Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Wii U version is much better, but I did grow an unexpected sweet spot for the 3DS version. They did a really good job working around the issues of the platform.

I'd kind of like to have both, and do that bundle from Amazon (save 20 if you do buy both) but it really makes no sense and I dont have money to burn. Hell, I'm cheap enough to whine that Capcom isn't doing a discount for the Wii U game considering it's origins. I want it to be 39.99!

My first time trying out the Switch Axe and wow.

I think this is the one.

Beat Plesioth for the first time inside 15 minutes. I'll try out the ranged weapons but I think this is how I'm going to start the full game. I am much better at dodging than blocking and I like the feel and heft of the large weapons. A perfect combination.

I used the Sword Discharge on Lagombi and did some weird multihit attack which I think drained the energy bar. When I tried to do the same on Plesioth, it just did a single hit. Is this a special attack that needs to land fully on the enemy or was there a button combo I was supposed to follow the initial hit with?

I think I'll get it for Wii U since the community might not be very big and it might not last as long on fresh hardware. Then down the line I'll get a 3DS copy to revisit it. I just don't want to take that 80-90 dollar punch out of the gate, I'm gettin' real cheap when it comes to games.

I wish there was a cross play thing with Wii U and 3DS, that would be neat, this would probably like the one time I care about it though, so maybe not. :lol Might be doubtful even if it existed as a concept with Nintendo considering Capcom probably omitted the off-screen play in order to make people pay for both!

doing the multi-hit attack, tap X after you activate it to get more hits and finish off with a big hit at the end. Once your little bar gets below half it will reload the gauge

My hands can't get used to the 3DS controls. Don't have the Circle Pad Pro but might consider grabbing one in March if it helps.

I've done the Lagombi fight enough in MHP3rd so I know how to beat it, but wrestling with the 3DS controls and screen size at the same time is tough. :(

Dang, I really suck at this game.
Took me 2 tries (one failed attempt with Gunlance and then another with the big sword thing whatever) and 15 minutes into the 2nd trial, along with all of my items to take down the easy mode boss...

I don't get the Gunlance though, I got the ammo from the chest, but couldn't load it or something.

Go long sword, its easy to get into, and does nice damage output (you cant block though).

They really should be selling the Wii U version for $39.99

Infuriating stuff

My main issue going in was the camera, but once I found out about the auto-focus button tap, it was all gravy, and actually sold me on a 3DS version too as my commuting companion (because I totally played the shit out of the demo on yesterday's commute and it was awesome).

Damn, I have a Basic Wii U. Guess I'll need to go with the disc version..

Or invest in a small, cheap external drive so you can go digital with more of your purchases in the future. We have an ol' USB 2.0 500gb drive ready to go, but haven't had the need yet. Even MonHan won't put us over the limit (with a Deluxe unit, mind you) with NSMBU, ZombiU and a few eShop titles currently on the system memory.

Oh god, I'd probably suggest SnS for new players. It's fast and safe. And less likely to knock teammates over repeatedly with careless spamming. =\

I want to like the 3DS version more, but the ugly font scaling/shit resolution, lack of online, and no real right analog bother me. The new auto-target is nice, but underwater combat still feels a lot clunkier than it does in Tri and the Wii U demo.

I hope I'll get used to whatever I need to for the 3DS version because I'm also leaning toward getting that one first.

Hey with the dual blades I do fine but any other weapon I cant seem to do enough damage to defeat the monster on easy mode.

What am I doing wrong?

Give us a couple of the specific weapons you're using. It's tough to give tips for 'any other weapon' without knowing the specific weapons you want to master.

Any sort of gunner weapon will probably be tough without a lot of practice. Things like Hammer, Switch Axe, Great Sword, Long Sword, should all do a ton of damage, provided you're hitting him quite often. Dual Swords is a really easy weapon to jump in with though, given how much damage it deals with the pretty easy button mashy combos it provides.

If you really want to see the other weapons used effectively, check out Youtube. There are dozens of good tutorial for all the weapons.

Some weapons (bow, lol) deal optimal damage in ways aside from facerolling on X and A. If you waste time by getting hit, missing your attacks, or not taking advantage of openings that you should, you won't be able to clear it in time. There's a reason why the quest timer is 50 minutes in the full version.

Also, gunlance-flowchart.jpg ought to be required posting anytime somebody complains about there only being two attacks:

I can speak to hammer, but not the other two. So for hammer you are going to want to rely on the Super Pound attack. Unsheath your hammer and hold R. You'll notice it will charge up multiple times. Wait til the last charge, then position yourself slightly off to the side but still infront of the monster and stand still and release R. That will let you super pound the front of the monster and hopefully you'll hit it's head. If you see any yellow streaks/sparks, that means you did head damage to it. Immediatly after you release R and your character is doing the down swing part of the smash, start pushing B and a direction to roll so you cancel out the downtime. You can also go straight from Sheathed to the charge animation by pressing A and X at the same time and then R. (try pressing all 3 at the same time as close as you can)

Then go back to holding R and charging up again. Keep doing that over and over. When the monster is tired or stunned, or fell over, run up to it, but just press X, X, X and then immediatly after the last X(after the golf swing animation), press R and X to cancel the downtime and start the combo over. Otherwise you'll have a long downtime and you'll be wasting precious free attack time.

So just do those 2 things to get the hang of the hammer for starters. If you find yourself trying to do the super pound but you end up swinging in circles with your hammer, that means you were still moving when you released your R hold. You need to be standing still to do the super pound. If you get caught in the swing, make sure you press X before it ends the animation for you and then press B to roll out of the animation otherwise you'll be planted for awhile.

Hammer is really dependant on charging and moving around while it charges up. Each tier as it charges (when it flashes) performs a different attack on release. And it's different if you're moving, or standing still when you release it. Hammer also has a pretty basic three hit combo if you just hit the primary attack button three times. You can also hit, hit and roll and maybe open up for another hit. Hammer can also stun the enemies if you pound their head enough. It's a great weapon for breaking body parts too (which yield certain drops / quest rewards in the real game). I love the weapon, but it takes a bit of learning. Since moving around charging your hammer takes stamina as well, it's best to have a Dash Juice on hand to stop all stamina depletion.

But yeah, check out those Youtube videos. They'll explain it much more clearly than I ever could.

Eh, don't rely on it too much outside of openings when you can land a hit on the head for a stun. When you're playing with other melee characters, just spamming the pound will send your teammates flying and if you miss with it / miss time it, it has a pretty high punish. Different styles though, I guess. I much prefer a quicker use of the hammer for strikes.

I finally killed Plesioth with the Switchaxe, I really hope that there isn't much underwater combat in the final game.

Two questions:

-I read here that the switchaxe is a bad weapon, will I be boned if I choose to main it?
-Are all the weapon types available at the beggining of the game?

Every weapon is viable. Every. Single. One. Don't let people who don't like it dissuade you from wanting to use it.

- Feel free to use any weapon you like playing with. Will you be able to kill every monster in the game with a switchaxe? Yes.
- From what i heard, yes!

I cleared every online quest with our group in Tri using Switch Axe and Hammer. It's totally viable. People that are really into the hardcore mechanics / speed killing are just looking at the DPS of a weapon, which will lead them to call some 'bad'. But really it shouldn't discourage you from using it if you really enjoy it.

Not sure about weapon types available in the beginning. Single player Tri didn't unlock the Switch Axe / Long Sword right away, but I believe they were available instantly online.

There are 5-7 monsters you fight in the water, one of them being exclusively fought in the water.

The switchaxe is an awesome weapon. Advice: try and use the sword mode as much as you can, you will deal more damage that way.

And yes, all weapons types will be available at the beginning, but they aren't as strong as the weapons on the demo, but they will be good enough for the level you will be at.

Switchaxe, or what I'd like to call it, Slashaxe as that's what it's called in Japan and it's a way cooler name, is for pros. No seriously. It's the most difficult weapon to use effectively.

Pro tip, when doing the first X lunge attack, if you press R you will instantly switch to sword mode with an attack and from there on do the X+A charge attack which you'll then be able to do max damage the more you press X during the charge.

Thanks for the answers, seems like I'll main it then :)

I killed the Plesioth mainly with the combo from axe into sword and charged attack of the sword mode, an attack I would have never even known existed if I didn't read the manual.

There are different philosophies/styles of course, or whatever word you want to use, but I go by the mantra that the head is for the hammer user. The other melee hunters should be at the tail. So if they get hit, it's their fault. If you have two hammer users, I've had plenty of synchronized super pounds that is just beautiful to witness. One two punch, not at the same time. For smaller monsters, ya, there will be a bit of teammates getting hit, but they'll be hitting you too, it's not just a hammer thing that can hit teammates.

If you don't dodge out of the pound at the right time, then ya there is a long downtime, but that's another skill thing you should be always doing as a hammer user, rolling out to cancel the downtime animations.

But super pound has the highest KO damage in the game as far as I remember, minus the last swing of the golf swing. But many will argue the SP is easier and faster to do than the golf swing so better to use for your more main attack.

Just went back and played the demo again on WiiU. Enjoyed it pretty well after I looked at some things thanks to this thread. However the gimped time in the demo can go suck one.whats funny though is I did kill the easy monster......barely.

Was messing him up pretty good but the time was getting to me. I think I had a minute left when ChaCha hit him and killed him.

I can see myself enjoying this though with friends online and actually having the time and tools for traps Etc

i have to nitpick here... its KO damage when you hit their head, stunning is from things like flash bombs...

edit: thanks ;)

If you feel like your 'messing him up pretty good' but he just won't die, make sure you are sharpening your weapon. I believe all the demo weapons have blue sharpness, so if you look up and see it's no longer blue, switch to your whetstone in your inventory and press Y to use. Make sure you're in a safe location as it's a long animation that you can't cancel out of.

I was wondering what the deal with the blue was.
I randomly decided to use a whetstone and the red potion (I think it's for power) near the end so I could kill him.

Man this game is hard. I think I own it on Wii but have never tried it out before. I've died like 5 times already.

Think i'm going to mess around with my Monster Hunter 3 on Wii.
Just so I can get through the tutorials now. bought it a good while back but never bothered to even play it.

I think that is a good idea. You will find out what to expect in the beginning for MH3U by playing MH3.

My fucking internet has been down for a day, so no demo for me yet.

This will be my first MH game ever, so I am sure I will suck. This is best played on the Wii U gamepad, correct?

It's crazy that ZL and ZR aren't even mapped on the gamepad.

On the Wii U Game Pad it's incredibly uncomfortable due to the shoulder buttons being used for important functions and not the triggers. Is it less uncomfortable using the CC pro or the Pro controller? Also, how does lock on work with them?

PSA: If you're playing on Wii U, using the Gamepad, CC Pro, or Wii U ProCon, ZR toggles monster look on/off.

Switch Axe is my weapon of choice, and it takes a bit of learning but it can be quite effective. The X attack is good for hitting a tail that's over your head, Forward + X attack has amazing range and is great underwater, A+X is good when you're under a monster, and if you have the time to do so, after performing the A+X attack you can mash A to do a figure-8 swing that hits repeatedly (be careful as each swing drains your stamina so you may find yourself unable to dodge when this ends.)

In addition you have your sword mode, which can be accessed in 3 ways: Hit R while your Axe is out to switch, hit R after a Forward+X attack to switch and slash in one fluid motion, or while your weapon is sheathed, hit R+A+X to unsheath and slash in sword mode.

Sword mode is much shorter in range but is capable of some fluid strikes and a powerful discharge (A+X, then mash X until the tip of your sword explodes. Use this when the monster is knocked over or otherwise motionless.) Note that one of its attacks (Rising Slash in sword mode) is only accessible by using your secondary special attack button since R morphs the weapon. This is Start on Wii U or the touchscreen button on 3DS (Kick while sheathed, yellow sparkles with your weapon out.)

Really just stick with it and see how each attack works and you'll eventually begin to fully grasp how versatile Switch Axe can be with experience. I find that it's a nice balance between the brute force of Greatsword and the elegance of Longsword.

Not sure if anyone else has said anything, but it's really annoying when the monster is in between the zones and you run to attack it and go to the next zone accidentally. Happened to me between zone 10 & 11 in the hard demo probably 5 times while fighting the under water monster :P

Yes, it is annoying, but unless the monster is drained of stamina and just sitting there, you can usually lure it back into the middle of the area.
