

Guard +2 is nice but don't think Guard Up is necessary. I prefer having Guard +2 and Sharpness +1 at least.

I just tried the demo, and is it normal that it took me so long to kill the "easy" beast? I was using the two blade set. I mainly attacked its back and tried to aim for the head while the beast was lying down/KO'd. I must have spend something like 10 minute spamming this beast. I guess it must be faster with coop player instead of small monkeys, but these were a nice improvement from the PSP games, at least they attract some attention from the beast, I think I begin to understand why this game is such a successful coop game in Japan. But I really don't like the rigid controls. I wish they used the touchscreen of the gamepad to quickly access items, it's a mess with the L+A/Y combo.

To add to this, you can control which way you fade slash by holding left or right on the analog stick while you press X+A. If you don't hold either, you'll simply move backwards with your fade slash.
