Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

so I just tried the 3DS demo, is there any way to map the camera controls to L+R? People might say Im weird, but I dont like using an analog stick for camera. I feel much more comfortable with L+R. Other than that, Im surprised at the visuals since they looked pretty good especially in 3D. Would be nice if I have a friend to play the game with though.

I have to agree with the idea that the demo should be online, and I don't even like online. A demo that showed off the slower side of the game or tried to introduce players to the basics would probably be too slow. An experienced player can show it off to the newbies - and they'd probably be obsessively playing the demo anyway!

This demo's doing a great job of letting us experiment with different weapons, though. Now I wish you could set your equipment sets to shuffle.

Lagombi's much more fun and challenging than Plesioth in my opinion. I've been screwing up my GS charge timing (does it take longer now?), but I've still managed to kill him in just a little over ten minutes without using the supply box. Less with dual swords, but it's not quite as fun. You can hit him with multiple charge attacks right from the start; he drops a wyvern tear in seconds.

Plesioth takes me much longer, but whenever he stops or falls over or fires his easily-dodged beam he's just begging for a charge attack. Or two. Or three. It's much easier to hit him than Lagombi.

Man, this was my first ever Monster Hunter experience, and the controls felt so weird, I dont know if I want this game any more :'(

Maybe I should upgrade to an XL finally?

First timer here too. I had fun with it. I liked how it punishes the player if you just want to rush in and hit as many times as you can, it rewards observation, timing and strategy. I liked this more than I thought I would.

A question though, is this only about boss fights? I'm asking because I'm wondering how well this kind of gameplay works on a portable console: is it ok to play for 2-3mins, close the system then come back? would I be getting back to the same boss battle I was in? Could I grind a bit on portable, then take my save online for big fights?

I've been killing Lagombi with the bow in under 10 minutes using this strategy:
  1. Start off with Poison coating. Use it till it's poisoned.
  2. Use Exhaust coating. Use it up completely.
  3. It will soon start drooling, and once it does, start using Sleep coating.
  4. Once it sleeps, set a trap near by, and then lay bombs next to Lagombi. Let Cha-Cha and Kayamba place their bombs too. Detonate!
  5. Lure Lagombi to the trap. And use the Power coating and do arc shots (will explain what this is)
  6. Continue to use Power coating till it goes to a new area.
  7. Use Para coating and get it paralyzed.
  8. Use remaining Power coating. It should be dead by then, if not, use C Range coating (does anyone know what C Range coating does? I assume it's more effective at close range)

Arc shots are when you are a fair distance away from a monster and you hold X until it's fully charged and then press A.

Whoa. I'll try this, but this really puts me out of my comfort zone of how I usually play (never a fan of traps and bombs in any games that have 'em). Might need a few try!

Beat Lagombi with dual swords, long sword, great sword, and sword and shield. Tried with the lance but didn't seem to get the hang of it so I stopped.

Feck Plesioth.

There are many different kinds of quests.

-collect x items quests
-carry x items to base without getting hit quests (usually while avoiding a boss monster)
-kill x number of small monsters
-kill/capture single boss-monster
-kill HUGE boss-monster (Jhen Moran/Alatreon)
-kill/capture two or more boss monster

And probably a few more I forgot.

Also, if you are playing single player you can suspend your play session at anytime by closing your 3DS and return later without it counting against the timer.

Ah ok, that makes it much better.

I just saw the video posted. It looks even more fun when the player uses items, mines, etc. I only played once so I had no idea about that, but now that I see it I realize I can't wait for this to be out.

You forgot:

-experience a one way trip to hell with two hungry Deviljhos in the Arena.

Can't wait for that fight.

I'm kind of scared of trying the Plesioth fight. He was already such a pain before he learned how to dive, haha.

I never made it past 4* online in Tri. Can't wait to finally go toe-to-toe with Jho.
I don't even think I got that far. This is the main reason that I'm hyped. My internet situation wasn't great when the game came out so I spent the majority of my time in SP. I'm glad I'll be able to enjoy the MP right away this time.

Is there any chance Capcom will put this game on eshop and priced appropriately?
I'm dreaming, right? :(

I just want this game always available on the system, without paying the ludicrous price. :(

Tried the Plesioth about half a dozen times on the Wii U. Never touching that demo again. That fight, as a newbie, feels very unfair. So many hit stuns, Plesioth spamming the same attack over and over keeping you at a distance while the timer runs out, shitty swimming controls, etc. I'm certainly going to grab the full release when it comes out because I had a lot of fun with the other fight. It just feels like they don't give you the tools or time to beat Plesioth. One mistake and you're out 1/2 your health. That's not fun. I'm sure with more experience and my own equipment it'll be fine, but feels awful in the demo.

There Wii-U controller having a screen made it extra frustrating. So many times I would have chucked the controller at the couch across the room in that fight. Can't do that with the Wii-U for fear of breaking it. That just makes it more frustrating. haha.

I've been playing both the Wii U and the 3DS version of the games. I think I prefer the Wii U version more just because I can't seem to get a good hang of the screen prompts. Either way though, it's all good old MH for me.

I've been playing with bows and dual swords. I think I'm more accustomed to bows simply because it's slower paced, which gives me time to react instead of trying to be too aggressive and getting my ass kicked while waiting for the animation to finish.

I think I stopped at around High Rank Rathalos back in MH3, so I'm looking forward to getting higher and seeing the new monsters.

He is the hard monster

I am a tri veteran and havent beaten plesioth, I think I might be able with the heavy bowgun as gettin close to him in water is wasting time.

He is the hard monster

I realize he's the hard demo monster. He just feels unfairly hard as a newbie. Is he one of the harder monsters in the full game? I didn't think that was the case. Like I said, as a newbie, I just felt like they didn't give me the tools to beat him. It's frustrating because I want to play more, but I can take out the other boss with my eyes closed at this point.

What are all the Dual Blades combos you I should know about. I got my infinite combo down. Spam X until you stop, press A, repeat.

I also tried the Bow and Guns today. They're not bad. They're probably not something I'd play with, but I see how they could be useful with all the status effects, especially in groups.

I really like the Pro controller with this. I played Tri with the CCP, but I like the Pro better. Having the left stick over the d-pad makes all the difference. I still like the CCP better for Virtual Console, though. I've also been playing a lot of F-Zero and I like it better with the CCP. The GamePad is OK, but not as comfortable as the Pro. I think when I can put the look and run buttons on ZL and ZR, it'll be much better.

The worst point of this demo is that the game actually has a learning curve that gradually makes you comfortable with learning monster patterns and maximizing your own abilities, but none of that is present in this demo.

I like this game! I figured out how to do the special move/combo (holding R and charging up)
Pretty fantastic. Hammer's are so powerful.

I'll try and do some traps and other suggestions I just read in this thread.

This is my first MH game btw. I never got around to play MH3 on the Wii, but I already pre-ordered MH3U

why would you fight the hard monster as a newbie?

That's what I was saying. I'm not criticizing the game itself. I'm on board. I just felt like Plesioth was a bad fight to throw at you in the demo. No character customization+no tutorial+learning how to contend with swimming just make it an awful experience and can really put off new players.

why would you fight the hard monster as a newbie?

Because I can easily beat the other monster and want to try the next step up. It seems reasonable that the other monster shouldn't be ungodly hard for someone who's been able to take out the first one with ease.

Really liking the gun lance. I forget, how much time do you have for quest in the real game? 50 minutes real time? I know it's longer then 20 minutes and that's what is really throwing me off here. Not even going to attempt the hard fight because I know I simply won't have enough time. I'm beating the easy one within the remaining five minutes.

Played more of the 3DS version. Better with the controls but still taking a pass. Personally I need an XL as the screen is to small for this type of game. Really sure of that now. Makes me wish even more you could play the game on the Wii U gamepad. Oh well. Going to be interesting going back and forth between this and Lego City Undercover come March. Two games couldn't be any more different.

I can see why they would put Plesioth in the demo. You know there are people who crave hard games. There's people who might have checked out the demo because they heard MH was hard. That's in there for them. They're not going to be challenged by Lagombi.

I haven't tried out the Plesioth fight yet, but all this talk about it reminds me somewhat of the old MH Tri demo. My first time trying out Monster Hunter, and the Great Jaggi was easy enough, but more often than not I'd time out on the Qurupeco fight because taking hits and healing from them wound up being quite time-consuming, plus Quru was a monster who seemed to enjoy running a lot, which also took up time.

Of course, having played through the actual game, Quru feels like a total cakewalk now and I imagine that things will eventually be the same with Plessy. I understand the reasoning shortening the time limit of a demo, but it doesn't seem like they scaled the demo monsters' health to match at all. When you normally have 50 minutes to take down a monster, suddenly asking you do do that in your first few attempts in less than half the time does feel kind of unfair. But hey! That's why it's just a demo. :)

I keep wanting to give extra chances to the weapon types that weren't in Tri. I have the general gist of the gunlance and bow but I still feel like I'm missing something as to how to use either of them effectively. On the other hand, I expected going in to be intrigued and enjoy the hunting horn, and I do. Now the other question is what my secondary weapon should be, and if I'll perhaps dip my feet back into bowgunning like I did nearer the end of my Tri experience...

Plesioth GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

YOU FUCKINGGGG PIECE OF SHIT WHY WON'T YOU DIEEEEEEEEEE
OMGGGGGGGGGGG
RAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The gunlance was the first weapon I took against Logmbi. I got destroyed my first time, but on my second try got a feel for it and liked it. Really liked the tough block, having both melee and ranged and just the general feel for him. Once I got used to it, I beat him pretty easy on the second try. Going to be hard to pick between Long Sword, Dual Sword and Gunlance to be my main weapon for the full game.

If the Wiki'a correct, you fight Plesioth after beating Diablos and Barioth. Aside from struggling with water combat, those monsters are probably much more difficult. They're both very fast, very aggressive, and have hard to dodge attacks. But maybe my frame of reference is bad.

Two tips for avoiding Plesioth's attacks:

- Most of Plesioth's attacks aim forward. If you approach from the side, you're fairly safe.
- Monsters always do the tail whip twice (unless they're interrupted). Once he does one tail whip, he'll always follow with another.

I actually did figure out the first part. I still had trouble with my attacks carrying me out in front of him and getting my ass kicked. Still, this is why I'm quitting the demo. I can no longer really have funny beating on Logombi and I don't want the frustration of this Plesioth fight to taint my experience of the full game.

Thanks for the second tip, though. That's something I may have not caught and should be really helpful for the full game.

I think the gun lance can be effective depending on the type of ammo you have. Seems like it should be used in certain situations and not used normally. Doesn't replace the bowguns since the range of the gun seems to be short. Then again I didn't really use the bowguns so perhaps the range on them is the same but I would assume isn't.

Is there a time limit for quests in the full game? Do monsters become stronger when playing co-op?

Went and double checked. It is 50 minutes. I think that's for all quest from simple gathering quest to boss fights.

I also believe the monsters are stronger when you play online. More health for sure since you have 4 people at the max attacking but not sure if they do more damage though.

Was changing ammo on the gunlance in the demo, because I missed it if it was? I mostly used it for melee than used the ranged when the enemy started to take off or otherwise got away from me. I also had fun jamming some bullets into a dude in the middle of a melee combo.

It has barely been 3 months since the system launched. The current lineup is definitely anemic but it isn't like there is nothing. Monster Hunter and Lego City are next month. Injustice is in April. Game and Wario, Pikmin, and Wonderful 101 in the summer. Yoshi, Mario/Kart, Zelda, Bayonetta 2, Watch Dogs later this year.

You know this stuff is coming.

I don't own a Wii U yet but I will get one once these games actually start coming out.

Sure, those games will be great. That is why I bought a Wii U. I already own a PS3, 360, and cutting edge gaming PC, so I'm not worried about third party support. I bought it expecting a Mario Box, much in the same way I bought my original Xbox as a Halo Box.

That being said, you illustrate a point I'd like to make here: Why the hell did Nintendo launch the Wii U in November, instead of waiting until it had all the games you're talking about? It could have taken those extra months to fix all the half-baked stuff plaguing the system and its early adopters currently (slowest loading interface ever seen on a console, super awkward backwards compatibility, no VC, no Gamepad support for Wii VC).

Hackers have already got the Gamepad working for PC and are currently trying to get it the PC to stream games to it, and while I'm sure it won't be elegant it proves that people are very capable of tapping into the hardware's potential. I realize that's somewhat of an apples to crab apples comparison, but if an unpaid enthusiast can get the Gamepad up and running for PC titles, why the hell can't Nintendo enable emulation of Wiimotes and Classic Controllers? The Gamepad obviously wouldn't work well as a pointing device, but for most games that only require minimal waggling (NSMB, DKC:R, etc., etc.), the sensors in the Gamepad would do just fine. My hypothetical answer to my own question: Nintendo rushed the Wii U out for a holiday launch so it could get a head start on the PS4 and Xbox 720.

Maybe. I'd like to think that if you beat Lagombi, you're smart enough to know that easy is easy and hard means hard, though. There's also people who will turn the demo off as soon as they see how your character controls. They might not even get to the monster. You can't please everyone at once.

Don't think so. I'm just assuming it uses different ammo.

Edit:

Regarding the demo. I'm going to try just running around the area tomorrow, purposefully avoiding the boss to try out the different weapons, instead of just doing that at the camp. Curious if you can gather items from the random monsters around the areas.

You can zoom in to the area you're at...forget the shortcut but I know it exists!

That really doesn't help me, since I only needed to know the difference between me and the monster when we were in different zones.

But the hard that the second monster is is apparently not indicative of the full game experience. A person may go in expecting "hard" to be reasonably challenging compared to how easy the Logombi fight is and might decide the game is too hard if that's what it's building to.

A demo is for attracting new players first and foremost. If your demo's difficulty is even harder than what you're full game experience is, you're frustrating people unnecessarily.

It says right there on the selection screen Largomorph is "for Novice Hunters" and Plesioth is "for Veteran Hunters." You know, those people who've basically mastered other installments in the series and are asking themselves, "eh, why should I pick up this one?" Not for someone who just started the game 30 minutes ago and still doesn't know what most of the items do.

Great Sword and Lance are too frustrating for me. I constantly have to sheath my weapon whenever the monster gets more than two feet away or else I move like a slug. Bow and Rapid Bowgun are pretty nice, probably best in parties. Sword/Shield and Longsword are definitely my favorites so far.
