Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Switch Axe is my weapon of choice, and it takes a bit of learning but it can be quite effective. The X attack is good for hitting a tail that's over your head, Forward + X attack has amazing range and is great underwater, A+X is good when you're under a monster, and if you have the time to do so, after performing the A+X attack you can mash A to do a figure-8 swing that hits repeatedly (be careful as each swing drains your stamina so you may find yourself unable to dodge when this ends.)

In addition you have your sword mode, which can be accessed in 3 ways: Hit R while your Axe is out to switch, hit R after a Forward+X attack to switch and slash in one fluid motion, or while your weapon is sheathed, hit R+A+X to unsheath and slash in sword mode.

Sword mode is much shorter in range but is capable of some fluid strikes and a powerful discharge (A+X, then mash X until the tip of your sword explodes. Use this when the monster is knocked over or otherwise motionless.) Note that one of its attacks (Rising Slash in sword mode) is only accessible by using your secondary special attack button since R morphs the weapon. This is Start on Wii U or the touchscreen button on 3DS (Kick while sheathed, yellow sparkles with your weapon out.)

Really just stick with it and see how each attack works and you'll eventually begin to fully grasp how versatile Switch Axe can be with experience. I find that it's a nice balance between the brute force of Greatsword and the elegance of Longsword.

Thanks for the tips!

First time playing Monster Hunter and I'm really enjoying it. I beat Lagombi on my first try with a sword and shield, although I think I was close to out of time. The fights take forever!
I think I'll play through a bunch more using different weapons and maybe trying different weapons.

Definitely feel like I'm fighting the camera on occasion though, but it does look stunning on 3DS (animation especially). I think I'll buy it when it comes out in Europe.

Think i'm going to mess around with my Monster Hunter 3 on Wii.
Just so I can get through the tutorials now. bought it a good while back but never bothered to even play it.

I think that is a good idea. You will find out what to expect in the beginning for MH3U by playing MH3.

I think I've got G actually. Maybe I have Tri too though... I think I do.

I'm kinda surprised they didn't have a tutorial in this Wii U demo.

At this point I dont know if I should keep my WiiU controller pro. The gamepad works perfectly, and if I can use it with MH, I probably could use it with any action game.

I guess I could keep it for MP since not everyone likes wiimotes or the old pro.

Yeah, I pretty much bought Razor's Edge mainly to test out the GamePad (and it turned out totally fine), so I'm only looking to get the Pro if it were on sale super cheap or something. =\

Still pissed NSMBU doesn't support it.

Just beat Lagombi with the Switch Axe! The weapon was more fun to use than I expected. Needed some training to fully master it, though!

I dont know if its my tv but monster hunter wii U looks much better on Wii U than 3DS but its also darker and I dont like that at all. Every other game looks ok I dont know what gives.

posted this in the Luigi's Mansion thread but since MH3ultimate is part of the deal, decided to post it here too
For those interested looks like Fry's has a promo this week, $30 to preorder Luigi's mansion

Some levels have platforms you have to move by tilting the controller. The ProCon doesn't have gyro, but I honestly don't see why not.

I've been toying with whether or not to get a ProCon myself. I'd probably rarely use it, but it would be nice to have the option should I ever want to. Especially since it's got its own rechargeable batteries and doesn't need a Wiimote dangling off of it.

Just played the Wii U one. Found it really difficult to play with the gamepad and the item useage on it didn't really add much, especially as you have to go back into the screen each time. Will be using the pro pad for this one.

Still, Plesioth looked great. He's still a dick though.

You can customize the touch-screen in the full version.

I agree the pad screen in general doesn't add much in the Demo. I wish they had included the ability to customize the screen a bit in the Demo. That ability in the full game may be what gets me to use the Wii Pad over the Pro Controller (either of them).

You can customize the touch-screen in the full version.

Does anyone know of a video showing the customization in progress? Or have first hand experience with the Japanese version? It is one of the only things I haven't seen in action and is one of the things I am most interested in.

Ahh, that's quite good. And you can use ZR/ZL too i understand? Cos that was irritating as well. I still think i might prefer just to do it all on the main screen with a pro pad. It's not the sort of game that lends itself to looking away for long.

Oh, yeah! I forgot about that lol

Can someone please confirm this? It's basically my main gripe with the Wii U demo right now. I want to use ZL and ZR instead of L and R.

"Change the camera angle via the ZL/ZR buttons!
It will be possible to change the camera angle using the Wii U GamePad's ZL and ZR buttons. This update is to match the control feeling of the Nintendo 3DS/LL Expansion Slide Pad."

Yes

Full game will have ZL/ZR customization, yeah, don't worry :)

And you can pause when playing offline yes. Press start to open the menu and then go to the second tab, it should be there.

EDIT: Beaten.

Alright, never played a Monster Hunter game before but I managed to murder that snow rabbit with the Sword and Shield pretty easily on my first try. He sure took a lot of hits though.

I didn't fare as well with the Bow against the sea monster. It'd help if the underwater combat wasn't so awkward, or if game told me how to use my special arrows...

edit: wait, the demo has a manual? hahaha

yeah it's useful for local MP. and with GC controllers gone it's obviously gonna be the go to for smash 4

Just played with gun lance a bit. Felt completely different from lance, which I suppose is a good thing, just kept missing because the attacks have more movement than I expected. Definitely see myself spending a lot of time with it though, it just seems so cool.

Played through the first quest, mostly to check out the technical elements, as I know what I'm getting into with MonHun. I thought the Wii U version was good! Good framerate, decent IQ, and It definitely plays like MonHun. My only issue is the size of the map. It's impossible to see anything on the minimap, because it's so damn small. The UI seems really really small. I had a hard time telling which dot was me, and which was the monster I was hunting.

You can zoom in to the area you're at...forget the shortcut but I know it exists!

Man, I cannot believe how OP'd the Dual Blades are. Very quick attacks, two elements/statuses, easy combos... Plus, [Mega] Dash Juice makes Demon Mode even more insane.

I can see this taking over LS as the noob weapon of choice, lol.

On land I had no problem with the 3DS controls and never felt like my camera was out of place using the L button alone.

Underwater, I had trouble finding the virtual dpad when I needed it to point up or down. I liked the underwater sections in Tri but without another REAL stick I felt clumsy. Circle Pad Pro works on the real release right?

Aww man, I've been looking forward to playing as one since before I got Tri! Now I'll be called a noob. :(

DS aren't new, I think only Tri omitted them. LS will ALWAYS be the noob weapon of choice.

^I know. But they're new to me, having played only Tri. I can kill Lagombi faster with Dual Blades than with SnS, which was my main weapon in Tri.

No worries, I'll definitely be a noob. :) I'll be rocking the Dual Blades, along with Swax, SnS, and Hammer. Maybe Bow since it was fun in the demo.

*snip*

Is this what you talking about? I don't have a Wii U.

Pretty sure he wants to change the actions associated with L to ZL and R to ZR. As it stands, ZR toggles monster lock-on, but hopefully they'll let you swap the L/R and ZL/ZR actions. I have no idea if this is possible.

Tried almost all weapons, had a ton of fun with dual swords and the light bowgun. In Tri, I used the switch axe almost exclusively and never even looked into bowguns, but I really like the mobility those weapons give you. Though I can't even kill Lagombi in 20 minutes using the light bowgun. Not enough damage output. Also tried the heavy bowgun and gunlance for the first time. Pretty easy and powerful, but not my cup of tea. Both feel too slow and unwieldy. The bow is extremely interesting, but like with the light bowgun, I simply don't deal enough damage. Still, that's another weapon I'll definitely look into.

Don't think Dual Swords are OP, but they are fun to use. Lances, Hammers and Great Swords all offer better damage output than Dual Swords.

Maybe I think that since they're so easy to use. I feel like you can get away with mashing X, whereas most weapons have some kind of combo that minimizes overhead/downtime.

...Gonna do some research.

Dual Swords is fun to use. It completely is about attack and no defense. I don't think it would be noob since there is really no way to defend yourself with DS.

Have you used the Flaming S in the item box? It should be good for the light bowgun. For the bow, have you fully charged the shot?

^Cool, thank you.

What's the best strategy using bow? I feel like I was doing jack shit :(

I have no idea what the best strategy to the Bow is, but I first put Lagombi to sleep and put down both barrel bombs. That's massive damage right there. Then I pretty much spammed the Power and C.Range coatings until he died. I played around with Poison and Exhaust, too, although the latter is probably best with fellow hunters so that they can more easily land combos.

The Arc Shot is interesting. Hold X to fully charge and then press A. You fire a goddamn flurry of shit into the air and it pulverizes whatever is in front of you. I'm assuming it's powerful. :p

EDIT: I need this game noooow. Black Ops II and its lag comp makes me want to snap my disc.

I've been killing Lagombi with the bow in under 10 minutes using this strategy:
  1. Start off with Poison coating. Use it till it's poisoned.
  2. Use Exhaust coating. Use it up completely.
  3. It will soon start drooling, and once it does, start using Sleep coating.
  4. Once it sleeps, set a trap near by, and then lay bombs next to Lagombi. Let Cha-Cha and Kayamba place their bombs too. Detonate!
  5. Lure Lagombi to the trap. And use the Power coating and do arc shots (will explain what this is)
  6. Continue to use Power coating till it goes to a new area.
  7. Use Para coating and get it paralyzed.
  8. Use remaining Power coating. It should be dead by then, if not, use C Range coating (does anyone know what C Range coating does? I assume it's more effective at close range)

Arc shots are when you are a fair distance away from a monster and you hold X until it's fully charged and then press A.

Oh, they provide suitable ammunition? Guess I missed it. Will give it another spin. :)

And yes, fully charged when possible, arrow rain when it makes sense. Almost got him the last time I tried.

Yea, and it has a fire element, so it should be super effective against Lagombi.

As for the bow, try what I posted above.

Have tried both demos and very pleased with both of them. Think I'm going to double dip on this...not sure where I'm going to get the money from though, too many games I want to buy next month - Monster Hunter 3G Ultimate x 2, Lego City Undercover, Need 4 Speed Most Wanted and possibly Aliens Colonial Marines depending on reviews.

yes the CPP is supported in the actual release, just not in the demo for whatever reason

and I feel the same way regarding underwater combat. on land functions amazingly well without DA. the new camera snap feature is great

I was able to make underwater combat work well enough through a combination of camera snap, using my circle pad thumb to hit up on the real d-pad, and my face button thumb to hit down on the virtual d-pad.

still, DA is undoubtedly better.

[/list]

Just right now—as you were typing this—I put Lagombi to sleep. Right as I was getting my bombs out, fucking Cha-Cha attacks the motherfucker. I was angry. :(

I need to research a few things about the Bow. Does a fully charged shot do more status? Is each arrow of the fully charged shot equal in power to a standard arrow? Is it most efficient to fully charge every shot? Do you save Arc for sure-fire hits? Will I ever stop asking questions and just look them up myself?

EDIT: wsippel answered some of these, haha.

Are there customizable controls in the JP Wii U version? The ZL and ZR buttons not being used is a crime against ergonomics.

ZR toggles whether a quick tap of the L button centers the camera on the monster. It toggles only if the monster has spotted you, and it's also a touch spot on the GamePad.

I wonder...if you're streaming, would the capture device also pick up voice chat from your teammates? Could make for some funny moments in the heat of a hunt.

EDIT: Should we get a WiiU list going so parties could possibly be ready day 1?
