Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Character development

In the first few arcade versions of Mortal Kombat, there was a listing in the audit menu for "ERMACS". In Revision 3.0, it was actually listed directly underneath "Reptile Battles" giving the appearance that they were grouped together. It was believed to reference a character the same way "Reptile Battles" does which led people to believe that Ermac was also a secret character. The Ermac listing is a shortening of the term "Error Macro". This is referenced in a hidden reversed message in Mortal Kombat: Deception's Konquest mode which states "It is a little known fact that Ermac is short for Error Macro". Electronic Gaming Monthly published a photo to accompany a letter from Tony Casey reporting an alleged encounter.[1] However, Ermac did not appear in any version. There is also no naturally occurring default character palette that would provide a full palette swap for Ermac. Ed Boon later confirmed in a Tweet that the Error Macro was simply a macro created to catch coding errors/traps.[2]

The MK crew denied that he existed in Mortal Kombat II with one of the jumbled messages that appeared at the bottom of the screen after beating the game: CEAMR ODSE NTO EXITS (an anagram of "Ermac does not exist"), and the occasional appearance of the secret character Jade with the message "Ermac Who?" The numerous rumors of his existence led to his debut as an official character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. His storyline is even based on his own rumor as well and later changed to become a legit character in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Until Mortal Kombat: Deception, he was just another palette swapped ninja. Around the time of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, the creators made the choice to give all the ninjas their very own look and identity.

Rumors

Ermac was created by the MK Team because of fan mythology. It was said that by overplaying the Sega version of Mortal Kombat with Scorpion, the screen would eventually flaw and flash an alert message on the screen. The message read "Error Macro" and it would turn Scorpion's yellow outfit red. This was proven to be completely false. Despite repeated references that tried to inform the player that Ermac did not exist, they eventually decided to create him and include him in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

Something small, but it's also something I feel really dumb over since I have played Resident Evil 1 countless times over the years.

When Barry lowers you down the hole in the mansion with a rope and drops it, he runs off to get another leaving you down there, then you can go continue.

What I did not know is you can actually wait for about 20 seconds and he will return with a new rope, pull you back up and give you an access code and sound all grumpy. I never knew about it since I always went ahead. I believe this also triggers a new dialogue option in the underwater cave area too for when you meet Enrico.

I find it shocking because I have done everything possible in the game apart from that one thing and just found out about it. doh.

Chrono Trigger has a ton of hidden facts I'm currently putting together...

I.e. Gaspar really was considered as a playable character at one point.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but it was something that just only recently dawned on me:

In Metroid, the "Varia Suit" is actually a mistranslation of "Barrier Suit".

Which is fine by me, because "Varia" sounds more exotic

Probably not, I would say. The Japanese version of Super Metroid specifically says "Varia" in both the manual and the game. Although they could have made the change based on an earlier mistranslation, I suppose.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mistranslation. I mean "Suitless" => "Zero Suit," sheesh.

Nope, バリアスーツ is literally "Barrier Suit". In romaji, it gets spun out as "Baria Sūtsu", and quite often B's and V's in Japanese can sound similar. This is further driven home by the fact that the manual for Metroid 2 actually translates it properly (the one and only time).

Well what do you know, it does. But it also mentions the Varia as the pick up. So it's a bit of both.

The Japanese version of RE4 had the Ashley sections playable with the "classic" Resident Evil camera.

Holy crap, never seen anything like this :| I just found a frickin creeper! How big is this thing?
It's either (the scaled equivalent of) 2 miles wide or 4 miles depending on whether the two characters on the far left started from the center or from the far right side.

As for height, well it's probably about the same.

I just wish I could download it as a single image (It's broken up into parts like Google Maps) so I could look at the whole thing and see if I missed anything. Shame there's no download link.

Does something like this not work for you? I've seen a few similar sites that have the whole thing zoomable with google maps-like controls. I remember there being another one I like better but I can't seem to find it with the (admittedly limited) search I just did.

The large panel on the page can be clicked and dragged.
If you follow the ground to the right long enough, you'll come to a part that looks like the first stage of Super Mario Bros. Then you can pan down and see how deep those pits are.

I wonder if it's possible to see the whole world. I got tired of dragging (got to the bottom and then all the way to the left).

I must say, it's pretty damn cool and I want to see it all.

The Warring Triad in FFVI actually had different names during development:

- Demon/Poltrgeist was Zurvan.
- Goddess was Sophia.
- Fiend/Doom was Sephiroth.

In this concept art by Tetsuya Nomura, the katakana is the same as the one used for the character of the same name in FFVII, but the romanization is Engrish-y ("Sefilos").

The name Sophia was later used in Xenogears, although this may or may not be a coincidence (Tetsuya Takahashi was a graphic director on FFVI). Zurvan was used in Chrono Cross also.

Oh WooW... my mind is blowing...

okay, I'll be the stupid bloke here. What's the meaning of this?

That's awesome. So much easier to view it at a time. I guess I did miss a few small things in the air.

I haven't thought about this one for about 15 years, but in Super Mario World, if you hold up on the d-pad after beating Bowser, Mario looks like he's clapping when he walks through the ending credits.

I can't find any evidence on Youtube I'm afraid, but I remember it from my SNES days!

Christ knows how we discovered it.

While not clapping, this video shows what happens if you hold Up and LR + XY.

So essentially any "Do You Know Gaming" post is stupid and irrelevant.

I've always been a little suspicious of the site, considering they source none of their information. Seeing whatever interview or video that info comes out of would have been cool.

That is the most incredible thing I've seen all day.
